Yankeetoker's 2nd Grow Attempt - 2016 - All Advice Welcome!

I know it is so hard to not fuss over your babies but I promise if you will try and just let them get their legs under them they will tell you when they need something... I use the K.I.S.S system and it is so hard especially on your first few grows... I may be totally wrong with my thinking and the folks that have been helping you may think differently but IMO you should just let them grow for a bit....:circle-of-love:

[QUOTE.=ShiggityFlip;2814984]If the new soil has ferts in it I wouldn't add anything. It takes time for roots to recover from issues. They should start greening up.[/QUOTE]

Ok, cool. Just figured a shot of nitrogen might help. ...will leave them alone.

I think it's more likely that there's N there, but your plant is unable to use it at the moment. If you add Nitrogen the plant still won't be able to use it immediately and when it recovers and is able to, there'll be too much.

Just a few pics of the girls when I peeked in on them this evening....

Hope still adjusting to new soil, but still hanging in there.

Bernie starting to green up a bit......

Lexi looking the best of the bunch....seems to be greening up a bit and growing a wee bit...

Haven't watered or anything, just go in twice a day and turn pots under the lights.

Everyone has different ideas on watering here but IMO it is just best to top water until you have run off... You can check your pH run off this way too... I have tried to wrap my head around the benefits of soaking the pot and letting it soak up water from the bottom and top watering too and I just can't see any benefit to it... That is not to say that there isn't one... I just can figure it out.... If you simply water from the top with a slow steady stream as not to put dents in the top of your soil and let it soak in and go all around the pot where it gets everything good and wet... You will be fine....:circle-of-love:

And I'm going to give a different answer based on a different idea.

In this case, the nutrients are in the soil.
If water runs out the bottom, water is flowing out of the soil and nutrients are leaving the soil.
If water is soaking up into the soil, water is flowing into the soil and nutrients stay in the soil.

When your plants are drinking liquid fertlizers, water flowing out the bottom is good because it flushes out excess nutrients, salts and residues.

When your plants are drinking water, water flowing out the bottom is bad because it flushes out needed nutrients and there are no harmful salts and residues.

I vote for mostening the surface of the soil followed by bottom watering.

That said, the difference is subtle. Wet/dry cycles are more important.

As I said we all do it differently and I find the way described works well for me but in no way does that mean it is the best way for you.... I don't water so heavily that I have mass amounts of water running out the bottom.... I water as slowly as possible until it starts to drip out of the bottom.... If I plan on checking pH... I let a bit more run out... But again.... Try them both or whichever you are most comfortable with... I like top watering but Rad most certainly knows what he is talking about... I think it is just a matter of preference....:circle-of-love:

YankeeToker,

Have you thought about what you will use for LST'ing when the time comes?
Have you got pipe cleaners lying around? Those are pretty common to use for it, but there are lots of different ways to do it. Just wondering if you had something in mind.

Canna...

I have pipe cleaners, binder clips (for attaching to smart pots), and some of the soft ties (for when plants get larger). I actually saw a guy start LST on his plants using scotch tape...lol

Since I have the time, I will do a bit more research.

I used swick containers for my first grow attempt, but have been top watering and soaking this time to address pH issues. I would like to go back to swick containers because it took the guess work out for me....but I also feel a bit more comfortable with assessing when plants need water now.

Think I will soak/top water one more time with pH adjusted water then switch back over to swick containers after they dry out.

I use plastic coated wire coat hangers that push into the soil to start training the branches around where I want them once they are long enough to do it. Then the pipe cleaners and clips come into use once the branches reach the edges of the pots. I think this picture will show you what I mean. I use them to pull big fan leaves out of the way too, then I don't have to snip them off because they are blocking bud sites, and the plant can still use them.

Just another option to ponder on.

Looks good....I think I could do the same thing using the soft wire ties....also, I had hydroton on my soil surface, but removed when I transplanted. Do you find that the hydroton keeps the moisture in?
