Slimm's Urban Hang Suite

I have the option of venting my exhaust into the attic, which I do when the weather requires it. The carbon filters in my tents do a good job, at least with the strains I've grown thus far, whether the exhaust is vented into the room or into the attic.

Ozone generators can be very effective. Restoration and renewal companies use good ones regularly to rid homes of smoke odors after fires, and other nasty foul odors, but like you, I'd also have a lot of questions before getting one.

I had an acquaintance that worked in that business, and since I was curious about them, he lent it to me for a couple of days so I could check it out.

It worked well, but it made the air in the room smell funny. My wife didn't notice anything, but I found it very unpleasant.

Really hard to describe the smell. It makes the air smell "clean", but sort of like bleach or something. If that issue could be resolved, I'd consider one if I needed additional de-stinkification.

Cool, thanks Horse I will.

Spent the day working on the new space. Moved all of the gear out of my old grow room. I have yet to build out the 2k vert and the veg room but I have enough room to finish the current grow in there while I finish setting up the vert. I will use the LED panels in the veg / mother room. I need to buy the 1k HPS bulbs, a couple of electronic ballasts and tap into an unused dual pull 240w 30amp circuit to power the bloom room.

I'm familiar with that smell. It's the same smell you get when you rub an inflated balloon on your hair. Thunderstorms close to the ground produce a lot of ozone - you can smell it after a big storm.

It sounds like you were using it in the grow room. I plan to use it in a room that will be used solely to eliminate orders. No plants in there. From what I hear ozone and plants do not get along too well. I think if I pull the air out of the room into the storage room, mix it with ozone real good and then shoot it straight up over the building, there should not be too many issues. I have to figure out how large a unit to buy now...

I also plan to run a scrubber within the bloom room, recirculating grow room air, to help remove some of the odors as well.

Laser printers are another source for ozone produced from the corona wire. Yep, that smell!

Harvest Update

The JillyBean and EllEssDee were harvested suddenly, in the wee hours of the morning this past Saturday. After a few of stouts it was decided, with half of the plants showing 40% amber and the rest 30%, it was high time to chop. Yeehaw!

The plants were stripped of all major leaves and the colas placed in the drying chamber. I had a little trouble getting the chamber to maintain the RH so they ended up in jars four days later - sooner than I had planned. They are getting burped to maintain a consistent RH, too dry for mold and too wet to dry. There is one more small jar not pictured here.

The trim was all very high quality and I extracted 5 grams or so of absolute. I used a first wash with very pure butane and a second wash with ~96% ethanol. After the first wash, the product was a striking bright amber color. Unfortunately I did not take a photo of that and during the second wash I used glassware with some oil on it from a previous attempt causing the absolute to come out dark. It still smokes great, shatters at room temp and can be reformed with a little heat from a flame, so I'm happy! Next run I will post some pics of the amber.

I'm not very confident in my trimming ability. I have done so little and don't really have a process that I like. I could use a few tips. I trimmed them up a little more before putting them in the jars because it was easier to see what I liked and did not like once they were part way dry. I tried to remove the tips of the bud leaves and the whole leaf if they were very large. Here are a few pics after the pre-chop trim job.

Lookin super yummy dude! Right on. I'm kind of in the same boat as you on the trimming so if anyone knows of videos showing trimming techniques, please share them!

:bravo:

BTW, those sensors you have in the jars, where did you get them? I'm intrigued by the scientific stuff.

I was fortunate enough to obtain these packs of H3ad's newly released Casey Jones! Here they are in all their splendor. 42 seeds in all. With the new grow room needing a few more things and upcoming travel, family plans, etc. I will hold off on planting these for a few weeks at least.

A few photos of the new grow room. I still need to put down a pond liner and hang two lights but its progressing well.

I will be quite busy in July so I decided to bring the "runts" I had thrown outside back into the room to finish. It allows me to make sure my changes are dialed in as I make them with little risk. With that said there is no telling what these "runts" will do as they have gone from flower to partial re-veg and now back to flower again. I am seeing them starting to stretch again, and will not call them runts any longer. These plants are highly LST'ed to grow well in a vert and they are somewhat flat. They may actually end up getting quite large - I have lots of light to throw at them should that happen.

Nice harvest slimm!

Buds look delicious!

I think you did a pretty nice job trimming.

I just spin the bud slowly and keep trimming leaves that stick out until I have them manicured as closely as I want them.

It's just like anything else, gets easier with practice.

great job bro!

+rep if I could

trimming is one of those things that hard to explain and is easier to show. but all i do is cut off all the tips on the sugar leaves and cut all the fan leaves right at the stem. dont try to remove all the sugar leaves just give them an hair cut, then when they dry they will fold over and you will have nice frosty buds. i always trim close at the top of the buds and less at the bottom, kinda like a x-mass tree. that way the buds dont get the leafy tear drop look. its hard to explain. I've trimmed so much bud in my time its just comes easy now. you will get the same way, you will talking to a friend or who ever and not even be paying attention and you will still trim nice.

one word of advice take your time and really pay attention, I take trimming very serious and hate leafy buds, all the hard work u did you want to have nice looking buds.

just think x-mass tree. sorry i could find the best way to explain it

All your plants look great! I love the look of your L!

I think your trimming is pretty darn good. As was said - it gets way easier with practice. One easy tip for ya: Hold the bud/branch upside down. Trim from the bottom up. You want to cut the leaves off at their base.

Thanks SS. I'm super critical of my own work.

That's a great explanation and just what I needed to get the right picture in my mind when I'm trimming. I like the way your buds turned out on your last grow irishboy and hope to do as well one day!

That's a great explanation and just what I needed to get the right picture in my mind when I'm trimming. I like the way your buds turned out on your last grow irishboy and hope to do as well one day!

just remember to cut off all the tips on the leafs, they make things not look as good. if you have a frost sugar leaf not get all picky and cut it way down, your just losing potency. they will fold over and look real nice. things only look bad when you leave the top of the nugs with leaf, then it makes it look real leafy and not sexy IMO. if you trim them like an X-mass tree, the bottoms will fold over nice and tight and you will get the look where when you see a good nug and the bottom of it is just covered in resin. dont get me wrong you still want to trim the bottom just not as much as the tops. remember if it doesnt have allot of frost on it cut it off. all fan leaves need to be cut off at the stem, or when it drys it will be easy to cut off the stem also, but i try to do it when i am trimming.

its always good to rotate the buds as you trim and its also good to hold them up side down, it will help you get the fan leafs off at the stem. basically hit it at all angles but upside down works real good and is fast for fan leafs.

when it comes to trimming i am very picky, and do not like smoking leafy bud. so this is just my picky way of trimming. hope it helps

Good info! All of the leaves on the buds were super frosty so that made it hard for me because I was felt that I was reducing the potency. In retrospect, the buds were super frosty so I probably didn't impact potency a whole lot. Besides, I used all that great trim to make some very nice hash oil.

I trimmed them right side up and I think your suggestion of doing them upside down makes a lot more sense to me. I have a couple plants to chop in the next week or so and I will try your suggestions then! I have also decided to grow bigger buds so I can trim with impunity! Why didn't I think of that before. :grinjoint:

That is a great grow room Slimm. You could do all kinds of mad scientist experiments in there. Bet you could grow a 15 foot Sativa monster in there if you could get enough vertical lighting.

For this current grow, you should consider building some movable, reflective partition walls. Set them up around the plants so the outside leaves can get some reflected CMH goodness.

Great suggestion munki. I'm thinking of using that reflective bubble wrap stuff to make curtains around the tables.

I'm starting to look at some land race sativas to fill that vertical space - this will be fun! I can probably stack three or four 400 watt cmh bulbs in cool tubes above the existing cmh to make a really tall light column for the sativas.

I just picked up two 1k watt Ushio red/blue enhanced HPS bulbs and a couple of e-ballasts and cool tubes for the two new tables that will be placed in the big empty area of the room. I'm not sure if I want to stack another set there or not. I may keep things simple for now and expand vertically later.

One problem running the tubes vertically is the intake duct for the tubes is going to be in my way no matter where I run it. I want to keep the ducting runs as short and straight as possible so this is a challenge. I'm trying to do this so I won't be trpping over the ducting.

Hey Slimm, the new set up is sweet... but I hate you for all that headroom :)

Congrats on the pretty harvest, Rasputin can take control! Pranqster is a lot more fun :smokin:

:peace:

My first grow space had a six point five foot ceiling height. I used it to learn and overcome the constraints. So I feel like I earned the head room! That said, I may not be able to take advantage of the height as I am actively looking for a new grow space. I want to do more outdoor and greenhouse growing.

I really wanted to get a hold of Ace seeds limited release of Nepjam x Oacaxan but I missed them.

Pranqster huh? I'll keep an eye out for that one.

We were just given 2 Jack Herer clones, your new headroom would come in handy ;)

I don't know anything about Nepjam... but Oacaxan... a pot from my yute :grinjoint:

Pranqster's tricky to find :) Go to Fort Bragg for the fresh stuff :grinjoint:

@HorseBadortiz, I found Pranqster at whole foods! It's good, although I like the old Rasputin better - I like my beer dark.

I hope everyone had a great 4th. I made travel plans to be away for a week over the 4th this year. Just before leaving I pulled the 4 plants from outside (these were culls from my indoor that I just could not kill so I put them in the yard and left them alone) into the room and planned to let them go on auto. However, as I was watering them I noticed a very strong rotten egg smell. I also noticed that the leaves were yellowing and spotting. I ran about 5 gallons of plain water through each one, then a couple gallons of ~1.5% H2O2, then another dose of ~1.5% H2O2 with Hygrozyme mixed in and left town. One week later they are all four doing great! I had always dreaded the possibility of root rot and now that I have battled it I can say it can be overcome pretty easily.

I'm really glad I saved these plants now since two of them are EllEssDee and I harvested very little of that superior herb.

Harvest update:

Well, we knew it would be a meager harvest. 130 grams of Jilly bean, 10 grams of EllEssDee, 4 grams of sharksbreath, and a gram or so of LA Woman.

The sharksbreath and LA Woman were totally abused and grown 12/12 from seed so no surprises there. The Jillybean and EllEssDee were both given too little veg time for a decent harvest. I really focused on plant health and potency with the JB and Ell and I am quite pleased with the results. Next time I will work a better yield into the equation.

JB and Ell were cured very carefully and are approaching the RH range for long term curing and storage. For consistency sake, the SB and LAW were abused during drying as well =). They were hung in the dark until dry.

I have not smoked the SB or the LAW yet. The JB is a really happy smoke - upbeat and relaxing. Great for socializing. The Ell is hard to describe, It's upbeat yet somewhat disorienting - its almost narcotic sort of like a certain product of poppies.

Next up:

I'm going out of town again, this time for longer - hopefully the plants will survive. If not its no big deal. I have more meds then I can use in the near term. And I'm preparing for the main attraction. I have 50 or so Casey Jones seeds, from H3ad's latest release and I plan to do a couple runs to select mothers and settle in with this strain for a while. I will be hanging 3 1k lights in the bloom room when I get back in town and setting up the LEDs in the Keiki room. For those not familiar with the term, Keiki is what my Hawaiian friend calls baby plants.
