Visualize Whirrled Peas: A Perpetual Garden By 013

Heard a funky noise, the mutts started barking, it was a Bezos-Elf throttling a grey Sprinter sled whilst slinging a bevy of boxes on the porch. Some 3 gallon & 30 gallon grow bags, an ec meter, a wifi digital microscope and ticket to ride the MC bandwagon.

Temps are low since the oil filled heater bit the dust, but girls are cruising and we’ve got the korean sex swing back hanging in place hosting a 30 gallon grow bag. Since there is no plumbing drain in the room the swing is used to hold the plants above the drip tray below. Need to build another swing for the 2nd tray to hold another 30 gallon bag and get critters ordered from Bugs R Us to establish the predator colonies.

Will do - thank you sir. Yes this is phase one to get a bag started. This soil has been cooking for 6 months but I want to add 1 more center support to the frame before I finish filling up that bag. Then I will build a frame for the 2nd tray and get the 2nd bag setup. I’m starting to get busy with obligations so I’m have to work in fits. Got a line on some more rabbit poop which I want to secure.

But yes Nunya thanks to you and the reoccurring mites I’m ready to kick pests out of my equation. I’ve got another plant frame & bag to setup then it’s mulch, cover crop, critters and a lux meter at the top of my garden to do list. Funny story but about this time last year I locked in on you & doc here at 420 as growers I wanted to emulate.... trouble is he still gets pests and you don’t

Came home the other day and the grow room was cold, checked my oil filled heater and it was cold, still plugged in and the fans were running so I knew the circuit had juice. Here’s what I found....

See the burn marks apparently the oil filled heater had been arcing, I’m really happy this happened on concrete and not in a tent or this would be a totally different post.

What kind of mites?

If its Spider/Broad/Russet then Rove Beetles have little to no effect on them.
Rove Beetles will devour anything in the soil like Fungus gnats, aphids, etc have no chance.
Need to super clean your area, then keep your humidity 70-75% and temp 75-76⁰ in veg stage and probably a good idea to spray leaves about twice a week with Tweetmint and Silica.
The high humidity lower than 80⁰ temps combined with an enzyme cleaner to dissolve and dry them and silica to make the leaf surface more resistant to being punctured is a good defense against them.
Also try to get your Brix above 12 and everything will be less likely to want to eat your plant.
Most of my plants seem to just naturally hover around 11-13 Brix .

Jeebus, you're lucky as hell.

Nunya - I know - right, could have burned the place down. I’ve moved all the old soil and containers out of the grow room, bug bombed and cleaned. If it takes nematodes to protect the soil that’s fine by me but it’s my understanding nematodes can kill off the beneficials insects. I just want to get to pest free and running this LOS whatever that takes...but preferably without sprays

Nunya - I know - right? I don’t have mites at this time, but I’ve had them recently. I’ve moved all the old soil & containers out of the grow room, bug bombed and cleaned. I use zero sprays.
But I don't and never have had spider mites.
My only pest i had several years ago was Fungus gnats, the Rove Beetles and predator mites take care of any soil borne pest.
My Brix is always around 12 so that helps too.

Before I cleaned house I did see a few two spotted spider mites on the plant, but I also had tiny white mites in the soil, no idea on species.

As far as the LOS side goes I don’t care if it’s worms, rove beetles, predator mites or any another species to get me there. I’d love to hit some high brix numbers but for now I just need to get my grow on with no pest pressure. I would like to have to critters burrowing the soil and dropping frass, but I’m ok with nematodes if that’s the best way for me to go.

Here’s my deal, I’m outdoors all the time, lots of yard work plus I have dogs and doggie doors in the basement near the grow space. I was looking at stethorus punctillum, worms & rove beetles or just going with nematodes to start with but I‘m not sure which way to go. It seems an either or choice since nematodes and the insect crew don’t appear to play nice. The basement is a naturally cooler enviro but I can ramp the temps up winter, spring & fall to accommodate

I‘m way out of my element here so if my freaky set of circumstances adds up to something or tells you what I should avoid then I’m all ears. I’m leaning towards stethorus punctillum and nematodes but

When i need a little extra heat i hung up large CFL , rather than a heater with no lights add some lights for the heat and the extra benefit of lights , cfl are cheap and they do make a bit of a difference in the temps i ran two in winter , why pay to run a heater when you can run extra light cheaply , even a 150 to 250 watt MH would use less than the heater ,
get best of both worlds HEAT AND LIGHT :thumb:

Happy Easter K!

I hope your day is brimming with love, laughter and a good amount of chocolate.

My garden thanks you for your ongoing interest and advice.

Storm it’s funny, I thought this would be an easy enough hobby that would save $$$ in the long run but 3 or 4 grand later I’m having doubts. I started up without the benefit of 420 mag and went to a hydro store and got sold on net pots, bottle nutes and T-5’s. Killed my beans switched to soil, then a 315 cmh, next was a 600w hps finally got some Mars hydro lights

I guess the lesson here is to buy the right equipment on the first pass and the best media for your skill level without jumping all over the place like a certain dumbass I know.... now if I can get this soil tooled up with beneficial critters - maybe I can return to growing again.
