Xlr8's Quest For The Best - 2012

damn
very good report there X
i cant describe all the different smokes in detail
i usually feel stoned or really stoned lol

Thanks Chronic! Haha, sometimes it's hard. I try to capitalize on moments where I really notice something unique and jot it down. :)

Congrats and :goodjob: on the Deadhead Ripper Sounds very interesting Good Luck on treating those Damn aches and pains from arthritis

Hi Clayhead - :thankyou:

The pain thing has been a battle and tough to address. Nothing seems to help much, at times. But, there are a few strains that seem to help considerably with elements of it, or at least help to relax a little despite it (the pain).

Just trying to catch up today, and came across your smoke report!!
NICE work my friend!!
Sounds like you've got a keeper there with that breed.
Can't wait for the next report.
I've got a joint rolled up waiting for it..

Thanks Vick - appreciate that a ton. It does look like it could be a keeper - really promising so far. The resin production is insane! :yahoo:

Deadhead Ripper nugs

Since it's been tough the past few days to get pics of the plants, I thought I'd take a couple of pics of small "sample" nuggets from the Deadhead Ripper. Even for smaller, lower nugs they are just covered in trichomes and incredibly sticky. These have been dried for about 4 days to a nice sticky smokeable/vapeable level, but obviously not fully cured. You wouldn't know that by how nice and tasty they are when vaping though! Promise I'll get more plant pics asap too. :)

Sorry to hear things were in the dumps for you X.
Wishing you well.

We'll all be here waiting for those plant pics!:nomo:
Some beautifully resinous nugs you got there.
And thanks for your advice about talking to OMM about pots!
He's an amazing person..

how many days/weeks premature is that you think? to the naked eye that looks to be cloudy? hard to tell with camera lights e.t.c

just like another plant ive seen recently...no white pistils, can i expect if i still got tons of white pistils im not ready...until i find my magnifyer i have only my eyes to tell me if its ready =/

yeah only the magnifier reveals true truth lol

Goodness Gracious Great Balls of Fire ..................Hey Xlr8 They are dripping Trichs Looks like a Snowball !!:bravo:

Thanks Clayhead - there are a couple of "cola" buds that are insane on this plant - I hope I can get a good pic of them. They are nearly white they are so covered in trichomes. :yummy:

Hey Vick - Thanks buddy!

Yes, OMM is an amazing person. I need to get caught up on his thread badly. I've only been quickly peeking in for a few days now, so I'm behind. I did make a run to the hydro store recently and saw a couple of sizes bigger on the air pots - wish I could remember what they were specifically but one looked about 4-5 gallons or so if I remember correctly. Air-Pots are amazing for soil or coco coir drain-to-waste style plants. They give you really accelerated growth - though they usually require more frequent watering/feeding than standard pots.

The secret to them is packing the insides tight to the wall, getting the medium really packed in the spaces where it protrudes. Seems counter-intuitive a bit, but that's an important trick with them. Oh, and they can be put together upside-down. If you give them a try, make sure you understand which way is up (the end with no-holes in the "nubs" is the top). I did a few upside down and they are a pain to work with if you make this mistake as water shoots out of the holes and gets everywhere, and the roots want to exit the bottom... This might sound silly, but I made this mistake, and when I shared it a while back a few people let me know that they had made this mistake too. :)

The plants really love the extra aeration to the root zone with Air-Pots.

now thats a great post X but I have to spread the love. so there is a chip on the bar when you ready:)

It seems Airpots are a little hard to come by in these parts.
But I think I've decided on these Hercules pots my shop has. Almost the same thing as the airpot..
gunna go with 4- 35L pots with a 50-50 mix of CoCo and promix. (plus some vermiculite). I'm going to put a layer of Hydroton on the bottom and the top of all the pots to aid with drainage. After talking with OMM, seems 4 would fit nicely in my 5x5 tent. Then scrogg it to the max! He said he was about to try the same thing! Going to keep a OG mother in one of those pots too..
Off today to buy Coco, soil, hydroton, pots, cal mag, hydrozyme, and maybe a new hood!
So this will be my last grow with soil, then I'm going DWC next!!! Can't wait

As far as pistils, I would expect at least most of them to be brownish-red when it's ready. Typically 75% brown/red or more. But, that depends on the strain and genetics. Sometimes, too, sativas will have multiple or extended harvest windows, confusing the issue somewhat. It's a bit more straightforward on a indica or indica hybrid.

As far as the Deadhead Ripper, I think I could take it down now, honestly. It's reallllly close. It's more cloudy than clear, with hardly any ambering. But, there were still a fair number of clear trichomes, believe it or not, when I checked it a couple of days ago. I almost went ahead and chopped it, but decided to wait a little longer. There are a smattering of white pistils still, but as you mentioned... not many. It also seems to be fattening up like crazy the last few days, so I'm glad to have waited a bit more as this plant is in overdrive pumping out resins at the moment.

I am planning on harvesting her in a week or so - perhaps sooner. I'll start a flush in a few days, and I've scaled down the nutes a bit. I've also dialed back the daylight the last few weeks from 11.5, to 11, now 10.5 hours of daylight. Some of the calyx's are so plump right now that they look near the size of a blueberry (the fruit not the strain). This was a major trait of the Deadhead OG female in the genetics, and a nice one to have carried over into this cross. :)

Honestly, I look at the pistils changing, the trichome cloudiness/ambering, etc., but I also look for the pistils to recede into the false seed-pods after withering. I look for most pistils to be brownish/red, and to be shriveled/receded. I also look for the calyx/seed-pods to be so swollen that they look almost seeded. Basically, I am waiting for them to "look done" which took me a while to get a good feel for. I compare that "look done" factor along with trichome cloudiness and samples that are quick-dried to assess the "effect" of the bud when considering best harvest.

The Deadhead Ripper looks pretty done on the outside, but the trichome cloudiness is still saying wait a bit longer, and it would be a shame to pull it when it is still hitting overdrive with resin production...

All of these are mostly sativa hybrids, so the proper harvest window is a little longer than on a typical indica or indica hybrid, too. In the end, I think this one will be about 9-weeks. The Jack the Ripper and the OG Ripper might be more like 10-11 weeks (we'll see!).

Thanks X!

an alternative to a air pot is in GiGabnes journal. LOL but it is realy a pretty good diy way to go.
I have no clue how to link so if you look you will find it. good stuff:)

Thanks fish,
I'll check it out..

yeah only the magnifier reveals true truth lol

It sure helps! I do consider a few other factors (see post to Gigabane) as well. There are some cool digital microscopes out there, and in the states R@dio Shack has a nice little pocket microscope that works pretty well for about $15-20$ (at least they used to). I have a kids toy, an "Eye-clops" that is a digital microscope that works with your TV, that works nicely too. :) I'd really like to get one of those Celestron versions that you can take pictures with, too - might just put that on my X-mas list. ;)

sigh. wont let me rep you.

good stuff mate.

heah mine is still making white pistils and is at least 2/3 white, even the orange ones still look fairly fresh...i only have my eyes to loock at trichs atm, but they look completly clear.

i just dont know how long i may have to wait. most of the flowering was done with a mere 180w of flouros and only hps for a week now.

my dilema is more about whether i should wait to start my hydroganics or go 2 grows at once which will be a pita tbh, but will speed up my life success, lol

It's the thought that counts fish cake - thank you! :)
