Slimm's Urban Hang Suite

:popcorn:Hey Slim, I also just installed an ac unit that uses evaporation to cool the air. It's an adobe air mmb12e. Works great. Found it on craigs list. Was barely used. They were asking $150 or best offer. Ended up getting it for $90!!:thumb: When I went to pick it up it was much larger than the pic made it look and I found out it's an industrial model that can cool 1000sqft. So I think it should work in my 3'x17' space :laughtwo: Saw a new one online and it was $500 so I'm excited I got such a good deal. The only downside is that it really jacked my humidity up. Even with my great ventilation it's hard to keep it lower than 80%. I'm gonna have to get a dehumidifier to offset the increase. Have you noticed any similar issues with yours and the humidity?
The plants are lookn' real nice. Glad to see some pix of the l.s.d. When I posted pix of mine to get a lil assistance with an issue I was having 420 changed all the "l.s.d." titles to "Barneys" bc they don't like the reference to the other substance I guess. Glad they haven't sensored yours...yet:goodluck: I also picked up a little brick of coca and will be trying out the "Slim Cloner 420" tray soon. Keep up the good work and as always enjoying the show and the education. :rollit:

Those things should be blinking and flashing in patterns, lol.

The pistils on this one Jillybean are different from the others. They are super fuzzy and look like pipe cleaners or mascara applicators. I really like the way they look - anyone know if this is common?

I've often said that pistils under magnification look like a piece of yarn that's gone all frizzy but when you can plainly see that with the naked eye... I guess that girl REALLY wants to be pollinated, lol. Maybe she intends to take over the world?

My Barney's looked the same way at one point. It was a result of a small spike in pH (the plants started drinking so much more it raised the pH faster than I caught it) combined with too much ventilation caused the plants to transpire even more and suck up both water and nutes too quickly. When I fixed both the probs went away.

But I have noticed their roots tend to grow in bursts and the plant does as well. Can make it tricky to anticipate spikes or changes. Some days I don't need to balance the water, some days I do.

I have some HUGE - waaaay too big for still in veg plants going right now - but they'll make for good pics and they've been healthy for a month now. I'll get pics up soon.

I love the Sat Nite Fever of your room! And those pistles look like the ones on my plant I call DogHair. Its definitely one of my favs.

Dig That Scene!

Fabulous setup Slimm and I've gotta say... If you have it right then everyone else has it wrong. Ha ha! The vertical HPS, LED side lights, hempy buckets - I've never seen anything like it. Here's wishing you a fabulous yield.

You've definitely got me thinking about hempy buckets and coco medium. I started a new grow with a new type of soil I thought would be better but it turned out to be too hot and it's slowing down the grow. Using a relativley inert medium seems much more appealing because it would give me much more control over the nute mix and ppms.

I will continue to watch with great interest.......

Thanks usul, I'm just learning and trying things. I make a lot of mistakes and sometimes I learn from them. I had the LED panels lying around from my last grow. I originally went with LEDs because I have a heat problem. I found LEDGirl's claims for her HGL lights to be inconsistent with reality, so I switched to CMH, which runs cooler than other HIDs and has a fuller spectrum. I finally bit the bullet and installed A/C and now I can run more lights! So I pulled the LEDs out of the closet. Lol, I could have just installed a 1k HPS had I put the A/C in first. The stacked vertical lights are a solution to my low ceiling - 6.75 feet, and my desire to increase yields in a small space. I ran in soil my last grow and didn't amend it with enough perlite so I ended up with nute problems that were hard to solve because it took so long to dry out the pots. I found hempies + coco to be the perfect solution. Fast growth, forgiving yet providing total control over the nutrient mix in the media, clean and simple.

I agree with you on the inert medium. It's great to have such control. You eliminate many of the pathogens that are found in soil with an inert media.

Week 6 of Flowering

A few weeks ago I moved some of the less vigorous plants out of the indoor garden and into the yard. Their location gives them about 7 hours of full sun and then the rest of the day they are in shade. It is interesting to see what they are doing with this light. They are maintaining an early flowering profile, where the flowers are still numerous yet small with a vegetative growth pattern. They are not showing any signs of re-veg stress.

These two plants went out more recently and are not showing as much of the re-veg vigor.

The outdoor plants all went on Osmocote Plus a week ago. They are starting to show less consumption of the bottom leaves. The plant below still have one leaf that is a hold over from the GH nutes.

The indoor plants have about 3 weeks to go. I have dropped the micro and have them on GH Bloom and H2O2. They are showing a slight Mg deficiency and I am wondering if I should continue CaMg - anyone know if this is a good idea this late into flowering? I have some concerns that the extra Ca and Mg can lock out the P. Any and all opinions are welcome.

My only indica going 12/12 from seed in a hempy style smart pot with Osmocote nutes from the beginning.

One other thing to note is that about one week ago I hit all the plants with some hormones used to elicit an SAR response in the plants. This slowed their development to a crawl as they mounted a defense against herbivores. They are now beginning to resume flower growth. I do not have a control group so no way to judge the effectiveness of this treatment, although they did resin up a lot during the week. I may do a control group next time around.

Are those autos or are you managing to keep them small like that because of the lower periods of light? Those look like they'd be easy to camouflage amongst other plants on a patio/porch. The one time I tried it I ended up with a rather suspicious-looking potted... tree, got paranoid, and gave it away.

Depending on what part of the world the genetics in those plants originated, I would expect them to remain in flower. Not all strains require a full 12 hours of darkness. I think a lot of people use that amount because they grow multiple strains simultaneously, because they wish to maintain the 40:60 ratio for easy (and early) determination of the harvest date, or because they're lazy and don't want to experiment with each and every strain (and with me it was all three but admittedly mostly the latter, lol).

I never tried using only the Bloom component of GH Flora. Interesting. Is Mg the only thing your plants seem to be needing? Are you using tap water or ~0 PPM (can't remember)? If tap, you might be right in worrying about giving too much Ca. I believe epsom salt is magnesium sulfate (no calcium). That might be a viable option. I'm not feeling very intelligent at present, so IDK.

Osmocote. I just read/replied about it in another thread. Will be interested in seeing how that goes for you. I know that a lot of people like it for other types of plants but didn't know it was used for cannabis.

What hormones did you use? I've not got much knowledge about such matters and wouldn't mind picking up a little information (as always).

These plants are sativa dominant hybrids not autos. The outdoor plants are the runts taken out of the indoor garden. The bushier ones are pretty heavily LST'ed now so that is keeping them small. It has been cool here and we have had some rain so the plants outdoors are moving slow. Although indoors the plants are shorter than I had planned as well. I thought this strain would stretch more - next run will be better there.

I am using RO water with epsom salts added. Plants are showing a little Mg deficiency. I have no idea if I should keep using the epsom salts to mitigate this so late into flowering.

Just thinking out loud here - given the medium you're growing in I think it'd be easy to flush about 1 week before harvest and you'd be fine. On my previous grow I was using CalMag+ right up to the last week. I did a test-smoke several weeks before harvest and it had a heavy chemical taste - kind of like pine cleaner. I flushed one week before harvest and everything got very mellow and sweet in no time. I was growing in soil with 33% perlite and I think your medium would flush even better. So, I'd suggest a good dose of cal-mag plus whatever seems best right up until a week before harvest then give the girls a big flush and you'll be in great shape. Shucks, you're only six weeks in to flower so you've got another 4 weeks to go? Plenty of time to get things sorted out.

Just my two cents worth, and just one data point for you. Looks to me like you've got things well under control and are looking forward to a great harvest.

Thanks usul - I'll use your advise and keep them on CaMg or epsom till the last week.

I'm pleased with how the grow is going - huge improvement from last time. Hoping for these buds to swell up a lot.

Slimm,

Looks like you are grows are going well. Glad to see you are having fun doing it too. ;)

Thanks munki, how ya been?

This run has been lots of trial and error though much smoother than the last grow. My biggest problem has been been misjudging the amount of stretch and lots of fiddling around with things - consequently my plants are a little small. They look and smell super yummy though and I have identified a couple of keepers for moms for next time.

I'm doing well, thank you.

Once you have your mothers picked and clones taken, you can really get to know your plants' particular characteristics. With that knowledge, yields can be maximized. The patient grower is often rewarded.

Nice looking grow Slimm! A little advice, if you still have that second light way up in the air its not hitting the plants, its hitting the wall. Next time around you should either lay that tube horizontally so the both lights hit the plants, or, figure out a way to hook them up so both of the lights are just above the canopy, maybe a big S in a way. If your not set on air cooling them I would just run them both bare and hang them both at the same height in the center, example:X's lights and O's plants
O O O
..X X
O O O
You'll double your yield, I promise! And lower those LED's, blast them right into the sides!

Thanks for pointing that out hclip. I inverted the top tube a while back when I realized that I was not going to hit my height target. The plants are bathed in light bottom to top.

What's been going on, Slimm ?

I lopped off a first Jillybean test bud today, gave it a quick cure and lit it up. I was pretty surprised at how smooth the smoke was. I have to attribute this to cutting over to CR nutes two weeks ago (I owe DocBud a big debt for this great idea). I have been watering with 5.8 ph tap with a bit of epsom and a little Koolbloom Dry (they were a little P deficient when I made the switch). The potency was quite good considering most of the trichomes are still clear. Trichome development is pretty dense. These girls are projected to finish up in 10 days but I think its going to take longer given the color of the trichomes - more time to plump up! There is one plant that is just making fat buds - twice the size of the others. That plant will be cloned and run again next time and they will veg a little longer so I can use both lights =). The plants are shorties this time around - and I am damn happy about it because they are healthy and happy. No aphids, mites or PM. I'm learning - get the environment right and the plants are less vulnerable to attack.

Update on the plants I moved outdoors several weeks back. They are still sitting between veg and flower and have reverted back to three bladed leaves. The odd thing is that they are still flowering and they are growing canes with small leaves and small flowers every inch or less. I wonder what will happen when they go fully into flower. Will they stretch all over again? Will all of these many flower sites continue to produce flowers then? Now they are just putting out little flower sites but not really developing the sites. If all these sites produce there will be some very dense nugz on these plants. Remember these were well into flower when I pulled them from the room a few weeks ago, so they have been hormonally challenged.

I neem drenched the outdoor plants and its quite effective. I see spider mite webbing on the plants and have seen one or two mites (squashed) though no other mites are present. There are also a couple of bush crickets that just sit on the plants and do not eat them - that is probably the neem at work. It makes the insects forget to eat or breed and die of starvation. This can be done every three weeks and keeps the plants systemically protected. I'm not sure how it affects soil beneficials but I believe it only affects things that bite into the plant.

I made some ~96% ethanol today for use in making concentrates by removing most of the water from 151 proof (75%) Everclear. I have been doing a lot of reading on perfume and how to extract essential oils from plant matter into concretes and how to refine the concrete to an absolute. I plan to make some nice absolute amber as soon as one more part arrives. I'm currently using very pure butane and ethanol but am making plans for an extractor using a much safer solvents in the future. One of the EllEssDee, a runt, has volunteered to be a test plant for the initial extractions. I will process fresh frozen material to limit collection to what is outside the plant.

I have had the AC, circulation fans and lights dialed in for a few weeks now and it's been nice to relax and not worry about the room all the time. I am even thinking of doing a little traveling this weekend for the first time in a few months! I love my girls but I need balance.

I will try to get some photos posted tomorrow.
