In certain areas of this country, they employ what is called a swamp cooler to control temps inside the house. Water effectively strips heat from the surrounding air as it evaporates. I have been in several houses that use this type of A/C and can attest to their effectiveness.

However, like you said, humidity does add to the "Heat Index" or how hot it actually feels. This reference of heat does not effect plants in the same way it does mammals that perspire. Please indulge me for a moment whilst I explain.

In humid areas of the world, it feels hotter to us because of the copious amounts of sweat that is present and does not evaporate quickly because of the humidity. We are accustomed to being dry and comfortable, and as such, when soaked with sweat, we get very uncomfortable, and suddenly notice that it is hot because the sweat is not evaporating and cooling the body as fast as it does in drier climes.

I have lived in places that have a very low RH most of the year, and thus, the "Feels Like" temperature is lower than the actual temperature because of the heat index. Imagine this: 115F at 5% RH. Your sweat evaporates very quickly and you don't notice the heat as much as if the RH was at say 40%. This is actually a very dangerous heat that can cause death if not heeded. When you sweat it evaporates and cools the body, so you don't notice how hot it really is, so you stay out longer, and can dehydrate very quickly because of the water loss through the sweat... bad juju...

All that said, a swamp cooler, or evaporative air conditioner can actually lower the air temperature considerably, just as evaporating sweat can lower the body's temperature. Granted is is not as effective as refrigerant, but I have been in houses with swamp coolers that are as much as 30 degrees cooler than the outside. Yes, it is more humid inside, but with the cooled air moving by the fan, it is much more comfortable than the same humidity at 30 degrees higher outside.

In this instance, the fan would be blowing air that has been cooled by the evaporating water from the towel over the plants. If RH in the area is low, the danger of fungus is low as well. HOWEVER, if the RH in the area is above 40%, a swamp cooler would NOT BE RECOMMENDED for use in this situation. For one, it would not be as effective as in drier climate, and two, it will raise the RH around the plants to well over 60%. Warm, moist air is a haven for airborne fungus, and will cause bud rot in the flowering stage.
Thanks that is what I was wondering...If the plants would be effected by the humidity like we are...

Hey bigirishdoode

I'm just after reading through the past 13 pages, delighted to have found this grow :)

The videos are a really nice change to see in a journal I loved watching them, your grow is very interesting.

Hope you don't mind if I stick around for this, I'm subbed, +REP :)

My journal is in my signature if you are interested.

Keep up the good work.

question im a worm farmer i build my own castings, but i also started a small indoor compost bin, but started thinking where do the digesting mycos come from, just off of the organic matter? or should i inoculate with something? would the mykos i use in my teas be a good source? does anyone else do this or have knowledge on how to get this thing kicking it seems like its just sitting there rotting all wrong lol

Hey BID...there's a lot here...let me see, indoor composting... Most indoor composting I've seen uses fermentation, If that's what you are after, search Bokashi...I don't know a whole lot about it.

I'm not sure regular composting will work indoors, you'll need to have appropriate ratios of carbon to nitrogen, or "green" to "brown" waste and it needs to be kept moist (not wet) and turned over every so often. The microbes usually find their way into the compost pile on their own, but you can wet it with a compost tea and some fish fertilizer to kick up the microbial activity. But this method of composting will take many weeks of cooking to break everything down, and there will be odors as the pile decays...you can actually see an active compost pile steaming on a cool day as you are turning it over when all is well.

I don't think mycorrhiza are all that important in composting, the term literally means fungus-roots...they live in the soil and colonize the roots to help with nutrient uptake after all the composting is done and the plants are planted. Myko innoculants are usually applied directly to the roots when you transplant.

I'm not sure if that helps any, or maybe I misunderstood the question!

im after some srp too any brands i should be looking for

Doc has been having great results with his Pro-Mix blend...some of the best yet. I think he is using the general purpose BX...if you are planning for high Brix and can get the same stuff, you'll be able to closely follow Doc's recommendations. :thumb:

For SRP, I use Espoma, but that's just because it's the easiest to pick up around me, as long as you don't get hard rock phosphate or one of the super phosphates, you'll be fine.

I'm not familiar with Soil Secrets, I'll check them out when I have a chance. As for the mites...I've never dealt with them, but I've been told once spider mites are in a room it's very difficult to fully eliminate them...they are so damn tiny they can safely hide almost anywhere! I've been looking in something like Best Yet or one of the other Cedarcide products with a fogger as a way to "sterilize" a room from unwanted pests...but I don't know that you'd want to use it around the plants...more of a between grow treatment. They market the products for use against bedbugs, which are very hard to eliminate. Supposedly the stuff is a death sentence for all arthropods.
