InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

What's today...oh yeah it's Wednesday and it's time for the first update of the new year!

It's been cold at night with lows around 40ºF in the bike shed, but with the radiant dish heater on between low and medium all night in the shed I've managed to keep it in the high 50s to low 60s. Not ideal but short of rebuilding the shed as an insulated heated growing space, it's going to have to do. Even my house was 59º when I got up this morning! No, we don't turn the heat on at night.

I thought I would start with a couple of pics of the annual new year's day hike that we take with another family. Sometimes I go and sometimes it's too steep for me, but this time I made it :). Great views from up there, and you could see all the way from Burbank and downtown to Santa Monica and the ocean.

Not too many plant pics this morning as it was hard to get moving after four days off, but here is what the shed looks like these days:

Is it too soon to know if the FIM was successful? It looks to me like I need to go back and top it but I'm open to what the experts have to say:

One last thing...@moderngroroom had asked about the x10 indication on the TDS meter. I said I would put it in the calibration solution and see what happened.

It was spot on, with a reading of 100 x10:

So I turned it up a little, and it went to 101 x10, which would be 1,010:

I hope that clarifies things. On with the day!
:surf:
Great start to the year Shed and all the girls are looking fantastic!

Oh one last thing...you may remember this post from back in May:

Well I've been watering it and waiting for it to do something beside look yellow and not die. It finally decided it was alive!

Woooh! New lemons on route haha! That new light looks to be kicking some serious butt! Seems like all the girls are loving it

Would it be worth it as opposed to running the heater?
If you ran a 1000W the temps would be good at lights on but still drop low at lights out no? Maybe the little heater is your best bet!
With no insulation, the shed doesn't keep much heat in, though I only need to keep it about 15º over ambient. Can I get an HPS system for the price of a heater?
Well I run Ceramic Metal Halide which gives off heat too, but when lights are off, I have to use a heater(small 1500w) 360 controlled by an INK BIRD. For me, no getting away from using a heater.
At this point I don't need a lights-off period in there really. The only thing flowering is the BT auto 2. Lights are off now from 5-9pm but the plants are in there from 4pm to 8:30am so that's 4 off and 12.5 on. Since I've been turning the heater for the hot tub down to 98º at night to leave headroom for the shed heater, I wonder if I'm better off using lights only to heat the shed as Wally suggested instead of efficient LEDs and a heater.

When I flower the photos I could run the heater only from 8pm to 8am. Maybe the nighttime temps will warm up a bit and make the whole thing moot!

"VIVISUN Hydro 600Watt Vented Hood with Glass. Adjustable balast 250w/450w/600w. HPS and MH bulb included.
like new condition. I purchased new April 2017. Receipt included. Works perfectly. Used for 1 grow cycle - $75"

I'm guessing I would still need to buy a vent for the housing as well. But if I buy a $40 heater at least I can use it in the house. My grow gets more and more confusing as I go. And expensive of course.

You would need a duct work and an in-line fan for that! I think the 40$ heater is your best option and like you said you can bring it inside as well!

This is what I run.

Is it possible to grab a sheet of "foam board" insulation, cut it up to box in the grow area? They're about $14 at the Depot....
:hmmmm:

I saw those when I was there but didn't have the van. I was going to use that for just the floor, because if I build a box then I am completely blocked from getting to the back 10 feet of the shed! I can barely squeeze down that side as it is o_O.

I'm kinda leaning that way too!

With an in-line fan though, right? Otherwise the bulb gets too hot I would imagine. Mo' money there and I just spent it on the strips! I should just go to homedepot.com and stop worrying about this right?
Nah... no fan on mine. I have the same fixture with the cheaper hood. It's just a straight wing.
I handle that reflective wing and the ceramic portion of that light fixture quite often with bare hands. It's hot, but not enough to burn on the touch. My oscillating fan breezes across the fixtures, and I've had no issues at all.

I completely understand not wanting to buy another fixture. LoL
I'm thinking the same as summer approaches. Do I change lights, or upgrade HVAC?:hmmmm:

I'll figure it out when I get the next "wild hair on my ass". LoL

Pics or it didn't happen?

Are your two lights the only thing heating your shed when it's freezing outside?
I've got a weird balance... I used to run them at night when the shed was cool, then adjust my a/c to kick on in the morning when the room would start warming up again.
Well... these HPS rays make my shed look like swiss cheese in the dark of the night.
Now they run from 6 am- 6pm, with the a/c set on the same timer. I have a small space heater on an opposing timer to run it at night if temps dip.

It was miserable trying to find balance at first. Now, we're just leaving it TF alone until harvest. LoL

I'll grab pics in a sec...

Oh thanks! Open hoods wouldn't need an inline fan. I'm surprised you can touch that base though after 11 hours. Probably wouldn't raise the temps in the shed 15º over ambient then. That helps make my decision for me. :thanks: P!
I can swing my temps +/- 10 degrees, just by switching power levels on the ballasts.
After this run, I'll be dealing all light leaks and go back to running them at night through the summer... unless I build a QB. LoL
