Let's grow some Weed!

The RapidRooters are a very spongy medium with an opening 1/4" deep and wide, and you can't squish the medium closed over the seed. The smooth sides of the hole doesn't give the seed husk/skin anything rough to catch on to when the seedling emerges.

BIG HINT: when putting a seed that has just popped a rootling into a grow plug, put the pointy side of the seed DOWN into the hole and the root pointing UP.
I know, counterintuitive.
However, the root will turn and go down, and the seedling will pull up out of the open seed, hoping that the soil will catch hold of the seed while the seedling pulls out, and turns up to the light.

Thanks for the Great hint!!!! So far I have only used Rapid Rooters for cloning. Sometime in the near future I do plan on using them with seedlings.

High Joe.

I've always had great luck using these 9 hole units with seeds or clones.
I just use Pro-Mix with 20-25% perlite that I crush up fairly fine and take out any lumps.

They make great plugs for DWC or transplant to soil and are reusable. They usually
come in a tray with a clear lid that's too short for clones but taller ones can be got
that fit the tray. 6 or 7 bucks + 5 for a dome lid. Instant clone station. They're made
out of flimsy plastic and you just pop them out from the bottom.

I've tried the peat plugs and some other things but haven't used anything but these for years.
I tried rock wool once and I think I've still got about 50 left somewhere.
If I find them I'll use them for insulating the dog house. LOL My mom grew up on a farm in
the great depression and still never buys anything that she can make herself. A lot of that rubbed off on me too I guess.

What i did do to cover up the seeds was to pull off some of the spongy stuff and fill up the hole over the seed. Then i kept pulling it out to see if the sprout was trapped under it or not! LOL!

what i wanna know is, do you clean off the soil or leave it in... i use rockwool everytime and i use it so there is no chance of soil getting in my res...

do you have this problem or do you have solution?

I knock off most loose dirt first and spray the plug before putting it in a net pot. I have the lid over an empty tub and pour a cup of water through the net pots to wash off most loose dirt and to keep the root ball wet. Once all the holes are loaded I then put the lid full of pots on the tub with the nutes. There usually ends up being a tablespoon or so in the bottom of the tub but it's never been a problem. It might be a problem with a pond pump in there for feeder lines but I don't use that, so no problem. It's Pro-Mix so it's not really dirt tho I doubt it would make a difference. If a plant dies or I have to cull a male I leave the old roots in there too if they're all tangled up with the rest. I know you're not supposed to do that but I do and have never had a problem with that either. The old roots look fine and come out when I crop and dump the tub. I had old roots in there through 3 regenerations and nothing bad happened. Probably because I use peroxide every week so they don't rot and infect the good roots.

Long winded a bit but that's just me. :0)

you got it under control... yah people, including myself, can get really paranoid about non sense like a little dirt but yah i haven't seen that before.. good job

I only use Fox Farms nutes anymore..
The Miracle grow caused nutrient burns (Yellowing at the edge of the tips) with my plants.
My plants are much healthier since I made the switch.
