Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

hey x, theirs a great vid or dvd by jorge cervantes, its called jorge cervantes ultimate grow dvd, if you search the net you can find a torrent version and download it like i did, it has a great section on the dvd towards the end about making hash and what kind of smoke you get from each size of bag you use, he used all the bags you can buy starting with big holes and working to the smallest holes and he gives a verdict on the best hole size, it wasnt the smallest size as it contained broken trics and im sure it was the next bag size up to that, ill try and find the part in the dvd and let you know, you should be able to get the grow dvd yourself, theirs loads on the net, i just googled n came across that one and it pretty much covers everything

just watched it again and he says the best hash comes out of the 76micron bag, might be best if you watch it yourself mate so you can see the whole process and judge for yourself what you think is best, used 5 or 6 bags and ended up with 5 or 6 piles of hash, the smallest was 46 microns or something like that, its right towards the end of the dvd if you want to skip past the rest,

Thanks for going out of your way to look that up for me. I really appreciate that brother! :high-five:

Hey X,

Trying to find where I bought my last bag and what micron mesh it is. I think 160. Getting ready for work so I'll try to look it up when I get home. But iirc I think it was about $15 total and shipped out of Colorado.

Awesome man, thanks!

I would use the 220 mesh. Maybe I am wrong but isn't 220 micons smaller than 80? My 220 Micron bubble bag is from a 5 bag set and this bag was the second to finest mesh bag. I don't like keif. With the 220 micron all I got was yellow trichome hash. Killer.

My bag would not fit over any 5 gallon buckets that I had. So I used a small round rubber maid garbage can. I used bungie ties to secure really good. Worked great. Within minutes I was smoking hash.

Also, I could not find the dry ice pellets. I bought a block of ice and carefully broke it into small pieces using an ice pick and some rubber gloves.
:high-five:

Nice, I am so psyched to try it!

Xlr8: No, get the a bag that is between 65 and 80 microns... 110 is very fast, but you get plant material very quickly into your triches reducing the purity of your hash in a hurry.

Closet Farmer, I think you have the US MESH confused with microns... they are NOT the same 220MESH bag is actually .067mm or 67 microns... 220 microns is actually .22mm, 110 is .11mm, and 80 microns is .08mm. It's not like "Guage" where the bigger the number, the smaller the diameter, or the US MESH that gets smaller in diameter as the number rises.

By the chart above, your 220MESH bag was actually .067mm, or 67 micron. this makes perfect sense as 65 to 80 microns is the best size to use to separate the trichomes from the plant material before that too gets pulverized by the dry ice and begins to come through as well.

What does mesh size mean? Figuring out mesh sizes is simple. All you do is count the number of openings in one inch of screen (in the United States, anyway.) The number of openings is the mesh size. So a 4-mesh screen means there are four little squares across one linear inch of screen. A 100-mesh screen has 100 openings, and so on. As the number describing the mesh size increases, the size of the particles decreases. Higher numbers equal finer material. Mesh size is not a precise measurement of particle size.

The chart really helps me - nice! :thanks:

Xlr8: No, get the a bag that is between 65 and 80 microns... 110 is very fast, but you get plant material very quickly into your triches reducing the purity of your hash in a hurry.

Closet Farmer, I think you have the US MESH confused with microns... they are NOT the same 220MESH bag is actually .067mm or 67 microns... 220 microns is actually .22mm, 110 is .11mm, and 80 microns is .08mm. Thank you for clarifying! I was confused with US Mesh and Microns. By your chart I am actully using the 67 microns which is perfect.

I just use the second to last bag from my 5 bag kit. I will never used the other bags again. Making bubble bag hash is very tiresome and time consuming. And the only Hash that is smokable is what goes through the second to last bag and ends up in the last bag. Now that I have microns and US Mesh figured out. I would like to find a metal 70 micron screen. I noticed some hairs come off the nylon mesh. :high-five:
:thanks:

hehe, glad I could clear that up for you. I thought that's what had happened. Try that shopping site that shares its name with a huge rainforest in South America. I got 5 1gal bbl bags for 35 bucks. I have tried them all, and can say that the 73 micron bag which I have is the best for this type of extraction. I can also use the 110 to extend the smoke, but reduce the quality. The first 20 seconds at best is pure, then the plant matter gets powdery after being frozen, and begins to come though as well. Toward the end, if I do it right, I can actually see the color change from chartreuse in the beginning to puce at the end...

Xlr8

I'm not sure of the micron size, but I use a piece of 160 silk screen used for making t-shirts and it works great for shaker hash. I think I read that in an old High Times if I remember. And it was fairly inexpensive for a 1 sq yd.

I am going to try it for the dry ice method on the current grow trim when complete.

Drive Bye Xlr.
Looks like another round huh. I don't think anyone can go wrong with SLH. Love the plant. Might be the best weed Greenhouse Seeds ever grew. I need to get some more of it in stock soon.
I can't make the call on the bags myself except I'd opt for the 5 gallon size. It's alot of work to do. I don't even want to think of how much work that could be. I guess if you onley have minimal material to work, but still just like garden we all start smaller than we should. I still remember not to long ago, I thought a 150 watt light wood be all I needed for a plant or two, LOL isn't that a joke. But the 220 is your working bag. It wood filter out 85% of the trash. But when you are trying for the best smoke posiable, it's surely NOT the right one. Finer screens take along time to drain. But I think if I had to do without a full set of 5 bags atleast, I'd get the working bag to get the bulk out and maybe a 120 to cut that left over 15% in half. That should be desent bubble hash. Man speaking of that I got alot of work out there in the deep freeze.
Looking good my friend Keepem Green

Yes, I'm psyched about the SLH. She sounds so so good to me. My wife is really excited about this one too. She loves the "lemony" flavor of our Jack the Ripper just harvested, which tastes more lemony by the day. It was almost cherry/lemon then lemon/cherry, no mostly lemon. Funny how the flavors and aromas mature as the cure progresses, and sometimes really change (sometimes not so much either).

:thankyou: everyone for the great insight and helpful posts on this. I've been soaking it up and started doing my own little research on dry ice extraction. Here's what I've determined, someone correct me if this is incorrect:

It appears the best dry ice hash can be attained either through about 100 micron or finer. OR, you can also get the fine hash using a larger micron bag (not as fine) because the best material comes out first, and the quality will go down with "time" as far as how long you shake/work it. The best example I saw of this, in practice, was a guy with a 220 micron bag that used a long glass table to "shake" the material out onto. As he shook the bags, he moved down the table. The best material was where he started, and the worst where he finished. One benefit of dry ice extraction is that the larger bags will work as long as you are mindful of having a strategy to collect the pollen in stages in order to keep the best material separate - since the higher grade material will separate out first naturally.

Having said all that, I'm thinking of going with (1), possibly (2) bags purchased individually. I'm thinking of going with a 70-90 micron bag, but might also pick up a 160 to play around with for the lesser grade material. I'm also thinking of doing "All Mesh" bags versus the ones that have the solid sides. I've found a couple of places that sell what appear to be decent bags for about $18-20 per bag sold individually - which seems like a totally great price to me.

Any opinions on the all mesh bags vs. the others? Thanks again you guys for the insight. Let me know if I'm off base with my thinking on this. +rep to all who weighed in on it (if I haven't repped someone too recently).:high-five:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

WOW...I am almost caught up!!! lol:surrender::nomo:

Today is really the first day that I'm free all day since I've been "back" on here. Things are going fine just very fast at this moment and moving is not helping lol... I couldn't help but start my catch up with you and I am so not surprised on your results and progress so far. :circle-of-love:

Really, really great job on the harvest and collection of seeds X. I pray your health is going as good as your journal! :Namaste:

I'm not sure if you said you were going to journal the next one, but I would love to experience it. Of course your health and family come first my friend.

I am always astonished when I stop by :thanks::bravo::circle-of-love:

Missbud! :)

You always brighten my day with your positivity and kind spirit - so glad to see you around. I know you've been busy, so I appreciate you dropping by. I've been having a hard time getting caught up here, too. I'm going to keep this journal going, as I never really wanted it to just be about the one round of flowering anyway. I needed a place to exchange thoughts, ideas, shoot the breeze and show off pictures of things I'm proud of, so I'll just keep the thread going on those grounds 'til it gets to be too much work or I start boring people (even more than now, haha!). ;)

Thanks again for brightening my day!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Looks like another great flower run coming X, great job with the prep for the next one. Loved the smoke reports too. You have me thinking about taking clones again. Think I'd like to try the rapid rooters this time, though, instead of the bubble cloner. Save a seed, clone your weed!!

Thanks buddy! :high-five:

I just can't see myself making things any more complicated with cloning. The Rapid Rooters are working for me in about 7-14 days reliably, and I'm 15 for my last 15 attempts now. The only clones I've lost were 2 from my first attempt, which I expected to lose because I took really poor undersized cuttings (but wanted to see if it would work).

Once I get the cuttings taken and in the rooter, all I do is try to mist the dome once/twice a day for the first week or so, and dampen the rooter with a premixed clonex solution or just water about every 3 days until roots show. I often forget about them though, but they can usually go quite a while before needing to be moistened, and the dome usually stays humid even if I forget to mist it. Couldn't be simpler, and it's been incredibly reliable so far. I practically forget about them/neglect at times them and they all survive and root! I'm sure the bubble cloners are great once you get them dialed in, but low tech is fine for me when it works so well. Those rooters are awesome for seedlings too.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Just got caught back up and wanted to throw out a big thank you for your detailed garden take down and reset post X. Love the discipline and thorough approach you take for that boring, but extremely important part of every grow. The recycling process for the rocks was especially helpful as I plan on doing that as well. Seems like a shame to throw them away.

While Im at it thanks for the info on the bubble bags from all of your readers. I am going to give the dry ice method a go next harvest but could not figure out what size bag I should get. Going to try and get my hands on a 70-80 micron size after reading the last couple of pages or just get a set if Im not able to buy just the one. Any brand recommendations as far as bags go?

Reps to a bunch of you and I Love the Pseudo-Journal X.

Hi Mr White -

Thanks a bunch brotha! I really appreciate that. I am a bit of a clean freak, but I've been served well by this trait and I think it helps in hydro. Man, I hate cleaning that hydroton though. Thing is, if you buy it new, you have to rinse it good anyway, so I see no reason not to recycle it and clean it - especially with a system like this which uses a ton of medium, hydroton being what I use. It would cost me a bunch to have to always buy new.

I've had no issues using bleach but it scares a lot of people. I might try to use just the h2o2 next time to see how I like that. It's nice that h2o2 dissapates into essentially water, and leaves no bad residue. But, like I said, using bleach has worked fine for me so far.

Here's what I'm considering:

ALL Mesh 5 gallon Single Replacement Bags, Trichome-bags

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

cant wait to see your next grow X

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Thats hillarious!! My first bubble bag purchase was from a rain forest and they were 1 gallon bags. What a waste!!!

I actually used those bags to make bubble hash!! What an awful experience!!! I thought I was the only sucker that bought those bags!! HA!!!
:cheesygrinsmiley:

Sucker? no... I got them from A M@zon site and they worked exceedingly well, and I still have them. I was just warning that if you use the larger micron bag, quality will drop pretty fast as the trim powders.

Maybe I didn't clarify. I use dry ice, not water&ice. Much, much faster.

That is exactly correct. Your approach will work just as you plan, just keep in mind to work in small areas as you shake and keep moving to a clean drop surface so you can "Grade" it. The best, as I had said before, will be in the first 20 seconds with the 160+ bag and then it will start to turn green as the quality/purity drops. Not to say that this green hash will not do the job, it will simply take a little more to do it.

I tell you what, it sure beats the hell out of letting a mixer or drill sing out for almost an hour and then still having to wait for the collected materiel to dry.

Thanks buddy!

SEE?? I told you cloning was easy!! Aren't you glad you tried it now? And it makes turn over much much faster than waiting for seeds to pop and sexing them, culling the males and leaving holes where they used to be...

Now see, those are nicely priced. Here locally, those bags are 41 bucks each. Go for those but start with only one or two because they could be made of a material that breaks easily, or degrades rapidly.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Yes, the price is right on those bags. The pollen press is cheap as well, but not a lot of details about it. I am in the market for one of those as well and that price is very competitive if it is similar to the cosmic press. I emailed the owner with a few questions. I will let you know anything I learn from him.

Thanks for the link X.

You're right, that is a nice price for that pollen press. Those usually go for about 40-50 anywhere else. Bulk buyer, maybe?

They do a lot of business thru flea bay and have a very good rating and feedback on these bags on those transactions, so I'm not too worried, especially at that price. I'm not locked on that company, either, just a good example of what I'm thinking of...

I think it's just typical CYA language anyway, though I wish companies didn't feel the need to do this stuff.

Xlr8, the next run sounds great. Good luck on your bag decision, lots of great info here. I'm thinking that a 220 or 160 bag would work great if you had a longer table to walk down to seperate it out the first stuff would be used to press, and the rest for cooking with.

yup-yup! Exactly! High grade: Press, enjoy! Medium Grade: Press, save for emergencies... Final run: Make butter.

i think its just basically covering their backs, if they ran out of one make of product that you have gone to buy they may have a similar product that does the same job, so if they sent you that and it looked different to what you ordered like color was different then it covers them from the returns, but i dont think its any kind of scam or anything like that, as for the price it means they can charge you more but it also means they can charge you less, i suppose it all depends on how much they pay for the product before passing it on to you

XLR8,
You should be able to source Dry Ice from places like Baskin-Robbins. Also, some packing places (pack-n-ship type business) stock it for shipping perishables. Any decent sized city (+50K pop.) should also have a dry ive vendor. It is a very necessary tool in the business of shipping food items...

I too, love Rapid Rooters, buy them by the case to save money. Best solution I have found for both seed and cutting success. I also use a power cloner machine I made myself. That comes in at about 90% success depending on how I make and prepare a cutting. Scraping the last 1" of the stem seems to increase my rate although a simple 45* cut and a dip in the gel works equally...

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

I have about 25-30 bags, @ 50 liters per bag, of Hydroton that I used in my growing set-up. Cleaning it IS INDEED a pain in the A$$ but I have found an easy/inexpensive way to rid it of those fine roots that get interwoven throughout. I use a 2 gallon pot with a 3/4" dia. hole at the bottom that has a piece of stainless perforated screen covering the hole. This allows water to drain but not too fast. Holes are like 1/8" dia. and perhaps 4-5 to the inch. Any screen will do, but the object is to allow drainage of the water at a rate that allows the pot to be filled up. I then dump the used Hydroton into this and use high pressure from the garden hose to literally power the water down into it. It fills up with water and some float too, which allows the root material to float up to the top. Most will float up and roll out and then off the top lip of the container. I pressure the water/fill/drain cycle a few times (only takes a few seconds each time). I then dump this (cleaned) Hydroton into a large container, like a plastic garbage can, and fill to the top with a +/-15% bleach/water solution and soak overnight. Next, dump out and thoroughly rinse. Any residual is so weak it doesn't have ill effects on the next plants. A garbage can of 30 gallons holds about 150-200 liters of Hydroton, so my harvest, usually 4-8 plants is enough to fill the can.
God, I hope this is clear; hard to write a description of how something is done...

Supermarkets Stock it. Even in my little podunk town I used to live in of 13k people had it in the local supermarket.
