1st Time Grower Box Build - 1st Clones And New Grow - Maui Wowie - GDP - LA Kush

I've never done a scrog so not sure on when to flip. I think I've read flip at around 80% full but not sure. I think your Maui is going to stretch way more than the other two something to consider.

I think this will be the second maybe third time the SOD will be in Seattle, I don't recall reading anything bad about it last year.

I might go check it out. Even if it sucks (which is probably won't) and even if I don't decide to stay for the full 3 days. My money will still have been well spent ..... since it's going to autism.

Wiz, is the white build up on your rooters from the rooting powder??

Never done a scrog myself..just hitched a ride with mutt n whiz to learn a thing or two..
Been in da grow sixteen years but,i still consider myself a student of da game.

Hey mutt, that class can't a bad thing either which way u walk out a champ..

Knowledge is power..

I agree ...... I'm going over to Seattle on Wednesday to pick up a ticket. It's only 75 bucks.

Umm, If your refering to a comment or a post I made I think that was some type of fungus building up. White foggy looking stuff. It was from alot of excess moister on the bottom of the plugs and Im also using my heating mat. So thats what it was from. But if you saw a picture on my journal with powder on the top of the rooters then yea thats from the cloning powder.

Are you having some problems on the rooters? Upload a pic

Nope .... no problems. Just trying to figure out what the white stuff was ..... on your's

Actaully,

I decided to buy some cat litter boxes (at Wiz's suggestion) and then I found some conduite connectors and used them as a drain. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the pan and attached the drain fitting and attached a 1/2 inch rubber hose. The hose goes through the bottom of the box and then lays in front of the box. When I water, the excess drains out of the pan and then onto the floor. It runs straight down the floor drain. So, I don't have any issues with humidity.

So all I have to do is water. The rest takes care of it's self. Originally, I would water and let the run off collect in saucers. But, it becamse so much of a pain in the ass to get the excess water out of there. I had to come up with some way for it do drain. I was going to just put a large hydro bottom tray in there. But, they cost like 100 bucks at my local hydro shop. I wasn't going to pay that much to just make some water drain out.

You can see the drain fittings in this pic ........

Here are the drain hoses sticking through the front of the box ...........

I decided to go this route because I would never be able to get in there to take care of the run off after these things have been flipped to flower and got bigger and more tangled up in the scrog screen. I also would not be able to move the plants or pots once that happened. So, this fixed it for me. I can add or subtract the litter boxes depending on how many plants I have in there. If I happen to grow more than 6 plants, I'm going to have to use a different smaller drain pan .... to allow for more plants.

Right on..nice n slick..

0k,that leads me to next question..

I would also imagine that eventually your screen will fill up..
So,how are u goin to effectively get water to them?

I water under the screen. I use gallon jugs .... I mix my nutes in the jugs. Then, when it's time to water each plant gets a gallon. About ten percent runs off. The screen is right at about 10 inches from the top of the pots. That gives me just enough room to water. I am also getting ready to defoliate under the screen. Once I flip them to 12/12, there is going to be little chance of the lower branches under the screen of getting any useful light. So, I think the lower growth will just be a drain on the plants resources. So, by getting rid of the lower growth, it should send more nutes up to the higher branches. This should also keep the area clear to allow me to water.

But, gallon jugs aren't the best thing to water with. The water comes out in a solid stream .... which I don't like. And, it tends to push the soil around when I'm watering. Then, i have to push soil back where it belongs. I intend to fix this issue. I bought a watering wand with a sprinkler head. I attempted to build a watering container like the one in this video. But, I used an old pump that wasn't up to the task. It just wouldn't pump enough and clogged as soon as I added nutes. Eventaully, once I buy a decent pump, I will have something similar to this. Which will make watering much less of a chore. There is no faucet in my grow area. That is why i'd need something like this.

When should I flip em????

I keep looking at them and keep asking myself. Should I flip em?? I want to veg more, but I'm dying to flip them. The Maui has filled about 75% of the Screen. What would you guys do??

Nice and healthy green, looks like they know they are loved!

That Maui has been really vivacious, hopefully it doesnt crowd the GDP too much.

I was reading you werent in a hurry to flower because you had meds. My first thought was if you switched soon, you could let it cure extra long so its super dank and you could let that GDP amber up nice so its a KO for bedtime. It would break up harvest too. but that just my thoughts :smokin:

Now that's an idea that's gonna get some serious thought. I'm actaully thinking of flipping them on Friday. The Maui has gotten silly crazy with growth in the last 24 hours. When I went down today, I had to do some serious man handling to get her into a better position. I actaully accidently broke the tallest growth off the main stem. I was horrified. But, promptly stuck it into a rapid rooter. This Maui is close to outta room in the back.

The GDP and LA Kush are really starting to catch up now. They are filling in thier screen and the smaller lower branches are really close to the screen now. I may get more colas from them than I originally expected.

So, as I was getting ready to water them. I looked underneath and realized I need to defoliate a little bit. Just to make sure they area under there is clear. So, I started snipping the large fan leaves (under the screen) and some of the hopeless branches and were sagging or just never gonna get enough light.

It didn't take much. I could have stripped much more. But, there is still some room left for more growth on the GDP and LA Kush. So, I left some growth under those two. Here's how it looks now. Much better. Much more room to work and I'm sure the nutes I just gave will all go farther up the plant now.

I ordered my BPN so it's on it's way. Hope to start the BPN nutes right about the same time I flip these to 12/12. I did start adding molassess to my water. I also have double the dose of kelp/fish/guano poop mixed in with the water. The girls seems to love the added nutes ...... which is why the Maui has exploded with more growth. I should have used better nutes from day 1. But, at that time I was throwing my money at lights, ballast, box, fan, filter ... etc. And after looking around at our local hydro shop (expensive) I figured I could get by on what I have.

If you haven't read it already, you might find this thread about defoliation interesting.

If I understand it right, as it applies to you, you should hold off defoliating until after the flip as doing it before will slow your growth down. When you're ready to slow the stretch, or when they naturally come to the end of their stretch, then you treat the ladies to a heavy defoliation. If your Wowie is getting a little out of hand you could give her the treatment and then do the other two some days later. An approach like that might help keep the Wowie from crowding out the others. Just my $0.02

Looking absolutely great!

Thanks ..... I've read that thread. Good info there.

I'm not going to go any further with the defoliation. I just wanted to clear out the area under the screen. As these plants grow further, there will be less and less light under the screen. So no need for anything to be growing under there. I don't plan to defoliate the upper branches. I'm pretty much just gonna let them do thier thing. I basically just neeed to clear out some growth to allow me to continue to have space to function under the screen.

I can live with that ........... :thumb:

Well, I took about 15 clones from them when I trimmed them up. So my rapid rooter thingie is quite full. If I can get half of them to root I will be happy. There are a couple of the older clones that are showing little white bumps. So, they might just root. There is still only one in the bubble cloner that has roots .... and they are like 4-5 inches long now. Mini Me is still alive. It's having a rough time. But there is some new growth on it. I think it will make it. Most of those older clones are now starting to look really sad. Some of the stems are getting a little brown. Not sure how long they'll last.
