Woodsman's Northern Light #5 Grow

Hey Woodsman,
Those babies are looking really good, even #3 does not look bad. Your #4, the one you say is deformed, I think it has over come any deformities and is going to do you proud. Good job on the LST, how long are you going to let them veg before flowering?
For new pots have you thought about going to your local nursery and asking them if they have any you could have? They are always transplanting and have plants die on them so there is usually some pots lying around and they might sell them really cheap or just give them to you.

I have friends who chop indoors but I think that LST is the best method.

I am not unhappy that Annie is a He because now I get to try my hand at breeding and stabilizing a strain.

Well I think that as long as I grow indoor, I'll refrain from topping and use LST from now on. Time element. Outdoors it is a waist of time to LST at the 'plantling' stage. Later I use it (LST) to shape the bush when it is larger.

That will be interesting to see (pollinating). Try to document it as you do it (pics) as a tutorial. I've never attempted it and would be interested in the future since I'm good at growing males! 2 for 2 last summer!

All the local nursery's around here are closed for the season! I may make some myself with some 2.5 gallon water jugs turned up on end. Is it OK to grow in an almost transparent container?

I was thinking about #4 and your right I will just call it #4 as it's passed the test!

Not sure exactly how long I'd veg them, but no more that 5 weeks I'd say. About three more weeks or less!

This is actually the first time that I'm using LST in a 'plantling' (young plant). I do train my plants later in their life with strings and thumbtacks and such in order to sculpt them to my liking, but I've always cropped at this stage in the past, Cutting delays growth slightly and I don't want to lose any more time than necessary. On my Mazar I lost about a week of growth after I chopped until it caught back up. Cropping outdoors I've found doesn't delay growth to that extent. Perhaps if your using a 1000w system to grow then it wouldn't cause too much of a delay. My experience only.

Well you seen lilbit, she was early trained and early 12/12'ed. She is only a month and a half old from popping out of the soil right now, and just over 3 weeks of 12/12. I think she has potential for a decent yield.

At the end of the fourth week of bloom or when she shows me she is done stretching out, I am gonna pull all the fan leaves aside with ties and expose the stalks again and see if I can't force them to put budding sites along the entire branches to protect themselves. I am not disturbing her until her stretch slows as I want all the roots all that foliage is creating to drive the bud machine later in the grow to swell up the buds for nice yield or that is the plan.

Anyway I am watching

:peace: brother

I have had your lilbit in mind and I would love mine to grow up in her mold , although I won't be doing the 12/12 as early as you have.

I see you are growing NL also... lol I guess I'll be telling you first if it thicken out tomorrow is week 2 the 8th day for me hehe I'm starting to get excited my afgooey is looking excellent! My northern is a very strong girl been thru a lot of my stupid rookie experiments and still growing it almost seems like she's bigger and fuller because of the drama. My plant lost her leaves twice all of them so now the leaves are smaller but there's a lot of them... I'm just hoping my yield isn't ruined due to my curiosity. Mine seem like a very strong plant she responded very well to the topping, lst and fimming (I did all 3 had to try them out) Plus from my research NL is the best indoor plant for rookie so we will see. Wood I'm here with you to so I'll keep check you out and I'm always taking tips. How long does it take to notice the molasses?

Hey Jbleez, not sure about 'seeing' what the molasses does, simply because my last grow was the first time I've used it.. Nothing to compare really. Some things that I've read here and elsewhere: Some say it makes the bud taste better? Some say that it fattens the buds up? These things I'm not sure about. What I have learned and apparently makes sense (to those that understand these things) That it allows the roots to absorb nutrients better. The molasses allows or causes the nutrients in the soil to bread down which in turn will allow the roots to absorb them easier. This is what I have understood. Hopefully it's all true. Best to double check and investigate this yourself through the internet. That's what I did. Let me know if you learn something else.

I'm excited about this NL #5 I'm growing from all I've read about it. Should be some terrific stuff. Have I ever smoked it? Who knows? I've apparently been living in a vacuum because over the last 38 yrs that I've smoked, I really never knew what strain I was smoking!

My understanding of molasses is this. It is first very simple plant sugars, great source of basic building block type materials, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Blackstrap molasses though has what is left over in the sugar making process from the cane plant. Tons of micro nutrients left over in blackstrap.

What I use it for is feeding my beneficials. I am growing organically in soil. Organic nutrients are large complex molecule chains and require a full culture of beneficial soil bacteria and fungus to be broken down into simple NPK and other supplements that the plant can uptake as it desires. The microzoo eats the nutes first and poops out less complex more reactive molecule chains that break down fast so can't be bottled. It is these less complex molecule chains that the roots adore like candy. I feed my microzoo in between nute feedings with the molasses to keep them multiplying and happy and ready to feed the plant the next time I put nutes in.

Didn't mean to step on your explaination Woodsman, but that is what I have gathered from my reading.

I grow on this basis. I feed my soil. My soil feeds my plant. My plant makes me happy. So instead of learning how to grow marijuana what I have really done is learn how to grow soil....wait :ganjamon:.

:peace: from the mountains.

Thanks for the informative lesson MH... i will keep this on the outer edge of my ear until i can find the blackstrap... reps but i gotta spread more

Thanks buddy for coming to my rescue, I am not really good with chemistry and trying to translate what I've read about the use of molasses into a descent explanation is tough for me. You've done a better job!

Ahh the downfall of men...girls like compliments and always function better with more. When they get compliment deprived is when you get deprived....:ganjamon:

Hey buddy, yesterday I felt sorry for the girls when I looked at them all tied down. So I was weak and took off their bonds. Then last night I said "what the heck" and tied'em up again! A little pain won't hurt'em.

Thanks again for your "molasses" explanation up top!

Hello folks, update time @ 2 weeks Veg ( for most of the plants):

Just re-potted the little one #5 about an hour ago.

LST in progress for plants #1, #2 and #3 (just started #3 today), #4 is not quite ready for LST yet.

Here are the latest pics from just a few minutes ago:

Group shot

Plants #1 next to my new WallyMart temp/humidity gauge. Notice the low humidity @27 so I'm going to place open containers of water in the tent. Plant #2 back left and #5 in it's brand new home on the left

Thats #3 in the center with it's new (as of today) LST working and #4 on the right all set up and waiting for LST sometime in the next few days

Plant #1 the oldest in LST. Notice that she has smaller undergrowth than #2 (in the next pic)

Plant #2 with nice undergrowth (ladybug -Asian Beetle-on the prowl)

She's checking out a piece of Fox Farm Ocean Forest

Things are lookin' good Woodsman.
Not for nothin' but do you keep your liquids in your grow area? If so you may want to consider taking them out of all the light and heat. I'm not certain but my understanding is that it may not be good for the stability of the nutes.

Just a thought.

Hey I see a little bit of lilbit in those girls already, look at some of those stems getting sooooo fat for so young. Good job. :goodjob:
