Autos v. Photos - A 5x5 No Rules Fight for Yield: A Jon & NickHardy Gig

Yeah me too buddy. Lets have the love, buds and friendship shine through from here on out.

The knowledge sharing might get lost otherwise and that’s really why we are doing this.

❤️

Anyone wondering - we really are mates. That stuff was just for fun!
Idk what this asshole is talking about.

The trouser rental was in Malaysia. No criticism of my hosts here in Thailand should be inferred.

Skywalker Auto Unnecessary Backup Girl

I moved her down to the floor. I can now run the 420h at full power with the desired light field. Auto growers: you ever notice that autos never really seem to stop growing vertically? I had this girl at 1150 ppfd when I thought she was done stretching. She is…but she isn’t. They never really stop, like photos do, when they get to a certain point. The stretch ends, and they definitely slow down like normal, but it seems in my experience that they continue to inch their way upwards the whole grow. So my 1150 became 1270. And although I know the Skywalker can easily handle that, I wanted a little less for this one. Thus, the floor it is.

I'm just thinking if that's a rental then wave the deposit goodbye! I've just stopped noticing the smell but an agent came round the other day to value our house and said - that's assuming you have the whole house repainted when you stop growing then put it on the market....

😅 😅

I'm going to have to do some reading on the evolutionary link here, because this raises the question of how exactly myco could evolve to take advantage of the exudates if they weren't there to begin with, and if they cost so much for the plant to produce, why were they there if the plant wasn't putting them out there for another purpose?

Ok so I dug a little further and found some interesting stuff.

Fungi are organisms that some times resemble plants, sometimes animals, and sometimes look uniquely fungal. They are eukaryotic organisms, the same as plants and animals. Following this eukaryotic history, it is believed that plants, animals, and fungi all share a common ancestor. This to me is just more proof that these evolutions took place to help maintain balance in the planet, and amongst each other. I won’t get into why we’ve lost the path.

So, with that established, we also know that mycorrhizal fungi specifically have existed and supported plants since terrestrial plants evolved more than 450 million years ago. These associations it is believed are a major factor in why plants were able to survive on land. The earliest fossil records of plant roots contain AMF (Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi) that look almost identical to the AMF we see in modern soils. This to me implies that it was the plants that evolved due to the fungi in the first place, not the other way around. Or perhaps we all evolved together to fill each others weaknesses. Fungi’s major one being a lack of chloroplasts.

If it weren’t for myco we may have never even be able to exist, let alone had cannabis to cultivate.

This info was in Teaming With Fungi. I’ve found a couple other myco books I’m in the process of reading but it seems like, in order to understand the evolutionary links, we’ll need to go back to the very beginning.

Amazing. Thanks @Keffka!

So don’t hate me guys, but the winter weather down here is such that at this point, unless it rains, (rarely does), I am running the grow fully ambient with AC. Wasteful, I know. But that’s what works with this grow and the weather given the single garage location of my tent. There are no bugs this time of year, my traps look brand new still.

The tent I’m using is my first GGT and my oldest. I’ve gotten almost four years from her. She is missing a zipper pull, has numerous light leaks, and the tent as a whole is basically impossible to grow photos in. I have plenty of new ones for them. It still works fine for autos though. So this tent is my dedicated auto tent until it falls apart. Could also double as a mother plant tent. When I get to PA and have all 7 tents set up it might be time to talk mother plants. If I can only find the perfect strain I love so much I can’t live without. Lmao.

Here’s what passes for an ambient grow in Jonland. The light coming from the opening is due to the garage door being open about halfway. I can change the temperature and rh just by the degree to which I open the main garage door. It’s awesome, I must admit.

@NickHardy - I was just kidding my man, had not yet seen your DM when I posted this. Lol! I’m with you. We can shelve the shit talk til the end. All it is is a distraction at this point. There’s too much cool other stuff going on. I’m still gonna beat you, but I’ll just let my grow do the shit talking for me. Heh.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the shit talking. Sounded like fun at the beginning but I've grown weary of it. There's too much negativity in the world right now and I don't need any more in my life. I know it was all in good fun, but I'm happy you guys are going to change the tone.

You both have mad skills, that's for sure. It's a pleasure to watch your grows develop.

Personally, I'm rooting for a tie! :green_heart:

Its game time buddy. This is when the magic happens.

What ai’m doing now is all about “The Chunkening”

3-4 weeks time its gonna happen for me.
I understand. I’ve also been heavily engaged in the chunkening. Some of my girls just want to keep making flarf and I just keep picking it off. I’ve done all 9 undercarriages as much as I want to, and you can see all the way through under the canopy, it’s awesome. All mine are showing budlets or almost except for the Trizkit and the Apple Fritter. Yeah, in 3-4 weeks both tents should have a decent show going on.

The Auto Jungle
Day 44

Looks like the show is about to begin. I’ve set these girls and this canopy up about as well as I am capable. They’re all rip roaring as we head into flower and I don’t have the slightest blemish or burnt tip or any end curls or taco-ing or anything that looks remotely like a problem. Don’t ask me how that’s possible, I can’t do that. Not on 9 plants and seven strains and three grow mediums and three nute systems. Yet here we are. My only conclusion is that Jah himself is looking over me on this grow.

Here’s front side, back side, and a closeup on the Bruce Banner #3.

Wise person is my friend @Azimuth

Yeah - to the uniformed, like near everyone because I invented the phrase I think?

“The Chunkening™ by Nick Hardy” (I have now invented it!)

Is this what Jon suggests. Its when your plants all bud up, right? Sorta.

They chunk up. Not the truffle shuffle

Its the real second layer of buds on buds

Jon you get I mean?

Sure they’ll all bud up, some skinnier than others. Purer sativas are gonna tend to skinny airy types even as the take their own sweet time over it!! Probably why Kali Mist is referred to as “The Queen of Sativas!”!

I am trying to encourage the plants to the chunkening with defoliation timing which is a bit exaggerated with us

We grow way higher plant density than most, no smack talk but I know what you think you might estimate yield by knocking off 20% off the plant average yield what you got with 4 of them in the tent and multiplying by 9! I know better than most because I do it most grows but I’m multiplying by 18 🤣 I’m always wrong!

So we defol lots because mad powerful lights uptop to get that light way down low. But go too late post flip you’ll miss the “add add add” value - The Chunkening because yes fans are over rated but they are there for a reason. So its a lot of focus and stupid as it sounds

You gotta “read” the plants

It’ll sound like BS but I try and think like a plant

What does the side of a mountain in the Hindu Kush feel like? For example.

Anyway some science, geography and hocuspocus!

Best I got today!

Nick

Here’s an undercarriage picture. Note the light on the underside of the canopy. I added no light or shadow edit to this picture, just clarity and definition in the editing. That’s the amount of light that gets through. I know penetration. My light has it in spades.

Ha. Well, in terms of philosophy, I agree. It does have a lot to do with defol and timing. However, you and I differ on the value of fan leaves. I’d go so far as to say in that regard I vehemently disagree. Fans = bulk and fans = density. Fans are the engines for the plants. And there comes a point when you get no more new ones. It’s all too easy to take too many fans before that point and then at the end your buds look good, but you wonder why they didn’t get denser. This is my experience. Ever since I started keeping as many fans as humanly possible, the quality of my buds has gone way up on every level. And for organics I might argue it’s even more important. Regardless of how you grow, in my opinion the best thing to do with fans is keep them all. Take only what’s necessary. Tuck and skirt them before you chop them. You speak of reading the plants and I agree. As I read the plants, I hear them say leave my leaves alone, I’ll tell you when I’m done with them. And they do indeed do exactly that. If it’s green it’s serene. I want as much power as possible, especially for the stretch and the three to four weeks of stacking and building. That, imo, is when the plant works its very hardest. I want every engine engaged.

Now this is my kind of discussion Nick. Part growing, part philosophical.

I note the fan (electric!) position too.

We all mostly have above but you’re gonna put 4 in a tent like I see people do I’d recommend 2 up top and two down below on opposing diagonal corners.

Better value - and Jon like me grows in tropical/sub tropical ambient conditions - that’s a multiplier on pest and fungal infections.

- didn’t think ai’d miss that, eh buddy?!
