Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

I put Azamax in the reservoir at a low dose of about 1.5ml per gallon. I've read in a few places now, though who the hell knows if it can be trusted, that if Azamax is run through reservoir and used more like a systemic and ongoing prevantitive, that it can be highly diluted and still be effective. So, since it's in addition to the other things I'm doing, and since the Flo N Gro seemed to be unaffected by bugs yet, I put a low level dose in. Of note, is that it turned the reservoir milky colored (I've used it before and expected this) and it doesn't seem to have had any substantial effect on the PH, which I was a little worried about. Not sure if mine will do much/anything, but I didn't have a lot of it left, and there are other people using it at these lower dosages from what I can tell with success, so thought I'd give it a try as it's secondary to the other things I'm doing anyway.

It can be used as a foliar, which is the only way I've used it prior to now. I can't remember the recommended dilution/application rates for Azamax as a foliar (or as a reservoir additive frankly). If I was closer to the label, I'd look it up for you. I'll try to remember to grab it when I'm near the grow room later and post back.

If you use it as a foliar, spray the tops of the leaves, the bottoms of the leaves, everything you can. Spray the top of the medium good, too. All of it. Really soak it from every angle, in my opinion. Raise your lights if they are close, or reduce the intensity if you can to avoid burning the leaves. Don't let the spray hit your hot HID lamps, etc.

Good luck! :goodluck:

I have used AzaMax in my res and it worked well. If you don't have the instructions let me know and I can send you a full pfd file on the stuff and applications. Heavy dose of foliar spray is 1 to 2 ounces per gallon.
Don't worry about the PH going up ot down due to the AzaMax as it won't affect it. So what your getting is normal.
And yes, it's odd to see the whole res all milky white. Kinda freaked me out first time I did it that way

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

How's the eradication coming along?

I don't know... Until today, I keep finding dead bugs or severely "stunned" looking bugs in the most sterile places like my little workbench that I use, which is kept clean. I think there is no place left for them to go with everything I'm doing, lol. My remaining "moms" were looking great, but today showed signs of distress a little bit. Not sure if it's from bugs or not, but it looked possible that insect pressure was present.

Today, I removed the netpots from the Flo N Gro, and soaked them in a Azamax solution for a while, and gave them an Azamax foliar. Since I'm still vegging anyway, and determined to eradicate things, I'm trying to really stay on top of doing multiple follow up treatments with everything. The plants in the Flo N Gro have not shown positive signs for bugs, but they have been looking a bit droopy. Hard to say though whether something else could be causing that. Heat has been higher than I'd like, too, and I'm quickly remembering why I used to always take summers off from growing.

The moms got azamax drenches and foliars, too. I haven't found more bugs on plants and saw none today during my azamax treatments, but they all look like they HAVE been dealing with bugs to me today. Sigh!

Hey hey XL, I hope all is well buddy :) I know I don't say much but I follow your thread every day :)

Hi Naph -

Nice to hear from you and know you're still around. Thanks for hanging in there even though I've been on so spottily lately. Good to hear from you! :thumb:

Keep it going and don't stop for AT LEAST 2 weeks. Gotta get the hatchers, too...

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Update from the front lines:

Today, I topped the plants in the Flo N Gro. With all the bug treating, I just realized they were really due for topping. Same thing for the moms. I took (6) tops total and put them under the clone dome. Mostly, I want to try to save the Chocolope genetics because I have no more seed and the mom had to be culled (she was hit the hardest by the root aphids). But, since I'm going through the effort, I thought I'd throw all 6 tops under the clone dome. 6 is really no more difficult then 1, and I culled all but 3 rooted cuttings in the veg space recently so a little insurance is probably good.

Here are some pictures of them just prior to topping:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

My Cloning process

Took a couple of photos while I was cloning today, and thought I'd share. As I've mentioned in the past, I use "Rapid Rooters" (Root Riot plugs are very similar and work too) to clone. In addition, I soak the Rapid Rooters in Clonex prior to using. I use RootTech hormone gel to coat the cut on the stem, as well as the node above the cut.

Okay, prior to doing this, I get all this out:

  • Scissors (for taking cuttings from plant - important that it's sterile, use alcohol)
  • Razor Knife (for make 45 degree cut on stem, again, make sure it's sterile)
  • Rooting gel (for coating the 45 degree cut and node above it)
  • Plastic cutting board (clean/sterile)
  • Small container for rooting gel (don't dip into the container - keep it sterile)
  • Clonex (for presoaking rapid rooters - I also use it to re-wet them while waiting for them to root)

Here's my process:

First, I soak them in a Clonex solution, at 5ml per liter (lightest recommendation on the bottle). For water, I use bottled spring water (think drinking water). Normally, I let them soak for 12-24 hours in this solution.

Supplies (Clockwise L to R: Scissors/knife box, Roottech Gel, Shotglass for gel, soaking rooters, plastic cutting board, small clean spoon for scooping out rooting gel into shotglass)
may_23_07.jpg

Then I give them a gentle squeeze, and a little shake as they should be wet/moist, but not thoroughly soaking wet. I use the non-writing end of a ball point pen to hold open the hole in the Rapid Rooter while I take my cutting.

When I take the cutting, I quickly trim off the excess leaves, leaving only a couple of trimmed leaves on top. Then, I place the cutting on a plastic cutting board and I make a 45 degree cut right below a node. I immediately dip the cutting in my rooting gel. Sometimes I scrape the stem, but honestly it works fine without it. I use RootTech Gel, but I'm sure many others would work, too. Then, I remove the pen from the hole in the rooter, and insert my cutting into the rooter.

may_23_08.jpg

TIP: I like to keep the humidity dome on while I take other cuttings, as sometimes they start to wilt before I'm finished. Even though they'll pop back up for me eventually, I like trying to keep them from wilting in the first place. I keep the humidity dome lid misted at all times in the cloning process (until they start to root).

TIP: If my cutting is "loose" in the rooter plug, I use a tweezers to remove a piece of rooter from an extra rooter (I like to have an extra for these purposes). I take this chunk of material, and gently stuff it into the hole with the cutting to "firm up" the cutting in the rooter. Cuttings should be steady/firmly in place and not loose in the rapid rooters.

TIP: Sometimes I leave too much leaf material and they just can't hold themselves up. In these cases, I trim the leaves more (after the fact), and so far it's almost always helped.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Plants definately were due for a topping or fim! Looking healthy!! :thumb:

Great tutorial on the cloning. I never thought about using a pen to keep the hole open. Great idea.

Thanks

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

great guide mate, should be easy enough for anyone to follow, why dont you add a link to this page and guide in your signature, then anyone that comes across or reads your journal will have a great guide to click on without having to scroll through a load of pages to find it, i might even pinch the link and use it in my signature if thats cool with you, i often browse the current journal section and check in on any new grows so think it would be a great link for them to be able to click on as many ask questions about cloning

They look great X. Sorry about the Chocolope mom, I see another on the way though.

Hope you are feeling well buddy.:Namaste:

Hi CF!

Yeah, I stole the pen idea from Subcool, I think. He clones like this, too, but he flips the rooters upside down and makes a new hole (he does this so they stand on their own - I use little holder trays).

Hi DonP -

Nice idea, what I did is put it also in my Blog. Some of the best posts (not just mine) that I think are particularly helpful or instructional from my journals I put into my blog. Anyone looking for a nice compilation of tips and tutorials, check out my blog sometime there are a few good ones in there.

They look great X. Sorry about the Chocolope mom, I see another on the way though.

Hope you are feeling well buddy.:Namaste:

I'm hoping this clone works out and is healthy so I can keep a Chocolope mom again. I don't have any more Choco seeds, and I love the strain. I'm doing okay today - thanks!! :)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

whats your blog mate, is that the how to link in your sig

4th row of writing below my avatar, to the left of this post is the link to my blog (where it says, "blog entries" with a number behind it. Just click that number. ;)

I wasn't sure what blogs were useful for here, but found it to be a pretty good place to put tips/tutorials that people (or me) might find useful. There's homemade "Clearex" recipe on there, a homemade Dutch Master "Zone" recipe too! Germination tips, tips on understanding PH... some awesome knowledge drops from Corey, the owner of Blue Planet Nutrients, too. Lots of good stuff (imo anyway!).

This is from my blog - courtesy of Corey from Blue Planet Nutrients - Homemade "DM Zone" product for healthier roots:

First of all, VERY IMPORTANT!!! : TOO MUCH copper will KILL your plants. no Joke. So please, please, please, if you use this recipe you must have a VERY accurate scale. something like a jewelers scale that measures grams to at least one decimal place.

This recipe is for 1 gallon of homemade RootZone DM

first of all, when buying copper sulfate, there a couple different formulations for that particular chemical. so, what I have done is this: The following link is for 500 grams of copper sulfate pentahydrate
CHEM CU SULFATE PENTA ACS 500G - Laboratory Chemicals - Laboratory Supplies - 8EJ50 : Grainger Industrial Supply

The molecular weight of copper sulfate pentahydrate is 249.68
The molecular weight of copper is 63.546
divide 63.546 by 249.68 and you will find that copper sulfate pentahydrate is 25.6% copper. If you use another form of copper sulfate, make sure that you know the molecular weight of the compound which you can find using a periodic table. the reason I say this is that there is also Copper(II) sulfate (cupric sulfate) which has a higher percentage of copper because it is not hydrated.
Anyway, for 1 gallon, you will need exactly 15.14 grams of copper sulfate pentahydrate which is 1.024 grams of elemental copper per liter of water and thus 3.88 grams of elemental copper per gallon
1.024 grams elemental copper per 1000 ml RO water equals .1% soluble copper.

The amount of potassium nitrate in that stuff is negligible. I don't even know why it is in there. They use roughly 13 grams of potassium nitrate per gallon which does not contribute to the potassium or nitrogen content of your nutrient solution much at all.
So, just throw in 13-14 grams per gallon of potassium nitrate (saltpeter) and you will have roughly .06% nitrogen and .15% potassium
you can get potassium nitrate just about anywhere. you can get it on ebay for about $5 a pound all day long and most of the stuff listed on ebay is refined and high quality....much more pure than what is needed for this recipe.

anyway, to re-cap this recipe for 1 gallon of homemade rootzone DM:
use 15.14 grams of copper sulfate pentahydrate
13 grams of potassium nitrate
and 1 gallon (3785) ml pure RO water

There you have it. 1 gallon of RootZone DM for pennies!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

thanks mate, im going to go an have a browse, i gota admit, corey really does know his stuff, when i told him i was in the uk and couldnt get bpn he told me to go to the garden center and write down everything that they sell nute wise then he would go through it all and talk me through whats best and how best to use it, and thats on top of all the hard work he does making and selling his product, so he really is a top bloke and knows his stuff, but since tesmp hooked me up with bpn i have not needed anything else and im even saving a bit each week for my next batch i need. i dont think i want to use anything else after watching my plants go from nothing special into growing monsters pretty much within 48 hours, the off the shelf nutes i was using must of lacked something that bpn has, and i think i know what it is, i think it lacks the C.

the C i hear you ask, surely you know what the C is, begins with C and ends in EY, i think thats what my nutes was missing a magic touch and some fine tuned nutes.

now my only worry is, im growing a plant in the aero garden and it holds 1gallon of water and ive been told to empty every weeks, but ive only got 1 plant in their and it seems to be growing ok and its been getting on 10 days now, the roots look good, but i dont really want to throw all my bpn product at this plant when i can water 2 or 3 plants with the same amount of water and it seems a waste to throw it away after when it looks exactly how it did when i put it in, is their anyway the waste can be used for my other plants or plants in veg, i just think im throwing away good money, so i think im going to visit a garden center or hydro store and see if i can find something else i can use for the aero garden instead of using bpn, im ok using it in the dwc 2ltr hempie as their is little waste as it drinks most of what i give it, but using it all in he aero garden really is draining my bpn, thats why i have not changed the res much, if the plant was suffering and didnt look healthy then id change it, at one point it looked light green so it was lacking in N so i added a bit extra nute as i was been a bit on the tight side and it made the plant look normal, so i need to find something i can use in the aero garden that will give me similar results, the aero garden is sold in my country so their must be products out their for it, so im off to the garden center when i can get a lift

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Everything is looking great X !!!
I liked your tutorial on the cloning. Perhaps I'll do one as well in my new journal thats starting on my method with the EZ cloner. So far I have a 100% success rate (knock on wood)
Love the Flo n Gro my brotha !!
Going to have to get with you and Jandre soon. I'm going to start my own breeding program. Maybe we can use skype or something.
