Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

The 5 sativa's are spreading there roots. I don't recommend using clear cups for starts. They were all I could get and have yet to use them. In time they will get stuff growing on the sides of the clear cups. should be a problem here as I don't plan on leaving them in the cups for long.
I know things happen fast with new sprouts. I was supprised yesterday to see roots all the way to the bottom and spread to the sides. That's a lot for just 2 or 3 days. Going like a weed LMAO.
All is out of the tent now so it is clean up time. Still have a lot to do in the next month or so to get everything ready for the Fall/Winter grow. Everything will be in tents this year.

Well well well. A package showed up today. Chocolate Mint Og and Cannalope Haze may have made the new line up. Everything revolves around what happens when I go to Colo. at the end of the month. I may just be growing all kick ass females. Blue Giloto and Franco's Lemon Cheese sound real good too. If I am not going to have to worry about quality genetics for a while. All my regular strains will be put away. I still have the likes of Lost Coast Hash Plant, Headband, Chem and a few really interesting diesels that came as freebies.
Can't forget to grow some stuff that is not super strong.

I must have something wrong up-stairs. No matter how hard I try to plan a total female grow I can't. Lots of ideas about what to grow. All my ideas still want to revolve around a regular strain. That's not a problem I have grown them for years. Its the fact that I can't just throw out the males. Maybe it is the creating thing. That won't work because half the time I am wanting to recreate a strain I liked. Its not price either as I find the seed prices acceptable. I guess it all revolves around the type of high. By now I know I only really like about 30% of the strains I grow. Most of it is still great weed just not right for me. What is great is that I can find what I want in all types. Sativa's Indica's and Hybrid's
Blueberry Headband is a example of what I want to do. I had planned to grow and cross Blueberry with the best Headband I had. Blueberry is about as stable as a hybrid gets. That would help in most situations. I don't need stable I am not trying to create a strain for sale just to grow. The hybrid I planned would not have been right anyway. I would have been making a Headband Blueberry. The male is always last. Ended up the Blueberry Headband I got has more of a Blueberry high then a Headband one. I may try the Emerald Triangle Blueberry Headband one someday.
With that all said. Headband Haze is also a favorite. Not sure what Haze they used in making it. It was the Headband high I liked anyway so it won't matter. The Cannalope Haze I just got will be perfect to use. Also a reason I bought it. It is a really mellow Haze with a great happy high. It will also come out right with the Haze as the male. I know what pheno of the Headband I want. I should have no problem finding one in a 5 pack. I had 2 last time. Second best was pretty damn good too. So I am sure I can get a plant with that Headband flavor and high. My choices at males isn't as good with the Cannalope. I have only grown feminized seeds of the Cannalope so far. With the Blueberry I would have had a better chance at the male being a good one because of stability. Cannalope may be fairly stable also I don't know, Chances it being as stable as the Blueberry are slim.
So my choice to go with. The Haze may be the wrong one. My choice LMAO. No better way to get a bunch of seeds then to cross a true male to a female. I may never get to grow the amount of plants I am right now so the time to breed is now. Now to decide if I use more then one male if I get them. I want to be able to find a great Headband Haze. If I use one male and choose wrong. I could be left with a bunch of seeds I may not really like. They are not going to suck but they may not be what I like. If there are 2 or more males and I grow and use all of them to pollinate the right Headband. Then what I want will be in there somewhere. Just lots more pheno's to choose from. Might be more then I want to go through.
The plan now is to grow all males out. Most likely I will only use the earliest male. Plant structure and internode spacing will be considered also. If I find all the right things in one male so be it. If not then I will have to make some decisions. As always if I am going to save a male I will want to have other strains that would work good in a hybrid.
I have strains for that also LMAO. The main reason I have Franco's Lemon Cheese as it is a hybrid of 2 of my favorite strains. Soooo why not make it 3 of my favorite strains and throw Cannalope at it. Could work who knows.
I still plan to work and make only feminized strains in thefuture. Headband Haze is one strain I can't "Not" do. So I will do it. Going to be really hard to find the right daytime sativa to go with these high powered hybrids. The Cannalope is great while it didn't put me to sleep it also didn't motivate me either. Something I like to see in my daytime sativa's.

Yep. Also thought of using different males for each hybrid. Got to see what I get first. At least I know I need a big enough space for more then one male. Got a great closet in the spare bedroom that works great for males in the fall/winter season. Plenty of room for them. This is the same room I will use for clones when I take cuts from the Headbands. The best one I will self. If I get the same 2 pheno's I liked last time I may cross them instead of selfing the best one we shall see. They both had the headband high and flavor. One had better flavor the other had tons more crystal. The frosty one is the main goal. As it is not only a great high it is stronger then the others.

Agreed Pennywise. This one does happen to be pretty strong LOL. So much difference in trichomes. Little tiny ones that look like dust others so big they look like sugar crystals.
It is surprising how "little" you can tell about a plant from the trichomes. You really can't even tell how the flavor will be. I have had plants with big huge trichomes that didn't carry much flavor. You would think huge ones would have more terepene's which would equate into better flavor. The most best tasting Haze I have ever grown had tiny little trichomes that carried tons of flavor and THC.
Don't even get me on the fact they are now hiding CBD in them trichomes LMAO. Don't get me wrong I like my CBDdurban just fine. They it is a 1 to 1 strain with 8 to 10% CBD/THC. My guess is that is exactly what I got. Yep all those trichomes look like 20% to me. 10% and 10% makes 20% LMAO.

Its been a little bit since most plants have been harvested from this last grow. I have had a chance to smoke most multiple times. You have all heard me rave on the Cinderella 99. It is living up to everything I thought it was.
Not so much with the Afgooey. My first impressions are all wrong. Or right they could be right at the same time. At first I thought this was going to be a major indica. First few smokes were in the evening and it did just what I thought it would. Got me ready for bed. Not that I needed another indica. Seems like I ended up with to many this time.
Couple days back on a bad back day I tried it early in the day. During the day it seemed much more elevating. I went from sitting on the couch to getting a few things done. To motivate me off my ass on a day I have already decided to do nothing says a lot. Not often do you find a strain that can do both equally well. Yes that is what hybrids are all about. The blending of 2 highs. While it sounds simple it rarely is. Most strains will lean to far one way or the other. No matter what their genetics say.
I now understand all the hype about Afgooey. Some people don't know but the "Clone Only" Afgooey was used in many hybrids just like you see coming from GSC and GG#4. At first I didn't see anything that special. It was only one plant which tells you nothing at all. But still my thoughts of what it should be limited it. Not giving me a full understanding of the high.

I do this with all my strains. It takes some time but I try them at all times of the day and night and all other situations. You can find out so much when you do this. I like to see if you can still feel the effects of a strain after I have smoked others. Lots of good strains can go unnoticed in the evening. Not all strains can power through and make themselves known. Once I have a better idea of what strains can do. I can regulate where I want them in the day. It is always a fun process. You can totally ruin a perfectly good day with the right strain LMAO. I have also had a Jack the Ripper that could motivate you even after indicas all day.

So the fact that Afgooey is so versatile. I have to look at it totally different then I did before. Ended up it grew well, produced well, smoked well at all times of the day. You just don't get that much these days. The main reason I grow so many strains is I like variety. Afgooey has variety bred in. If I could only grow one strain at a time this strain would be one of the ones I would choose. "That's about as good as a recommendation as I can give any strain". Still need to find out about tolerance. Something I shouldn't see with all the strains I smoke. It still does show up though. Some strains I am over after less then a ounce. Nothing worse then being left with a bunch of weed that don't get you baked anymore.

So if you are thinking about Afgooey or want a all around strain. As of now I highly recommend Afgooey.

Just thought I would mention. The 5 sativa's are alive and well. To soon to read much into them. But of course I will LMAO. Chocoloco seems to have a short pheno. If it continues that way it could be the pheno I look for in the future. Plenty more of these seeds. At some point in time I will be trying to find a great Chocolate Thai to work with.

Just so it is known. I dried the reversed Purple Betty standing then shook the plants over parchment paper. Then froze everything the way it was. So little pollen it is hard to spot. I kept everything and froze it immediately. Not the right way to harvest pollen but the only thing I could think of. Probably should have sifted it all but to late now.
It is a kick ass plant. I will be using it to try and pollinate the Chocoloco. I will have to do a branch from each plant. Just in case it works. I won't know anything about these plants. Hermies are a known Chocolate Thai trait. That is the reason for doing all the plants. You just never know if one will hermie and when. If I do them all I won't loose out if the chosen one hermies.
While Thai can hermie it is still one of the best sativa's out there. The Chocolate Thai being my favorite. The Purple Betty is completely stable so it should help stabilize any hybrid with Chocolate Thai. The seeds would be a feminized hybrid of Chocoloco x Purple Betty. Chocolate Purps? Come on you want to try it as much as I do LMAO.
Also Purple Betty is a full on indica. The only way to get any sativa in it is to go with a 70 to 100% sativa. The hybrid would End up in the 50/50 range which could really be interesting. Might be able to bring this one into the day light hours LOL.

Going to start the long process of figuring out the next grow. The trip to Colorado might change it some. Other then the Canalope Headband hybrid. The plan is to grow the best female seeds I have. Lots of great stuff to choose from so it could be anything. Problem is covering all my needs. I am going to have all this sativa coming so I might just grow hybrids and indicas. Could be a big mistake if they do not produce. Thinks go wrong I could end up on the couch tell spring LMAO.

Chocolate Mint Og
Acapulco Gold
Cannalope Haze
Headband
Franco's Lemon Cheese
Lost Coast Hash Plant
If I choose today those would be the winners. The day to decide is a month away so I am sure that will change.......

If I get more genetics from Brothers Grimm then I will need to adjust. I want to grow their stuff to be sure it is what I think it will be. It could be a risk smoking to many strains with the same genetics. I think with hybrids it will be fine. Need to know now so tolerance doesn't ruin all my genetics. Now I only grow a strain once a year so I don't get to used to it. It would suck to have tolerance show its ugly head. I could end up with half my crop not getting me high 2 months later. I smoke so many strains these days I don't know how much of a problem anymore. I do know it is a problem I have had thought.

I love like a variety too for the same reasons. Seems like smoking new cannabinoids now and then keeps things fresh. I've got 12 plants growing now, with 7 different strains. Lol

Fun to have choices also. There is a lot more to it then just tolerance. Love of growing and genetics are major factors too. I don't know if I will ever be able to not grow new genetics. So many new flavors and highs to try.
I like to grow 4 or 5 of each strain. That gives me plenty of each. Plus anytime you only have one plant of a strain it ends up being excellent and you want more. It gets funny when I mention the fact that I love to try freebies. I like to try 1 or 2 new singles every grow. So it happens a lot LMAO.
Black Dog
Lemon Amber Kush
Are the front runners this time. It could be anything at this point.

Cannalope Haze stood off a heavy battle in my brain. Beating out 2 other regular strains for its place in the new grow. More and more I am finding stronger is better. Thought if I am going with my strongest genetics. Maybe I should reconsider. I have some regular strains like White Lotus, Jesus Og and a few others that are going to have some incredibly strong. Thing is there might also be dud's. Industry breeders use Blueberry, White Widow and others because they want their strains to be as stable as possible. I just want strong as possible. Strong weed isn't everything but it is sure better then weak weed. Still the Cannalope won out. It's strong, I know I like it, It blends perfect with the Headband. It was one of DNA's first strains offered when they made the move to the UK. All the strains they started with were California mainstays.
Another reason they use stable or near stable genetics is because it is easier to find a male. In strains like Blueberry there is not many wrong choices. I had planned to use it for just that reason. Cannalope fits that same mold without the added indica. As old as Cannalope Haze is I am betting it is fairly stable so any male I get should work. Has too I have no choice LMAO. Acapulco Gold got the nod here because of the Cannalope also. Might as well throw another sativa in the mix. Good way to get a large supply of sativa seeds. Mexican weed has got folks wasted for generations and the right one's can be truly special.
I have a Oaxacan strain I am waiting to grow tell my brother retires. It showed up more then any other as special weed growing up. We had Panama Red and Thai Stick also but not as much. So the Oaxacan became a favorite of ours.

Looks like I lost my following LOL. Just me and Mi now LMAO. Could be the fact it has very little to do with actually growing half the time.
I remembered that my second grow of the winter needs to be considered when I plan the first. Might be a change or 2 so I can grow my strongest genetics and still have the variety I want.

Okay now that I have the riff raff run off lets talk growing. STRETCH is subject today. I found out a little known fact. Not sure how true it is but it came from the guy that has taught me most of what I know about growing. He grows the same strains over and over and has had time to work with may strains this way. We all know plants stretch when they are put into flower. It is suggested to grow marijuana plants at 20/4 or 18/6 so the plants have sleep time. Plants stretch and grow in these dark hours. Plants grown under 24 hours of light will not grow as tall as those that are grown with 20/4 or 18/6. From what I have been told is plants grown with 24 hours of light store some of that stretch. When they are put under 12/12 all that stretch comes back. Normally this would be a problem if you grew them to a usual height. With this Sativa grow that is not going to matter so I am going to go with it. All plants will be way short when they go into flower so they will have lots of room to stretch. I almost turned the lights back to 20/4 but didn't we shall see what happens.

Not sure if I will use this info in the future or how but it is nice to know. There are a few things that I have learned along the way that are not in my skill level. Something everyone needs to understand to do well. Stay within your limits. As you learn then you can improve. Marijuana is a weed and normally simple to grow. It is the growers that make it difficult most the time.

I have a Chernobyl that trippeled in height. I hate super cropping. So I just sent it over a bit and tilted one hood towards it a few degrees. Seems to be working fine. It looks like it will be sativa dom from the jack the ripper side. It's hard to know what to expect when it's first time growing it and I'm notorious for over vegging. Lol... I'm my own worst enemy most of the time. Next round of flower I want to build a portable scrog over a 5 gallon bucket. So I can spin it to inspect and prune. Definitely easier to grow indicas. Mine usually stay short and manageable

Nice. I have had plants that look like a upside down L by the time they are done. Hasn't hurt yet. Even if the main cola growth slows a healthy plant will put that bud somewhere LOL.

Still going to do some checking to see if I can find the region that Chocolate Thai is from. Colombian Gold is going to be real happy with the 12/12 light cycle. There is only 45 minutes or so difference between the longest day and the shortest day. Both hoovering around 12 hours. Probably another reason people started trying this technique. The Thai should be pretty close to the same. Not that it matters.

Not sure when everyone else went to 12/12. I am going to give it a couple more days before I trans plant they. I want them to have 1 week veg in the 3 gallon pots before 12/12. All with the 24 hours of daylight. Gonna seem me some stretch now LMAO. Not sure if the stretch thing is true or not. If anyone would knows this guy would. They will still be less then 12" when I go to flower so there shouldn't be a problem even with extra stretch. If so lots of room to go with it with only 5 plants in a 4 x 4 tent.

I really haven't said much about the Blueberry Headband. It seems it is better then I had originally thought. When smoking nothing but it. It kicks your ass. Smoke it late in the day you don't notice it as much. The Blueberry shines through more with both plants. The Headband effect is not as strong in this hybrid. The fact that I try my weed at different times helped me find this out. Not very many days start out with a indica lol. When one finally did show up. I found out what Blueberry Headband can really do.

Had to cull a plant today that was throwing nanners like crazy. Sucks I had high hopes for that one. But it just seemed to struggle the whole time. Was a "grease monkey" from exotic genetics. I have a clone of it I'll have to get rid of too probably. Down to 5 in flower. All look really good. Hopefully it stays that way. Lol. Gotta decide if I'm going to pop some more beans or wait. Got 5 in veg. One is a grape Krush throwback from DJ short. It's not taking off too good either. Got a feeling it's going to be a dud. So legally I have 2 open spots. Total legal count is 12 here. I have some of DJ's blueberry regs, have tried 3 so far, all males. Got some 818 headband thinking about. Decisions...lol
