Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

Smells and trichomes are popping up everywhere now. I have kind of nailed down most of what each plant is going to smell like. Kind of hard to smell a second plant after the first LMAO. Not that I can explain them. I can just smell them LMAO. T2 has lost lots of its lemon and is now more just a cleaner smell.

The major difference is bud density. I still don't know how they will dry but everything is plenty firm now. Not just on top. the density is there on the lower buds too. Everything still needs to bulk up for the end. From everything I can see so far this is going to be the best harvest I have had from one light. Now I just need it smokable. Only 2 plants are getting any food these days. Last feeding is only a light dose of M.G. Bloom. I spell it that way not because I am worried about people knowing I use it M.G. It is because I can't spell the M word worth a shit LMAO.

I am seeing plenty of yellowing so I know nitrogen levels are low in most plants. I am not seeing anything else though. No signs of to much or to little flowering nuits. I really don't need to feed at all because production looks good so far. Still I want plants to do their best. Now I don't add nuits if the are over 50% red hairs. After that they are on their own. The Gorilla Widow has lots of white hairs. Breeders say it has a fast flower time. I checked the trichomes. Most are cloudy. From the looks of it when the hairs turn red it will be finished. The Peyote Critical has all red hairs and still has a few clear trichomes. If it wasn't for the fact it finished up so early I would be harvesting it now. I flushed a bunch of water through it last watering. It drank that up so I plan to do it again to try and get this plant flushed enough. The fact the plant drank up all that water pretty fast tells me it still isn't quite ready yet, which is a good sign.

I will end my 4th week into bloom with Skunk#1 Fem Fast from Seedsman in MG MC...these nasty, nasty words. I have only been able to give it 330 ppm (1.5 ml) of FloraNova Bloom without telling me .... oh no mister! Lol. So I wonder just how the flower sites will bulk up in week 5 and 6. It looks really good to me. But hey it's my first grow...Good luck on your last leg :peace:

Hey Pennywise. Remember 3 days ago when I said I liked Pineapple but didn't have any genetics. Well that changed LMAO. One strain I have always loved to look at pictures of is Ed Rosenthal Super Bud. That crap is just amazing. I was checking it out because of that. Now that I am taking better pictures I might want better stuff to take pictures of LMAO. When I found out it was pretty stable and smelled like pineapple punch that sealed the deal.

On the finishing up part YEP. I know the Tangiloe will go long so it might get fed again. It and one Liberty Haze still have over 75% white hairs. Everything else is over 50% and is on just water now. The fast finishing Peyote Critical got flushed again last night. It will probably be harvested when the soil dries out. One other Peyote Critical just got flushed for the first time. I might do it twice too. All other plants should only need one flush.

I got a few pictures of T2 yesterday. Trichomes are starting to swell up and become much more noticeable.

Also I moved the temperature sensor to the other side of the tent last night. It showed temps in the low 80's. I figured the tent was warmer than what was reading. The sensor was right above where fresh air comes in. Higher temps helps explain these massive buds.

One plant doesn't look great. Blueberry Headband. One of my favorite tasting strains ever. Smell is there so taste should be. How potent it is going to be is what I wonder. Looks like it needs to bulk up and frost up a lot.

I’ve heard a lot of good reviews on Super Bud.

I haven't really checked yet. I didn't need too. I know enough about Ed to be real interested in anything he made. The price tag kept me away before. He is not going to put his name on something that is crap that is for sure. Not a great way to continue your legacy. I can't wait to work with and grow it. All so I can take pictures of it LMAO.

Me too Pennywise LMAO. I spent a little time reading about it yesterday. Reviews were mixed on flavor so I don't know if I will get my pineapple or not. It is fairly strong, Not Og, Stable, and different. That matters a lot. Now that I have it coming. I realized how much I wanted to grow it just because of the Ed Rosenthal connection. Most of my years of growing have been with his books. He was the original growing advisory for High Times. I first remember his articles on land race strains he smoked. He would write a 2 page article on one strain. I learned so much from him I use to read Ask Ed just to answer the questions along with him LOL.

I also noticed all the new Cookies and G.G. #4 hybrids I got have Og bred into them. That's fine with the G.G. it is supposed to be fuely. Cookies not so much. I have been wondering what I could use to make a sweet hybrid with. I have some Sandstorm from Cannabiogen for a sweet hash plant profile. I plan to cross it with Killer Queen for my hash plant. It isn't a good fit for the new strains out today. ERSB is going to be my go to for breeding Cookies now. Pretty sure I am going to go with the indica growth pattern if I can find a male. This another strain I want to breed with a male. Out of these 10 seeds I will probably self both the indica and the sativa pheno's just in case. Then breed with the indica male. Weed is supposed to be the same. Mostly it is growth pattern that is different.

I have lots of regular strains but only 6 or 7 that I plan to use the males to breed with. The only flavor profile I don't have a good breeding male from is lemon. I may find one in the T2 hybrid in time but who knows. I plan to self Super Lemon Haze but it would be really nice to have a lemon male to breed into it. Sure wish I had that Jack the Ripper now. I do have the one feminized seed I found when I tried to self it. MAYBE???? it look a little light colored. It is the super frosty pheno I had but it should be female too. I also have some Lemon Skunk from a friend but I don't know enough about it to breed with. Probably end up with DNA Lemon Skunk before everything is all over if I can get in a regular strain.

There I go rambling about breeding LMAO. Oh well its what I do lol. Especially when every thing is running good. I now have full participation of all the plants I wanted to have this grow. This is the first time I never had to add a strain after germination. I only had to replace 1 seed of Bag of Oranges. The first didn't pop after a week. It was a hard shell thing. When I planted the last seed I crushed it to see. It may have popped if left longer I don't know. I really wanted to see if it was good though so no big deal. Bag of Oranges is going to do the dirty with a SSH male so I am going to have more orange one way or the other. Tangie too LMAO. Bag of Oranges is going to have a slutty reputation when I get done with her if I find the orange I want LMAO.

Plants in the LED tent look to be finishing up faster than the HPS tent for some reason. They are both different pheno's so that may be the only reason. All the Choccrit plants are close to finishing. The one in the LED tent maybe a little more. The Bubblicious plants are lots different. I will be flushing both the plants in the LED tent next watering.

The Gorilla Widow plant has hairs that dry a very light tan. I almost didn't notice when they went from fresh and white to dry and withered. Color didn't change much. It won't be the first to finish like the numbers say but it will be done soon after. Better get the drying tent up and running. I will probably start filling it next week.

I let a night go by with out taking pictures. May not have been a good idea. I need to get some finish pictures on some of these plants before I have to start trimming. Once that happens I am going to be hired out till near the end.

I tried to clean my scope with grain alcohol. It didn't work lol. Might have if I had not let it get coated quite so bad with resin. I order a couple more so I can really check the trichomes. 6 bucks a piece I can get a new one every year. The Peyote Critical is getting really close. It has had all red hairs for a long time. Trichomes are just now clouding over. I could probably take it now with no problem. This is a indica strain so taking it longer into flower won't matter. I want all the body I can get from this strain.

I won't be convinced till I can smoke it all with out problems. As of now it looks like everything is flushing out fine. Most are doing it on their own. Some plants I flush a bunch of water through just to be sure. Lots more yellow in the tent these days. Here is the last picture of the whole tent. Next week plants are going to be coming out.

I have solved the mystery where all the hairs came from on Tangiloe. It is the Tahoe Og. Now that buds are starting to swell out you can notice. It isn't that there are more pistils just more hairs coming out of each one. I have seen this before but not quite to this extent. Each pistil has has lot's of hairs coming out of it. I have seen this before with Tahoe. Just not every damn one of them with multiple hairs. This is actually a good thing. I have had strains that end up mostly hair and little bud. That is not going to be the case here.

Tangiloe buds are. finely started spreading out It is covered in trichomes. In a week it is going to make some interesting photos. Speaking of photos. I have a couple of the last pictures of Peyote Critical and the tall Choccrit pheno. Even though the Peyote Critical dried up all its hairs weeks ago. Trichome development is about the same in both strains. I am not looking for much amber. Just all or mostly cloudy. Both plants are looking good.

I have forgotten to mention. I am already smoking test buds from some of the plants. Mostly the early Peyote Critical. I have tried 2 of those and ended up with immature smoke like I figured. They look done but still need time for the trichomes to cloud over. This strain is a fast flower late finisher. I hate those.

Last night I tried the first joint of one of the LED plants. It was the Choccrit plant. As far as I can tell this hybrid is going to be everything I hoped it would be. Even after just a 3 day dry it had good flavor. It was also pretty much how the plant smelled. Or just the opposite really. The plant smells like fruit with a hint of pine. Flavor is pine with a hint of sweetness or fruit at the end. High was similar to Chocoloco but stronger.

Lots of head to the high but much more. This is a midday to night time weed. I was lots of things but motivated was not one of them LMAO. This picture shows how close the HPS Choccrit are. I am finding the LED plants are a week or so ahead of the others. As you can tell trichomes are starting to cloud over nicely.

All the new starts are doing great. Everyone knows about hybrid vigor. I have noticed it a lot in strains I have made. In most case's these days strains are going to have it. They are all hybrids and not stable strains. I wasn't sure how the SSH was going to do along with all these hybrids. Its growing better LOL. You think that would be a good thing. Only problem if they are the fastest growing and they stretch the most that could be problematic. I was already planning on basing flowering time on the fact of the stretch from SSH. I am not to sure I want to flower everything that early if they grow as well as they look like they will.

Big news on the subject of light. I am giving up my 1000 watt HPS. Yep I said it! I am going to run 600 watt HPS lights this run. In the tent set up I have 1000 watts is a bit overkill. It is way overkill for the 4' x 4' tent. I might as well see what 600 watts can do. This opens up lots of power to be used else where. I can now run the 600 and a 4 light COB led set up on the same breaker.

600 watt HPS lights are the most efficient of the HID lights. Or it used to be that way. If I can get a plant to perform at its best under a 600 watt light. I should have the same outcome as the plants I have been giving too much light too. Last years seed run went really well under 400 watts. That help in my decision. The fact that I am only a bulb change away from going back to the old way helps even more with this decision. The only tent in question is the big tent. I know I am going with a 600 in the 4 x 4 tent. I just need to make the right decision on what plants to put where LOL. Pretty sure I won't be growing the SSH under the LED's though LMAO.

Another thing to mention. Not sure if people realize it. You can run a 600 watt light on a 1000 watt ballast. While it may not be perfect it can be done. You just can't run them on full power. Bulbs will burn out faster with more power. I did get new ballast's to start with. The thing is I don't need back up's I can always use my 1000 watt ballast's at 75% if need be.

Got to love my life. Now with things getting busy for the holidays. I have to take a day and re-pot plants LOL. What is really funny is trying to convince people my life is that busy LMAO.

Some time this next week I will be re-potting everything to 1 gallon pots. I will also be switching to a 600 watt MH bulb. This is the first time I have tried to veg with a different bulb. I don't know that it will help. I know it won't hurt. I will also be looking into changing how I plumb in the air cooled light fixture. I am not going to connect it to the filter unless I have too. With a 1000 watt I had temps where I liked them. I don't know that I will be getting enough warmth from the 600 watt bulb rigged that way. I have almost 10 degree's to work with on the high side. Thats with a 1000 watt light. With this new way of rigging I am hoping to get temps more in the mid 80's. I still have some extremely cold weather coming. I will need to keep temps up for it when it happens.

For the filter to work well I need to run lots of air through it. This will cool the tent to much with only a 600 watt light. All this I know. How I solve all this I don't know LMAO.

Looks like I need to figure a new name. Choccrit while funny is just not going to cut it. No chocolate so why have it in the name. Thing is I am pretty sure I am going to be keeping it around. I tried the first test bud from the tall Choccrit last night. 3 day dry so flavor was not what it will be later on. Still both plants I have tried lean more to sweet and fruity. There is no dankness from the critical that caused some of the chocolate smell from it. The Critical did add flavor. By adding so much extra crystal it also raised the terpene profile to the point the flavor is coming through.

All this is no big deal. I like the shit, out of what is there. The tall Choccrit is Chocoloco with lots of extra crystal. Effects hit hard and fast. Right in the face. This stuff has so much of a head high. It seems to end at your chin. I smoked a little more and the effects got stronger. All the way to the end of the joint my head got higher and the high never went passed my chin. This is a whole different day time weed. This is for fishing and what not. This stuff is for when you are not around people. While you have plenty of energy to do things your stoned and you know it LOL. Plus there really isn't any way to hide your high with this stuff. With in a minute of smoking your eye lids start lowering. Trust me you are going to look stoned LMAO.

I knew I was going to need a new name the whole time if I liked this strain. I have been coming up with nothing. Till this morning writing this. Of course I wanted to have the strain names in it. That don't work. Next is funny or cool names that describe the strain in some way. Kind of wanted to go with Fucking Fruity. Still might LMAO. It is not going mainstream who cares if the name has profanity in it. Now it is a toss up between Fucking Fruity and Headie.

Headie sounds like it may be a Headband hybrid. I can't help that. Thing is the high "IS" heady as hell. The fact that I am now trying to figure out a name means this hybrid came out better than I hoped. This was the strain I bred to see if I can blend highs. While the first plant had more of a all around high. Neither had much body to the high like the Critical did. So while I am not getting a hybrid type high like I wanted. I did get the high I wanted. This shit is going to be fun to smoke.

Re-pot went well as I figured it would. I mixed up a bunch of soil and screwed up my back in the process but got it done. Here is the mix I used.
3 cf of Ocean Forest
2 cf Happy Frog
1 cf perlite/vermiculite

Soil is really light and will be a big difference between it and the M.G. I used last grow. I Didn't have enough 1 gallon pots so I had to up pot 3 of them to 2 gallon pots. I am going to try and decide if I want to drop the 1 gallon pots altogether. I don't have many problems re-potting plants so it is never a big deal. Both technics work fine and have their use's. After all this time I am not sure what is best. I never paid that much attention to that part.

As of now the starts are under a 600 watt MH with no air cooled hood. Temps seem to be working ok so far. After seeing what this tent is doing I will decide what hood to run in the 5 x 5 tent. I may still use the 1000 watt in it. I can always use a smaller LED in the overflow tent.

The biggest question now is how fast the SSH is going to make me send them into flower. They will need a re-pot so that might slow them down for a day or 2 but not much. I really have to watch out that all the plants don't get to tall to go into the LED tent if I need to use it.

I will also be sexing plants before I re-pot this time. At least for the Clown Royal. I will probably be tossing all the males from it. I may cross it into something if they really impress me. Cataract Kush would be a good candidate for some blueberry flavor and still be pretty strong in the end.

Lots of strains will be finishing up next week. Looks like I will be spending the holidays with those I love most, my plants. It only gets weird when you figure out I will be killing them at that time LMAO.

Well I don't have to worry about flushing anymore. I actually my timing was off a little. I have tons of yellow leaves everywhere. I am just now starting to see other signs of nutrient deficiency's. Not sure what as I am not going to change things as of now. Water all the way to the end now. Lots of strains could have used another week or 2 of nuits. That's about it though. I am going to call this a success. There is plenty of weight on all the plants. I only noticed a couple plants that might have did better with more nutrients. The Liberty Haze are starting to firm up and add some weight. One of which I think I could have fed more early on. I will have to remember this when it comes to SSH. I think they are going to grow similarly.

The hairs on Tangiloe have finally dried to the point I can see the buds under them. They are not so pretty now LOL. Big, knobby, and covered in crystal pretty much covers what is left. I plan to get the last pictures of it tonight. There is a major difference between Tangiloe and T2. I won't know what I like best till I can smoke some. I do know that T2 has more of a Jacks Cleaner 2 smell to it now. I don't know how the flavor is going to come out. The smell is starting to get stronger and better every day. At one time I only had 3 T2 seeds from Tangilope #1. Tangilope #2 was pollenated with Tahoe Og pollen. It was also right next to the Chocoloco clone I pollinated with Jacks Cleaner 2. This screw up gave me a bunch more seeds. I am up to about 20 now. Because of this I may not regenerate T2. If I still only had 3 I would have too. This plant looks that good. I am still trying to figure out if I want to try and regenerate and self this plant. I could run it with a clone or 2 from the starts I have going now. Hmmmm.

This grow has shown me a lot about Jacks Cleaner 2 and Chocoloco. They were both used in hybrids different ways. It seems they both did really good with adding their part to my hybrids. That sure makes the 1000 seeds I have of Chocoloco x Jacks Cleaner 2 a lot more intresting.

Chocoloco hybrid raised it's resin content easily with a little help from the Critical. It did this and still kept a lot of what I liked about the Chocoloco. That is a good sign. Ie smell, and high

Jacks Cleaner 2 seems to have had enough of a influence on Tangilope to change the smell. I want to say it added Crystal and weight but I can't be sure about that yet. The fact that the smell transferred over I am pretty sure a lot more came with it. The difference between the 2 step sisters is huge.
