Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hey Brother X, just wanted to drop in and say I was thinking aboutcha...I saw you were about to have some work done (Dr. work), and am sending you good vibes for a successful trip this round. I would love to hear it did you some good, and that it can give you some relief this time.
Next, for what its worth, I bought the 160 and 220 micron, 1 gallon bags from Virtual Sun Hydroponics, through @ m @ z0n .com...Think I only payed around 18 bucks for the two bags. I have yet to try them, but am reall looking forward to it...I think I'll give them a try this weekend.

trichome bags dot com do a pack of 8 x 1 gallon bags of the following sizes 220 Micron
160 Micron
120 Micron
90 Micron
73 Micron

or they do these for 5gallong buckets
3 Heavy Duty All Mesh Bubble bags

not sure if the all mesh means anything, its not something i have tried before, in the past we used to throw anything away that coudnt be smoked, what im gona do now it keep all my trimmings and i think its ok to freeze it then when i have got enough make some hash, or if i can just dry it and keep it in a cardboard box till i have got enough then ill do that, im not sure what way is the best to store it, i will probably like enough trimmings from say 3 separate grows so need to find the best way to store all the leaf and stems,

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

soz, the price of the 5g bags was $43, im not sure if thats cheap or not, i would possibly save up and order the set of 8, sounds like a good price to me, i know their smaller but it would just mean using smaller amounts, it would take longer but i think you would get more hash using the smaller size due to sorting through smaller amounts

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

This is the wifes department not mine! If I get too nosey she kicks me outta da kitchen!
I do love her teas she makes though

That's how I usually feel about drying and curing, although I kinda did this last harvest myself as far as the drying part. Gulp. ;)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Yes, the price is right on those bags. The pollen press is cheap as well, but not a lot of details about it. I am in the market for one of those as well and that price is very competitive if it is similar to the cosmic press. I emailed the owner with a few questions. I will let you know anything I learn from him.

Thanks for the link X.

No prob. I am going to order something soon myself. I recently bought a small, but high quality press. I was going to go cheap on it, but I'm a sucker for things that are well made when I get to touch/hold/feel them. Bought it local, obviously haha. Just need to get the bag ordered but I'll do that soon I think. :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

I too, love Rapid Rooters, buy them by the case to save money. Best solution I have found for both seed and cutting success. I also use a power cloner machine I made myself. That comes in at about 90% success depending on how I make and prepare a cutting. Scraping the last 1" of the stem seems to increase my rate although a simple 45* cut and a dip in the gel works equally...

Rapid Rooters rock! I scrape sometimes, sometimes I don't. Either way it seems to work, though I've noticed especially good root development, fairly soon on the scraped ones. Sometimes, I'm just in a hurry and do the angled cut. Mostly I've just been experimenting but I feel good about the methodology now so I'm ending the playing around as it gets to be alot of work!

I have about 25-30 bags, @ 50 liters per bag, of Hydroton that I used in my growing set-up. Cleaning it IS INDEED a pain in the A$$ but I have found an easy/inexpensive way to rid it of those fine roots that get interwoven throughout. I use a 2 gallon pot with a 3/4" dia. hole at the bottom that has a piece of stainless perforated screen covering the hole. This allows water to drain but not too fast. Holes are like 1/8" dia. and perhaps 4-5 to the inch. Any screen will do, but the object is to allow drainage of the water at a rate that allows the pot to be filled up. I then dump the used Hydroton into this and use high pressure from the garden hose to literally power the water down into it. It fills up with water and some float too, which allows the root material to float up to the top. Most will float up and roll out and then off the top lip of the container. I pressure the water/fill/drain cycle a few times (only takes a few seconds each time). I then dump this (cleaned) Hydroton into a large container, like a plastic garbage can, and fill to the top with a +/-15% bleach/water solution and soak overnight. Next, dump out and thoroughly rinse. Any residual is so weak it doesn't have ill effects on the next plants. A garbage can of 30 gallons holds about 150-200 liters of Hydroton, so my harvest, usually 4-8 plants is enough to fill the can.
God, I hope this is clear; hard to write a description of how something is done...

I understood. Sounds like a good way to do it. I've noticed that if I just let it soak in buckets with mild bleach solution and agitate the rocks good, the root/organic material usually rises to the top and I use a sieve to skim the gunk out of the water, works pretty good. Sucks super bad though, huh?!

Appreciate you dropping by and your advice on the dry ice, too. :thankyou:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Thanks everyone for the advice on the bubble bags and dry ice. I'm not up to replying to all the great tips individually right now, but wanted to say a big:

:thankyou:

I think I know what I want to do, just need to place the order. Going to probably go with a single 90 micron bag for now and see how it works.

Also, thanks for the well wishes. All is well, and I'm just getting back into the swing of things. Really appreciate all the kindness and love!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Xlr8, the next run sounds great. Good luck on your bag decision, lots of great info here. I'm thinking that a 220 or 160 bag would work great if you had a longer table to walk down to seperate it out the first stuff would be used to press, and the rest for cooking with.

X, I hope all is well in your world buddy. Hopefully this will give you some relief.

Best wishes my friend. :Namaste:

Thanks HMG. Sure appreciate the well wishes my friend! I agree with you on the 220 or 160, but I don't have a table like that - so I'm thinking of going with the lower micron bag. We'll see. I'm still pondering but that's the plan for now. :)

Thanks man, you rock. I looked at those, too, but will probably go with the 5 gal bags when I get some. Let me know how you like those and how it turns out! :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Supermarkets Stock it. Even in my little podunk town I used to live in of 13k people had it in the local supermarket.

yup-yup! Exactly! High grade: Press, enjoy! Medium Grade: Press, save for emergencies... Final run: Make butter.

You're right, that is a nice price for that pollen press. Those usually go for about 40-50 anywhere else. Bulk buyer, maybe?

Thanks for all the tips and advice on the bags, Jandre. I really appreciate it. Think I have my plan, just need to pull the trigger. Honestly, my biggest hold up was I'm tempted to go rogue and try BHO. But, seems like a pricey and potentially dangerous proposition, so I'm thinking for now just ordering a 90 micron bag and some dry ice to see what I think...

This pollen press is burning a hole in my pocket so to speak... Maybe I'll scrape the kief out of my kief box and press it for fun. I have a little wooden box with (2) different micron screens (100 and 120) in it to separate kief out. Whenever I grind up material for a days use, it goes in this box so I can capture stray trichomes as they get knocked off. There's a fair amount built up over about a 2 year period - there must be about 10-15 strains of kief in that box. What do you suppose the odds are that I forget my name once I compress some of that and smoke/vape it? Just checked it out, and there's a lot more there than I thought... :)

Damn X, yout journal moves so damn fast. Just wanted you to know I was thinking of ya and pulling for a speedy recovery! Can't keep a good man down as they say.

Thanks buddy! I was blown away by the awesome flowering pics you put up the other day. It was so good to see those things really bulking up nicely for you. You're off to a great start - truly. Thanks a bunch for the well wishes. :thumb:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

I hope I didn't miss anyone/anything - please let me know if I did. It's been a little more difficult for me to spend as much time on here lately, and I keep getting way behind on things. I am extremely appreciative of all the good tips and ideas for the dry ice and bubble bags. Also the well wishes rock - I'm feeling a bit better and much more positive mentally, which is half the battle. :thankyou:

Idealy, I'd have gone with the 5 gallon bags, and I'd like to try the all mesh...Also, I wish I had picked up a bag or two with a smaller mesh, like a 120 and a 90...I'll let you know how these work out...:Namaste:
