Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hey, Brother! I hope you're doing well!

Great work on the hash, and you can ingest it any way you'd ingest hash. Smoke it straight in a hash pipe/bowl, break it up and sprinkle on top of some meds in a bong/vape or roll in a joint, smoke it under glass, between two hot knives warmed up on the stove. Or, you can get an attachment called a "hash bell and skillet" (sometimes called a "vapor globe and nail", but they're actually slightly different) that basically let's you vape extracts through a bong:

BTW...I didn't even realize you could get root aphids in hydro? Don't the little F'ers drown? Good luck on that! :goodluck:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

the old hot knife trick, i remember it well, turned loads of my moms knives black when i was younger, but it works but i think its a bit of a waste, prefer to roll it in a spliff and chill, most hash gives couch lock affect

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Pucks are for storing, or break'em up and put'em on a bowl. Or smoke'em in a pinch hitter/sneak-a-toke to say, "Bubye" to the world for a while.

hehehe mixed strains gets you mixed results. want a little of everything?

Gonna hang on to them for just such an occassion. Sometimes I've "post mixed" several different strains at once in my kief box, and it is definitely a much "fuller" experience. I find it is superb at relaxation and pain relief that way. When I make cooking oil for brownies, etc., I use several strains mixed at once normally. It really creates a "holy shit!" experience. ;)

Hope your time away brought you some spiritual renewal and leaves you feeling rejuvenated. :thumb:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Looking awesome for the next run X!:high-five:

I love how easy you make everything look :bravo:

If I've had a really really bad day, I'll just break off a piece from a puck, and sprinkle it on a nice bowl ;)

Hi Missbud -

Sounds like a perfect way to end a really bad day. ;)

Thanks a bunch for the compliments. If I make anything look easy, it's an illusion. I get so worn out doing even the most menial tasks anymore, and was starting to find my little indoor garden quite tasking at times. It's been a whole lot of work trying to make sure the bugs are at bay, but one side benefit is that it forced me to slim down the plants a lot. I scrapped most of the plants I was keeping in the little veg space I created.

It makes me happy to see you around again! :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

loving the puks, that press does good job, what you recon each one about an 8th, 3.5g or slightly more, what we do with solids in uk or double zero is burn it and sprinkle it into a nice spliff, the hash or solids we can buy off the street it usually really dark and pressed into 9oz blocks with a tamp on, usually has chunks of plastic in it, sometimes you get some really nice squidgy black that you can play with like blue tack or play dough, then just put a lighter to it till it fluffs up then pinch some off and sprinkle it in like dust, when you burn it slightly it allows you to sprinkle it like dust, but where i am we roll spliffs with tobacco in them it makes the weed go further, instead of just getting 2 blunts out of an 8th so we prefer to make it last and get a long rizla fill with half a cig and spread out then sprinkle some weed or hash on top, what i have found with hash though is thats its more of a night time smoke and mongs you out, but been as yours is not processed with crap like old vinyl records n crap like that, you will probably find it will be the same buzz as smoking the plant, but as its a mixture im sure it will leave you pleasently stoned, give us a smoke report when you get round to trying it, i sure wish i had the chance to try some decent hash instead of all the comercial stuff we get here, ive got a few grows to do before i got enough to make any hash, but it is my goal so ill keep all the trim and make some when i have got enough

Hi DonP -

I really don't know what they weigh. Since everything I grow and do is for myself, I guess it's just not that important to me. I couldn't even guess at what they weigh, but I'm guessing not much. :) They're about the size of two pennies stacked on top of one another. One a little less, one a little more, and another almost exact.

I've never smoked/vaped/blazed hash other than finger hash from harvesting, so I'm pretty clueless, lol. I'll probably just break some off and sprinkle it on a bowl like people have suggested. I'm thinking of mixing it with some bud in my vaporizer whip to see how it works...

It has a nice color. Now I understand why people use the term "blonde" to describe hash. Pretty apt based on the color of these pucks.

Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts! :thumb:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

No problem my good friend!

Some of the plants did really really well like the Urban Poison, AK47 and Headcheese. The lemon kush was the surprise at it came from a hermied seed. 6 colas all 4 to 5 inches in legnth. Everyone has just been blown away by the plant we didn't hold out much hope for. Mojo did pretty well and the BC God Bud did ok. Hawaiian Big Bud was a letdown and the blueberry plants did soo poorly that we will just be making hash from those plants.

So glad to hear your doing better. Ya had me worried

Thanks brotha! I'm doing okay, but there's been some ups and downs. Last few days have been pretty down (physically), but I'm trying to not let it get to me mentally. You do have some really great strains! Too bad the Blueberry didn't work out for you. I loved the flavor, but the yield and potency left a lot to be desired. Cool on the Lemon Kush!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

AWESOME JOB XL! :thumb:

Looks like a commercial product! :)

Thanks GG7!

Yeah, that little press does a nice job. Still trying to decide what to do with the rest of my shake/trim, but these pucks are a good option I think. Appreciate you dropping by. :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Well you already know your're in my thoughts! But, you also know you have my best wisahes indeed! I know you will kick these lil bastards asses if it's at all possible. Not sure if you have any or not but AzaMax does an excellent job of killing the lil commies as well

Yes, I've had luck using Azamax in the past for bugs, too. I do have a small amount, but I'd need to buy more if I go that route. Right now, I'm pressing forward with the SNS products and crossing my fingers that they'll do the trick. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Amen on wining MOTM.....It gave you the best possible army to fight those little bastards. It will be along battle X, more power to you!

Thank You for the other information on harvest times and conditions. Your the Best X. :bravo:

Thanks my friend!

Yes, I'm thinking it could be a battle, too. The plants look fine, and I dont' see issues in the bloom tent, but I know it's foolish to think it'll be easy. I thought that was a good article on harvest times, too - glad you liked it. :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

harvest time and dark cycle read for resin production was very informative thanks for the post X

Glad it was helpful, Chronic. :thumb:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Heya X, time to tell those pets to stay the hell out of the grow area!

You have probably seen me mention this, but just a reminder. As a preventative, I routinely spray my hallway and all areas around my grow with Home Defense. Before I started growing, I sprayed everywhere twice a week for 3 weeks. Since then I spray about once a month. Which reminds me I think I'm overdue and need to do that again today. I bought 1 gal from wally world or Home Despot, can't recall, and it comes with it's own sprayer. In 8 months I haven't used the entire gallon yet.

I forgot to mention that I use that, too! I think I did pick up the idea from you a while back. That's why I'm sorta floored by finding these - I take many precautions and I don't over water anything - let things dry good before watering. I must have brought something with me, or got contamination in some way I haven't considered. Maybe just that I have a dog who spends a lot of time outside and in. I don't know. I think my many precautions have served to limit things, though. It seemed pretty contained to a couple of plants, and the qty appeared to be small.

Maybe I caught it early, too. It kills me that they got by the Home Defense, mosquito dunks, Hot Shot pest strips, etc. etc. Well add to that now, the SNS 209 systemic and the drenches/foliars of SNS 203. Still, I saw a live root aphid today, though it appeared drunk, weak, or stunned and was on my workbench. Thought it was dead at first until I tried to scoop it up and it feebly tried to move. At first I was upset that I saw another one, but maybe the positive is that it seemed really beaten, lol.

They've not been in the Flo N Gro that I can tell, and the plants in the tent are still looking good. Thanks for the tips on the Home Defense. :thankyou:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Sounds like you got rid of the root aphids. You got an army of pest defense set up already. It sucks when you do everything right and something blind sides you!! :wood:
I really like those hash pucks you made! What do you use to press them so perfectly? I have never used a presser before but it looks like it is a great way to go. :)
It sounds like you are feeling better too! I sure hope so!! :Namaste:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

could i just pick your brains a minute, you know the plants dont like to have soaking wet roots in soil, so how do they survive when their in liquid constantly like in dwc, im only asking as i have got a 2ltr dwc hempie and the roots where barely growing out the top pot into the liquid below, so i changed the bottom bottle to a deeper one and added a load more liquid and a higher flood hole, now when i put the top half in the 2 ltr res with the liquid in it, the roots where barely touching the liquid and it was up to the over flow hole, anyway i just checked it before light went out and the roots have grown like 3 inches, all the holes in the top bottle has suddenly sprouted roots everywhere their growing like crazy, plus the liquid was up to the hole i drilled to drain it when it gets to full, well the roots had drank nearly 2 inches of liquid, now the soil wasnt dry in the top bit of the hempie as i water from the top so it drains into the bottom, i was just curious how the roots survive and drink a hell of a lot more when they are under water yet when their in a pot they prefer less water,

i have not put an air stone in yet but think ill add one due to the sudden mass of root growth, i was so shocked, the roots are growing quicker than the plant and drinking a lot more than it ever has when i add liquid from the top, anyone know why it happens

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Sorry about the RA, them little things are horrible. Sounds like you are on top of it as always. :goodjob:

Sorry about the RA, them little things are horrible. Sounds like you are on top of it as always. :goodjob:

Thanks HMG -

I hate bugs. And mold. Bugs and mold = !@#%!

I don't know how on top of it I am yet. I'm doing a lot, but I've read that they start out asexual, and each one is born already pregnant with the next generation. I think I read somewhere that one adult root aphid can have something like 200 new babies in a day? :yikes:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Yup, that stuff is great. Home Defense!

Just sprayed some more of it tonight. I'm like bug ninja right now, lol!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Sorry to hear about the pests Brother! But, somehow I doubt you'll let them win...You're too methodical, and intelligent...(OCD lol)
Kidding buddy you know that. Just do me a favor, though, and don't freak out and pull the whole grow...I think if you took a few months off, it'd be like having my favorite neighbor go to Canada for the summer...A bummer in other words:rofl:
MAN I'm ripped tonight, sorry for wearing the lampshade, but seriously, stay calm, and ride it out. Hell, at least take them into the 4th week of flower, and take notes on the effects. I know its a lot of work for you to do, if they're a lost cause, but I really think you still have a decent yield coming...Hope it gets better for ya my friend:Namaste:

OH, AWESOME pucks man!!:bravo:

Thanks as always for being there to make me smile, Quix! I dunno on these bugs - they're persistant. I'll keep fighting though, as they don't seem to have any numbers yet, so the precautions must do something. I really want to see the Chocolope and Super Lemon Haze through if I can - been jones'n for more Chocolope, and the SLH is something I really want to try.

Good to have you by - thanks again my friend. :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hey, X, Thanks for that! and +rep to ya!

I gave the dark period not to increase potency, but to help cut down on the "green" flavor of chlorophyll-laden plants, and to try to pack on a little more weight on the buds right before harvest, since growth happens in the dark. It looks and smells to me that it has worked, over the last harvest which smelled a little of alfalfa at harvest... meh... I know it's probably myth/legend/whatever, but it's something I did to experiment with flavor, more than anything...

Good luck with those root aphids, they're a pain in the patootie

EDIT: GAH! someone rep him for me... it wouldn't let me do it, I gotta spread some love around first.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Those root aphids are incredible and terrible!! They are born pregnant? 200 babies a day?!! Even just one would be a problem. Ouch!! :cough:

I have harvested during different times too during the light cycle. Not experimenting but out of nessessity. I have never noticed a difference in potency.

I never thought of doing the dark to get rid of the chlorophyll flavor.
:yummy:
Good to hear you are a bug Ninja now! I hope you get your black belt soon!! :high-five:
:goodjob:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Lastly, I found this article from BigB*ds magazine interesting - the author (Lee Leissett) did a comparison with dark times prior to harvest (Jandre I thought of you). I tried the 48 hours darkness last time, but I didn't like how limp some of the lower branches were, personally:

"One question I have been asked repeatedly by medical marijuana growers is when to harvest in relation to the light cycle. Many growers want to know if harvesting during the light cycle versus the dark cycle makes any difference in the potency of the cannabinoids. There have been many opinions on this subject and also many perpetuated myths. I decided to experiment with harvesting at different periods throughout the light cycle to see if there was a noticeable (measurable) difference in cannabinoid potency.

I decided to harvest three identical plants, all grown in the same room, at different times throughout the room’s light cycle. The first plant was harvested right before the light cycle occurred. The second was harvested right after the light cycle finished. The final plant was moved to a completely dark, temperature and humidity controlled room where it sat for 48 hours and was then harvested.

There was no noticeable difference in cannabinoid potency. We tested three samples from each plant and averaged the results of each plant to compare to one another. The results were virtually identical. There was no difference in potency in relation to the time at which the plants were harvested. Since machines are not always accurate, we also provided a few patients with blind samples to see if they noticed any differences in the samples. No differences were noted.

It is true that resin production on a medical marijuana plant peaks during the dark cycle. Because of this fact, there has been a myth perpetuated that cannabis harvested right before the light cycle begins — or cannabis given 24-72 hours of dark before harvesting — will produce a higher potency medicine than medical cannabis harvested during the light cycle. The problem with this theory is that a typical medical marijuana plant has a blooming period of about 50-60 days. When the overall time of the blooming cycle is taken into consideration, an additional day or two is pretty insignificant. The essential oils and resins are not produced overnight but instead are steadily built up over the entire blooming process. The number of cannabinoids degraded in one light cycle is completely negligible when comparing potency of the final product.

I tend to harvest my medical marijuana plants right before the light cycle begins, but this has always been a matter of convenience over anything else. It allows me to harvest and remove one crop and then bring in the next crop right at the beginning of the light cycle. This gives my next crop twelve hours under the blooming lights to better establish themselves before their flowering period begins (12 hours of darkness). My plants seem to transition better from vegetative to blooming if I start with the light cycle instead of immediately placing them in the dark cycle.

Harvesting during the light or dark cycle should be determined by personal preference and convenience. Growers should not get hung up on harvesting at a particular time in the light cycle. Plants harvested when they are ripe will be potent regardless of the time of day they are cut down".

Peace and love to you all! :)

Excellent article! Here's another opinion on the dark period from our old Bud Brother, Shaggie420, in OMM's journal:

OldMedman Goes Indoors

I can't confirm which is correct, but I do try to give my plants the dark period when I have no clones rooting in the cab.
