Venturi’s Northern Lights Auto DWC 2022 Remix

What do you guys think of rain water? I’ve been delving into it the past few days. How clean can it be? Well 0ppm isn’t necessarily clean is it? There is a possible uptick in likely hood of getting some root issues which is the main reason I don’t want to use it, having root problems already my last grow. I do have z7 and hydroguard but my city water isn’t the best, I got root issues pretty early in under 2 weeks before hydroguard and z7. I do have an online filter which I think takes out chlorine, but my city ppm is still near 200

what's your rainwater testing and how is it collected ? r
if it's runoff from a roof or structure it could have anything.

most rainwater is good. but depending where you live it can occasionally be awful.

I haven’t collected any to test but yeah it would be off a roof. I’d have to take a gander at how old it looks though.

I dropped tres in some water and she sank like a stone! No bubbles so I don’t imagine she was cracked or had a hole. I’ll know in a few days. The temps in the tent are at about 80f with the p2000 on 50%. I do have the exhaust quite low but I’m definitely going to have to insulate the buckets once they’re in there.

Seedlings update. They got some water after this pic. Tres was floating this morning! Damndest thing. If she sprouts I’m betting she’ll be the strongest just because how abnormal she is. I put the hygrometer on floor level and it’s saying 73. I think the thermometer in the lights throwing off higher numbers.
That’s all for now folks! Happy Humpday!

It’s a chilly one out there today! I’ve got some chili cooking, a fire going and I found another seed in my bag. Jealousy was the strain. In addition to the Gary Payton, and alien runtz.

Seedling update; uno and dos are doing ok. Tres hasn’t popped from cube yet but it’s early I just dropped her in today. I’ve had the humidifier going all day and it’s 50% right now. If I turn the exhaust fan off I think it may heat up too much.

Today is prep day, or plant day. Not sure which. The babies are doing well. Tres just sprouted this morning.
Unused hydroton is being rinsed, I’ll have to boil the used if I end up needing it.
Buckets are to be super washed, net pots are in the dishwasher (why the hell not haha).
New air stones are soaking for hours, new air pump, new hoses need to be set up
New light has been in and kicking butt!
It feels like a good day to me!

Well I figured out the why not lol. The paint on the tops of the net pots came off a bit. Now, clearly I was full aware there was paint on them. What I didn’t figure in, that without primer the oil base paint had not bonded well with the clean plastic surface. No harm no foul. The paint didn’t melt just came off into the dishwasher strainer. Picked it out. In case you wondered, most dishwashers have a filter in the bottom that twists. :) all for now.

Update time. Uno and Dos got put in buckets today with 5.8 ph. Z7 2.5ml hydroguard I followed the directions I believe 2ml per gallon. No nutes of course. One error I made was allowing the exhaust fan controller get wet. (Edit it’s dry and up and running)I’ve got it in a bag of rice to see if it will dry out, if not I may have to ask @Mars Hydro if I can buy a fan speed controller separate. I need to pick up another 6in netpot sometime next week for tres.

Onward through the fog!

I think I’ve found a good material for the lid but of course it’s not light proof. This is a rubber like material used for an insert in drawers or cabinets to set your dishes on. I suppose I’ll have to paint it….. or I have some insulation tape, kinda like this but I believe my tape is actual aluminum. Maybe I’ll just tape the bucket lids, the bucket and everything else like I saw someone do. I wish I knew the journal to find a pic it was glorious. What do you guys think

The tape would work fine.
Easier to deal with when working on the buckets.
Hope your having a good day my friend @Venturisix

Stay safe

I've been slowly taping my buckets up to help block light better.

Bought a 5 pack of black duct tape off the Zon for dirt cheap. It seems to be working good so far! Wish I had gone that route from the start

I think they’re taped enough lol. I may add a little something but I don’t think the rock wool will grow much with a little light being an inert material and all. I don’t want to scrunch them in just yet. I’ve got the light on 60% right now at 30inches 20/4 schedule. I’m going to drop it down gradually a little once they get a little higher than knee high to a grasshopper. I’ll likely keep the 20/4 schedule the entire lifespan since they’re autos. Really interested to see how quick these grow compared to the bag seeds. They seemed pretty rugged and apart from root issues there was never a toxicity or deficiency.
Now with good genetics and near a 3 ft height cap it should get interesting. I’m going to have to do some more research on autos and what most do to corral and encourage growth. I do believe I read the consensus is against topping and Hst. I’ve got some gardening line for tie downs but I don’t know how much Lst I plan to do. I think one will be more experimental and go through more stress but with a determined lifespan I don’t want to stress them much at all. I’m not worried about height and I plan to let them get as tall or short as they’d like. I’ll do some picking and pruning likely in the veg phase but going to stick to the status quo of F+21 lollipoping and defoil.

I'd give this a read for the topping, Multivortex nailed it with the best explanation I've come across to date.

Regarding the height control, bend them constantly, and don't let one cola become dominant (it will help spread the plant out and keep it low). A net can go a long ways in creating many spots to weave and tie them down to (and increase yields).

Short update today. Numbers are looking good. Not much change to ph as expected with only z7 and hydroguard. I’ve been reading through others old journals specifically northern lights dwc. Still thinking I’m going to use tie downs to lst and no scrog. I had thought quite a bit on using a small tomato metal cage thing to spread out branches eventually. Instillation would be simple just 4 holes in the net pot lid. Trying to plan for the future, as I prefer to take the net pot entirely out in order to test ph and such. Once the water level (which is now sitting at the bottom of the net pot) recedes once the roots drop; dropping the level to an inch to 2 inch under the basket makes it hard for me to dip in the tds or ph tester.
If I go scrog I won’t be able to take the buckets out weekly to clean them either. Given the root issues I had last time I’d like to clean them weekly. I’ve got h202 ready this time among the good bacteria. No plans on topping either.. maybe one, maybe…

Steady as she goes ladies and gents.

Short Friday morning update. Dos had some water spots on her. “This is not my worried face” I know exactly what’s going on. The rh isn’t necessarily too high, but the humidifier is too close and pointing toward the fan where it blows directly on 2. So I moved the angle of the humidifier away from tent entrance and toward the back. I’m trying to figure out how to quiet down this main pump it’s a bit loud. I’ve got a foot stool that is hollow I’m thinking of using. I tried placing the pump in there and left the top eschew and it cut the sound down a lot! Like I could run it full steam ahead and it’s hardly noticeable. Going to play with that idea this weekend. The one concern is the pump heating up the air in there before pumping into buckets. May make some air holes near the bottom to suck in cool air. What do you guys thing? Doable or a possible fire hazard/ heater of buckets?

I was worried I wasn’t too feeding enough due to their size but then I remember they’re planted down some half inch so they’re twice as tall as they put on. Tomorrow marks day 7.
