Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

Seeds seeds seeds. So far 3 plants have put out pretty little brown seeds.

Of course the Chocoloco has. It has tons more just waiting to finish. Still a few immature seeds so I will let this one go. trichomes are all plenty clear also. I plan to use all the plant material for edibles so I will take these plants past when seeds are finished and harvest when the trichomes are ready.

The Jacks Cleaner has put out a few already with more seeds finishing. The trichomes on this plant say it is ready but the seeds don't LOL. Pretty much the opposite of the Chocoloco. As much as I want to smoke this stuff I want as many good seeds as I can get. Might as well let it go tell they all finish. This plant is starting to smell pretty good.

Last but never least is the Glueberry. I just found a beautiful brown seed popping out of the top of the seeded branch. I knew this one was making seeds so it is no big surprise. Nice to get a brown one though. This plant is pretty much ready to harvest now. I am just waiting for the seeds to finish. It is the first plant ready. At just under 60 days from 12/12 this strain is pretty fast. With one brown seed then the others should be ready any day. It was pollinated only once. So they all should finish around the same time. Going to watch amber trichomes now. To many show up and I will take all the branches but the seeded one.

As of now the mother may have named the hybrid. It is way sour. My first thought was that it was a sour sumbitch
So SSB seems to be the perfect name LMAO. Never know what this will end up at tell I try it. I am extremely happy it came out with such a sour smell. I can find no Blueberry in this pheno.

As of right now I have 4 more plants that are within days of finishing. At least how they look that way now. Hairs are turning red on most plants while others of the same strain have only a few. This is just a pheno thing. I have noticed in lots of plants that the trichomes are maturing at the same rate even if the hairs are not.

I am sure they are all going to finish pretty much the same time so I have hell getting them trimmed LMAO.

SSB lmao thats a name for the ages brother! Atleast you name your hybrids in a way that can explain what the plant should be. Ive been seeing names that make absolutely no sense! I had a feeling you were going to have a extremely successful seed run!!
:welldone:

Naming strains is like naming pets. Sometimes you gotta let them name themselves LMAO. Yeah it looks like I am going to get a few seeds of each at least.
3 of the 4 plants that were pollinated have stayed great plants to the end. Really happy with my choices on the Headband and the Glueberry. Smell on both of them are through the roof. The Genius being Jack Herer genetics could go anywhere.

The Super Lemon Haze is not what I was hoping to find. That's all I know so far. There is not tons of Lemon smell but that doesn't mean it won't be good. As much as I like lemon sativas. I mostly like good weed so lemon is only a part of it. Won't know shit about this one tell I smoke it. Looks good so far anyway. Thinking haze may come through flavor wise. Not going to be lemon thats for sure LOL.

What's really funny is the amounts of lemon smell is the same between the SLH and The Tangilope. Just a hint of lemon in each. These both have a couple weeks so more smell may come in the end. 2 totally different looking plants of totally different genetics with exactly the same smell.

Of course now that the seeds will finish and be there. I am now questioning the male Jacks Cleaner 2. Was it as good as I thought it was? Even if it was, will it transfer anything special?

I have figured out 2 ways to check this. First is to grow out all the strains and look. The only way to truly know! Even then there will be good and bad phenos. The second way to check this I will not be able to do tell I flower the male again. First look showed what I was pretty sure was trichomes. Really hard to check though. There are not tons like on female plants. Mostly you notice the difference of none or a few. I know I was seeing shiny spots that were not on other males. At the time I had no way to be certain. Really hard to tell with a tiny scope like I have. I also didn't flower the male very long because I wanted to regenerate it.

Now that I can get pictures to do the looking for me. With zoom and the tripod I should be able to see what is there. Not only that but get a picture of it when I do. Now we get to see who pays attention. In a month or so when I flower the male again. If you see no close up pictures of it. Then I have nothing to brag about. Which will also mean that what I thought would be great hybrids may only be OK.

One thing that was on my side was I didn't have anyway to show people what I was seeing. You guys had to take my word for it. When I figured out I was going to be able to check the male this way. I wondered if I should bring it up. While you all know I would show it off it pictures came out in my favor. Big question? Would I admit it if the pictures proved me wrong LMAO. Well now you all know so you can ask. I may still not admit it if the plant doesn't look great I will know though LOL. If you remember then you can ask LMAO.

I agree. I know that kind of info with the Trailer Trash Betty and Tahoe. This one not so much. When I flower this male I will check it before using the pollen. If it is a resinous male then I use it again this run. If not I won't use it. What it adds is not as important as the fact that it doesn't subtract anything. It some cases the best male would be something that added nothing at all.

Now that my mad dash at genetics is over I plan to just work with only certain males and females. I have a lots of great regular strains. I will be looking through those for breeding males if they show up. Same as females I will be trying to find that one certain pheno. I know where I am going to find a indica male or mostly anyway. I really need to find a male sativa that I can breed with. I hope to find one in Cannalope Haze or Cinderella 99. Where a male shows up and what it throws is a toss up.

I like to grow to many strains to keep mothers of all the strains. Keeping a certain male is a different story. As Long as I can find a good one might as well see how long I can keep it alive. It is fairly easy to find a good male with TTB so I can find them from seed if need be. I know what it adds. I may end up with only it in the end but would love at least one more.

A lot of breeders like The White because the males tend to be neutral. Do 2-3 backcrosses and you pretty much have seeds that reproduce the original mother plant.

Originality is great. With my Headband and C-99 I would want it to be exactly like I want it. Same with Purple Betty they all have certain traits that I know, love, and use.

I will always love F-1 hybrids though. Individuality is where it is at. I like the fact that you get different phenos. Some like mom some like dad and a few mixed up stuff in the middle. I will never be able to grow without the intrigue of waiting to see what will happen. New flavors highs are a big part of the fun for me. I am finding that it is just as rare to find one that sucks as it is to find a great plant. Most end up in the middle somewhere. Most is very smokable weed.

I know there are more favorite strains out there. Fun part is all the good weed I get to smoke looking for great weed LMAO.

Yep. Kind of like finding a methanol plant in a purps hybrid. If I didn't already know it was there that would have been shocking. It has the most interesting smell for sure. Plant structure sucks it has way to much stretch and fluffy buds so it isn't a keeper. The best plant is a strawberry pheno. Nice smell tons of crystal and a nice compact frame with tight buds. I need to find a menthol that grows like it.

A nice brown seed showed up on the Headband plant. Still lots of time left for it to mature so I am positive this hybrid worked now.

I repotted one Headband clone yesterday and started spraying it. I can only hope it reverses fine. I have 2 really sour phenos. They are totally different so I am going to get a good sour mix. If the seeds come from this I should be set. I know the high comes with the smell so I will have it in there somewhere. The one I have double clones of has the best smell by far. I would rather it be the earlier flowering pheno but flower time is not my concern. As long as it isn't to long it is no big deal they finish when they finish. I don't know what this plant will transfer. I do know that it can't transfer what it doesn't have. Sour is here and that is at least half the battle.

What really sucks is I have no idea what my next set up will be like. How and when I can start growing out some of these hybrids I have no idea. I do know I can't wait to try them. At least once I can confirm the Jacks Cleaner 2 male is really what I thought it was. That is the key to most of them. Even if I don't find it has the amount of resin I thought it did. It might still be fine. If I can confirm it, that would just take things up a notch.

This last feminizing project is the one I need to work. Nice to have a few feminized beans to have to grow while you search through regular seeds. In the future I want to try and do all my feminizing projects from regular genetics. I don't know how much it matters. I do know I can feminize regular strains though. That way I know my projects will have a better chance of success. Most of my genetics are regular strains so I need to start going through them. I do know I will be growing year around so I will be able to regenerate clone or do whatever to keep the plants and strains I like. That is when I can really start to do special shit.

Going to be a lot different when I can cross the best pheno with the best pheno. It just takes a hell of a lot more looking for this to work.

I know I sure miss a couple of the plants I have found over time. That is what showed me just how rare the great ones are. Lots of strains have a good percentage of good pheno's. These can seem to be really good plants. Then you see that one that has everything the others did but twice the trichomes, smell, and flavor. A great pheno can show you just how mediocre your other weed is LOL.

My very first feminizing project. I lost both of these plants. The Headband I really should have selfed. I have yet to find one as good. The other I was trying to self then make a hybrid with the Headband. It was the incredibly frosty Jack the Ripper. I didn't flower the reversed female early enough that time or it probably would have. Damn the luck. Both plants looked like white strains they had so many trichomes.

These plants showed up in back to back grows. How lucky was that. I had to regenerate the Jack the Ripper to self it. Then I found the Headband in the next grow and cloned it.

In the grows since then I have had some great plants. Nothing that compares to those 2 though. In the future I want to be able to keep those phenos tell I have selfed crossed or what ever I decide. As long as they come from regular genetics I can keep females to reverse at a later time if needed. Or cross it with males of other strains if need be. As long as I have 1 great pheno then there is a chance to find the second to make a great hybrid with.

On the 21st it all started. The tent is on day 63 of flower. For the last week I have been saying one more day for a few plants. Then I realized that everything is getting really close. If I am going to get it all taken care of I need to start now. That one more day was yesterday.

The smallest Basic Skunk 19 x Cinderella 99 (referred to Basic 99 from here on out) was the first to go. Noticed a couple things while I was trimming it.

First holy crap! once you get down deep into these plants they are covered in frost. You can sure see the Hashplant influence from the Basic Skunk 19. You really don't notice how much resin they are putting out tell you get to the inner buds.

2nd thing we will have to wait and see. This is a feminized F-1 hybrid. It is going to have multiple phenos. This plant is by far the smallest of the 4. When you finally get to see what a plant is going to give you for all your hard work. It gets kind of scary. They never seem do what we hoped. Buds are not very big on this plant. Rock hard as of now so that helps. Will they hold any of that weight is the question.
I have seen rock hard buds go both ways. How much water is in them is what really matters. Rock hard buds can go 2 ways. While some will dry rock hard others will be a bit spongy after drying. All this has everything to do with production. If these turn spongy I won't be getting much. Hash Plant also has rock hard buds so there is hope.

The Glueberry and the Super Lemon Haze will be the plants trimmed today. The SLH almost snuck by. It can have phenos that finish late so I really wasn't watching this plant hard yet. First look all cloudy LOL. Perfect time to take it as I want to give the other basic 99 another day or 2. If I give everything one more day then everything is going to finish at the same time. THAT can not happen.

With the way things are finishing up and my back problems. I am going to need to start trimming now. Trimming kills my neck and back so I can only do so much so fast. I have even learned to take branches right off the plant as I trim. That way if things get bad what is left will be alright tell I can finish it. I hate trimming wilted branches. Pushing myself passed what is comfortable can cost me a few days.
No big deal I just have to do things right. That means from here on out next man out is what is closest that day. As the next day I could have 4 more finish LOL.

Everything is or will be in the harvest window when I get to them. I am pushing stuff a lot farther now than ever. I always prefer head high so I normally harvest on the early side. This grow I am pushing things much closer to amber. Whatever the effects, I want it to be as strong as possible. If I grow great sativas then they should stand on their own. I shouldn't need my strong indicas to have any heady effects like before. I can let everything get as strong as it wants to be.

Starting to see your evil side Pennywise. The fact that you want to see pictures of my dead and dying plants is disturbing LMAO.
Thanks for the reminder. I will try and remember to get some pics along the way. I bounce around modes when growing. Picture mode usually goes on standby while trimming mode is in effect. Then all I have left is sticks and starts LOL. (Oh yeah and jars and jars of weed for the coming year). Going to shoot for Nug of the month pics to now. Genius is not doing real well in P.O.T.M. I am going to take nug pictures and submit it till people like it as much as I do LMAO.

For now.
Glueberry :rip:
Super Lemon Haze :rip:
Basic 99, 1 :rip: 3 on death row.

When I said the Basic 99 was super frosty I had no idea it would be forgotten so easily. It made it 24 hrs is all. The Glueberry is as gooey as anything I have ever trimmed. Spent half my time cleaning scissors lol. Still looks like a terrible harvest. Dry weight is going to matter a lot. While there may be weight problem. There is not a crystal problem in any strain I have. Now that I am checking color you can really see how many trichomes it is packing on. Everything is just thick with them. Now that I am at day 65 from the switch to 12/12 I can harvest plants as fast as I can trim them. Nothing will be taken to early or late. At least I hope. To many plants finish to fast and I could still get behind.
Shoving plants in a dark room will help in some case's. If amber trichomes show up and you can't get to them to trim. Being in the dark slows them from degrading as fast. It can also help them cloud up.

Oh yeah. Ice fishing starts. You guys all have a great Christmas.

Congrats on the harvest!! Normally I would already have atleast a month of ice fishing in, but this year the lakes are still barely frozen. I cant wait to see some of your NOTM contestants!!!

Plenty ice here, gumption is the only problem here LOL. Caught some nice cutthroat trout so it was a good day. Jigging time is harder then trimming so I won't be doing anymore tell I can get these plants taken care of. The holidays are a tough time to be without a Therapist.

Sounds funnier than hell I know.Meant it to be. It is the Physical type so quit laughing so hard. My back spasms are not going away tell he gets back, damn the luck. 7 more days to wait and lots of trimming to do in that time. No ore Icefishing for me tell I recover LMAO.

Figured I would post a couple closeup pics of the Glueberry Og days away from harvest. I actually used these to double check it.

They might also explain why I spent half my time cleaning the damn scissors lol. This plant took gooey to a whole new level.

I am going to do a couple photo essays on plants as they go through the process of trimming. It is always interesting to see what happens as you take the leaves off.
