Xlr8's Quest For The Best - 2012

Thanks X!
It seems Airpots are a little hard to come by in these parts.
But I think I've decided on these Hercules pots my shop has. Almost the same thing as the airpot..
gunna go with 4- 35L pots with a 50-50 mix of CoCo and promix. (plus some vermiculite). I'm going to put a layer of Hydroton on the bottom and the top of all the pots to aid with drainage. After talking with OMM, seems 4 would fit nicely in my 5x5 tent. Then scrogg it to the max! He said he was about to try the same thing! Going to keep a OG mother in one of those pots too..
Off today to buy Coco, soil, hydroton, pots, cal mag, hydrozyme, and maybe a new hood!
So this will be my last grow with soil, then I'm going DWC next!!! Can't wait

That does sound like a good idea - scrogged out like that. I do the layer of hydroton in the bottom/top too. On top, it should help discourage bugs and help the top from drying out as fast. They also help keep "dents" from forming in the top of the media when you water.

an alternative to a air pot is in GiGabnes journal. LOL but it is realy a pretty good diy way to go.
I have no clue how to link so if you look you will find it. good stuff:)

Thanks fish,
I'll check it out..

Yeah - Gigabane that was a pretty good, creative idea brother! For those who haven't seen his Giga-pots, they are those mesh containers like they use for wastebaskets, etc. Pretty nice idea for a DIY aeration pot. :thumb:

sigh. wont let me rep you.

good stuff mate.

heah mine is still making white pistils and is at least 2/3 white, even the orange ones still look fairly fresh...i only have my eyes to loock at trichs atm, but they look completly clear.

i just dont know how long i may have to wait. most of the flowering was done with a mere 180w of flouros and only hps for a week now.

my dilema is more about whether i should wait to start my hydroganics or go 2 grows at once which will be a pita tbh, but will speed up my life success, lol

Thanks Gig, appreciate the thought brother!
:high-five:

I'm not sure if you can ever really tell if they are milky/cloudy with the naked eye... you might be better off using some of the other clues I mentioned, combined with the breeders recommendation, etc. I've tried to see if I can tell before, and I can't reliably (but your eyesight might be better. Sometimes, I can see when they are amber if the light is right and I'm not too medicated when I'm doing the looking, haha! :)

Good luck with your hydrorganics - I really admire your willingness to experiment and pave your own path, try new things, so to speak. :thumb:

lol appologies i seem to have missed a few posts while typing my last couple...smoking a tiny sample of my auto...guess its working

No worries at all Gig, seemed like all good stuff to me. :)

Xlr8 I have noticed the same thing with the layer of hydroton on top, the coco seems to stay moist about twice as long in my little 4" pots.

Yes! It helps quite a bit, and allows roots to grow closer to the top, utilizing more of the pot. OMM was where I learned this from I believe... Great little trick. Thanks for sharing your insight on it, too. :thumb:

yes its very good. non absorbants like gravel work a treat too.
i believe it helps 'top rooting' in part because of etiolation. pretty much any part of our plant thats kept in the dark thinks about making roots.

that could be VERY usefull for people that got too much stretch in a young plant, could just wrap the stalk in opaque but breathable tape a week before repotting, then repot that part of the stem and have a double root system.

thanks brother. i love being a pathfinder. some people collect medals, but if i come up with an idea that changes someones life for the better, no matter how small...they are my 'retirement fund' so i can grow old with warm fuzzy feelings, lol.

That's awesome Gig! I like how you think. I feel the same way about things and life in general. :bravo:

Hahahahaha!!
That's right, I totally remember seeing those pots in your journal Gigs!!
Great DIY bro!
Just hope you don't water yours without a drip tray beside that powerbar lol.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAPPPP!!!!!!

About the upward rooting.
I noticed on my current grow they were doing that. cresting the top and crawling around. (Root bound).
But I was too far along to transplant them. would have been to stressful for them, so I just mixed up 70% vermiculite and 30% soil and covered the top.
They are only in 3 gallon pots, which I know now, are too small for these ladies.

That's why next grow, they're going into BIG daddyo's!!

i have this idea about topping a plant at the first node with a bit of stretch like this (left one).

Then topping up the soil so that it covers the first few inches of each of the two main stalks....letting them get some roots then splitting them into two seperate plants....might be a good little grow system as part of a perpetual design, top and split, one gets topped ad infinitum the other gets flowered e.t.c

Took pics tonight - will get them uploaded and posted tomorrow. Some of the buds on the Deadhead Ripper don't contrast well against the reflective inner tent material as they are both so sparkly - true story! Wowzer she has really been pumping out the resin. :yahoo:

Hello my lovely friend Xlr8 :ciao:

I am definitely looking forward to seeing these my darling, I am always so in awe of your plants :adore:

Big fluffy hugs and lots of love

One thing you'll notice about an "Air-pot" style pot (I'm guessing the same will apply with your Hercules pots) is that they don't require as large of pots because the aeration to the root zone forces more lateral root development. Instead of them circling endlessly looking for somewhere to go, the tips die-back from the air, and lateral root branching occurs. So, the end result is an incredible network of lateral rooting that makes tons better use of the pot they are in. You'd be amazed at how much smaller of a pot you can use with aeration containers like this (I was). Pretty cool stuff!

That's a crazy idea!
like seperating simese twins

Now that's an interesting crazy-cool unique idea. This is what I like about you Gig - your ceaseless creative thinking. I must confess, I have no idea whether that would work or how well. I've done similar things with garden plants that worked, so perhaps it would work with these too? :thumb:

I must confess, though, that it sounds like a lot of work compared to traditional mothering/cloning (to me) but perhaps not. I'd like to see you try that one!
