Hello smoker.........I'm a virgin when it comes to growing but not smoking......I had a couple of questions for you. I have been tooling around the net for a couple of months and found this site to be the most helpful......so I signed up. I have been following ur current grow however have yet to check out ur first journal. I must say nice ladies. I to feel like me and my fiancé spend way to much money on our habit, so here we are to try our greenthumb out........anyway questions.......
1. My space is 3.5x2.5x9ft tall. In the basement so have steady temps at 62 through the winter down there with around 53% RH. Using he 62 Degree air how big of hps light do u feel I could cool in that space. I'm thinking 600. I plan on getting a solis tek switchable 1000w ballast that can be dimmed to 400 and 600w. So at worst the 400 I hope. That's why opinions r appreciated.
2. I got bags seeds to start off with. Bubblegum, white widow, chocolope, death star(although I read that they r only cloned, and some girlscout cookie. Year of collecting. How many ought I germinate at a time and what is ideal number in that space, with the fact that the first time I prolly won't mess with lst or scog.
3 next is about passive intake. With a carbon filter and inline fan, appropriate for room size, how many cubic feet of intake do I need. The room is about 80 cubic feet.
Advise from anyone is appreciated. Oh yeah the grow will be soil. And I will have a blockbuster 6in air cooled reflector.......and one more thing sorry I have also been thinking of led with solves question number 1. Anyhow what r ur thoughts on brands......kind or blackdog?
Thanks again....go colts.
Great questions and a really catchy username I like it.
The space is relatively small which is more ideal for shorter single stemmed plants. Meaning if you want more colas you are gonna have to put your plants into flower sooner this way side branches dont have the time to develop and waste that valuable space. A single stalk plant will develop a large cola but no to little branches(prune off any new ones so they dont sap energy and form tiny popcorn buds which are of little value to you instead by cutting off the new lower branches that energy will be reinvested into giving you a larger cola which will utilize all the light it can as being the more dominant top closer to the light this will be where your potency comes from. With a area that small you shouldnt need to vent in cold air if the ambient temp is as you say. A 600 watt hps wont need any cooling but do have fans for circulation. You can use whatever you wish of course but I wouldnt unless with the light on you see the temps regularly going over 85 which is my cut off point for the high point of temps unless you use co2 as supplementation then your temps can afford to be higher the plants actually enjoy the higher temps when extra co2 is involved. Our atmosphere only has 350 ppm co2 and the environment can be supplemented as high as 1500 ppm but it isnt needed to yield a potent crop. I have a lot of ideas to utilize all that vertical space but we can get into that a bit later depending on how diy inclined you are. If you are not diy inclined but still want to use all that space I would advise you to look into a coliseum grow. It will fit your dimensions and can hold up to 100 single stemmed plants about a gram to a 1/8th per plant. You can expect up to 5 pounds per grow using this method. The lights are in the middle of the coliseum aligned vertically but no light is wasted as there are no hoods and the coliseum spins in a circle ensuring every bit of plant is exposed to the lights the nutrients and water come in from the top. This system is very stealthy but it may be to expensive and 5 pounds may be impractical for your needs. You could do a rotation garden where you half the space with something like a shelf and use blackout curtains so the light from one space doesnt interfere with the other. This will allow 2 or 3 plants to flower while 2-3 plants are vegging in the same space without interfering with each other. I wrote about these methods in my first journal.
Dont forget that when you germinate and grow your plants some may die some may be male and so you want to sow roughly 50% more seeds then plants you intend to have.
As for the cubic feet of intake I apologize but I cant answer that as I dont use intake. It isnt practical for my situation and so dont feel qualified to answer this without the appropriate experience on the subject at hand. I do know any bends in your tubing reduce the air flow by 10%. You will want a charcoal or carbon filter. You also want to stretch pantyhose over the end that pipes in the cold air this will prevent bugs from traversing into the grow through the ducting.
I use g8led. I can testify to their quality and the increased growth I get out of them. The plants stay shorter and bushier and the colas are a lot bigger and thicker vs the hps which works well but seems to create light fluffy nugs with more popcorn nugs(immature scrap essentially but it can be used for baking pretty well it contains 1/4th to 1/2 the thc of mature nuggets.) The brand you choose usually comes down to which diodes you want to use the wattage and the wattage of the diodes. Cheaper lights usually wont have any infared or ultraviolet. Red light is the cheapest to produce and so most leds will contain more red then blue. Nasa has shown a Green led in the middle is beneficial but I cant testify to this personally. I think black dog, california lightworks, diamond are to expensive but again I cant give anything concrete due to no personal experience with these light companies. Check out the

So to long didnt read version
1.Grow single more single stemmed plants or fewer plants if you want branching
2.Your ambient temps are low enough that bringing in cold air and expelling hot air may not be needed.

Dont worry the colts are in a weak division so even if they have down years(not this year) they will still likely get to the playoffs. Andrew luck is a amazing qb and will only get better with time so in other words the colts LUCKED out in regards to trading manning. nyuk nyuk. Thanks for reading and I am honored for you to come to my journal to ask your questions. I am always here for people like you and if you want once you make a journal and get set up I would like to come subscribe and offer more specific advice to your conditions. Take care
