Woodsman's Northern Light #5 Grow

What I've learned is that one of the main jobs or reasons for the plant producing trichomes is to shield the plant from the Suns UV rays. HPS and the soft white cfls don't emit or emit very little UV. MH and cool white (daylight) cfls emit those UV rays so when used during flower in conjunction with HPS at about a 2 (hps) to one (MH) ratio, the plant is forced to defend itself by producing more trichs (resins)

I agree, MC. Although the 2700k are meant for flowering, my buds nearest the 6500k bulbs get the most trichs and the soonest too.

wow that's some great info guys I guess I need to do some research now. I had no idea what I was doing was going to help the trich development too. Thanks again.

Yo nic my buddy did this and fried a bunch of really nice plants he put one on both side walls of his grow and boy was he pissed the next day what a travesty I almost shed a tear myself for his plants all brown and burnt up so i guess the moral of that story is don't use a tanning bed to grow weed :thumb:

Good to know, i wont waste the money.

Hey Woodsman, I didn't see the original post of your lights so this may have been addressed, but your CFLs will be much more effective if they are about 1"-3" from the plant. They lose intensity quickly with distance. By the way, I feel special. My first post on your journal took you to the 1000 post mark! :peace:

I feel more special, the first post of a new millenium

You guys will hold a special place in the annuls of (420) history. I've wrote it down so I wont forget, but I lost it! LOL All of you folks out there in 420 Land are special to me. We all have a common interest in this endeavor of growing, partaking, learning and healing by way of these 'special' meds.

Warrior, on some of my pics of the tent, I have raised the lights to get better photos. I normally mention this when I do it. I like to keep my CFLs just like you said, 1 - 3 inches from the canopy. The 40w CFLs are slightly hotter than the 26w CFLs so I don't like them any closer than 2 inches from growth. A couple times a day I either adjust the height or I turn the plants slightly to avoid any touching of the lights. The fan is also a consideration. I have to make sure that the leaves which are moving from the breeze, don't touch either. I have sustained some burn damage (very minimal) from the lights during this grow. Usually when had to be away from the plants for a day. The 100w HPS is of course much hotter than the CFLs and it's not fun when I've touched it by accident while adjusting things. I keep that one about 4 to 6 inches above the canopy and that seems about perfect. That one will burn the leaves even if it doesn't touch them. I know!

Wow, I know it's only 100w but I'm surprised you can keep it that close. It may not offer the overall coverage but it seems that a couple 100w would be more efficient and get more light to the plants than a 250w. :peace:

Hey Woods, good to see the girls are doing well! How is life in the woods home? Do you have your plants ready for patio sun? You still gonna do that?

:peace: brother.

Hello brother and congratulations on being nominated! You've got me beat I'm sure! You're better looking and you had 'bi' girls hanging around your place and you know how the guys like those! You also live in Colorado! All of these are major major factors in the competition. Oh ya, yours also very very knowledgeable in many areas that pertain to this site!

If you mean carrying the ones I'm growing now down the spiral staircase and then through the living room out to the porch, not going to happen!LOL I can just see me getting a back spasm on the way down the stairs carrying Big Girl! Not a pretty site when she hits the floor! If your talking about the outdoor grow, haven't done anything yet (we're still having below freezing temps at night lately. I keep checking the ten day forecasts so I'll be on it.

The wife gave me a scare two nights ago. I was just starting to explain to her how I may be able to conceal the plants (on the porch) by making a 'fake' storage shed type enclosure (maybe four feet high). But she stopped me in mid sentence and blew my mind with this..... "I thought you were going to put the plants that are upstairs, outside and finish them there so you can stop growing inside!"....I'm like WTF (I don't swear around her so it was just for effect here). I said that 'no that's not what I told you. First of all you gave me permission to grow out there (I even mentioned it here on the thread). I went on and said, "I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I would prefer (not really) to grow in the ground, but experience has taught me that we have to many bugs and stuff (true) because of all the thick vegetation around here. You told me, 'why don't I just grow on the porch like you always do?'" Now she denies saying this at all. Can you believe it! Well let it be said. I do a lot of things for the wife. And I do them because I love her. But when it comes to growing outside. No quarter allowed! Uh uh! I told her she got her stories mixed up somehow and you can't be changing them on a whim! So she says, " You'll be growing them out there anyway whether I like it or not, so why even ask?" Ugh! Last night I smoothed things over a bit. I told her that had she just let me talk the other night, she would have learned that I was going to relieve some of her paranoia by doing the following:

OK the plan continues about the 'fake storage shed'
It would be in the primo spot (most hours of direct sun) on the deck and would have an open top. I would have a roof for it in case we get visitors. It would look like a small storage shed and it would have a padlock attached so it looks locked. Normally it would be open to the sky and the pots would be elevated. When need be, I'd put the pots on the floor and just close the lid. It would look just like a DIY shed and locked!

She has mellowed out since this was explained to her! We'll see, things change in her mind very often! Makes me crazy sometimes :rasta:

That may be true, the two would cover more surface area. The 250w would have deeper light penetration then the 100w. If your doing a SOG type grow, then maybe the two 100w would be better. I don't have that option so I use the CFLs to bump it up a bit. I have like 364w spread out over the canopy right now. I think a 400w hps would be much better because it will penetrate better. Just don't have the funds for it and with my little tent I'd be able to cook in there with the heat. As it is now I'm having heat issues and I may have to invest in another little 4 inch fan and make an additional exhaust vent on top next to the other.

I've thought of doing it every year, but just never got around to doing it! Hopefully this year will be different.. I hope we could swing it $. Won't take much, I have all the 2x4s that I'd need for the frame, Just gotta get some plywood for the two walls (at a corner of the deck - against the railing) and some lattice to side it with so it will look nice and look better. I could use plywood for the removable roof I guess.

woods, I feel your pain.
today, my wife threw the fact in my face that she is getting fat and feels disgusting ... she also mentioned that I made her cancel the health club membership (which was a mutual agreement because [1] she only went 3 times in an 8 month period and [2] I was out of work that entire time and we were trying to fix our budget).

So today, while trying to help my wife feel better about herself, I told her she can have $500 from our tax return to spend as she wishes. I specifically mentioned 3 things she talks about, a health club membership, some fancy yoga swing and a rowing machine.

Her only reply: "I cannot buy a rowing machine for that much".

Fuck man, I'm not so nice. I swear in front of my wife. I was pissed off.
If my wife (or anyone) said here's 500 to spend as you wish. I would use that 500 and find every deal I could find to get some needed bike stuff, or grow stuff, or computer stuff. I would never have the balls to complain about not being able to buy a bike for that much.

Woods....hello....did you say someone nominated me for MOM? I don't deserve that honor...I am a newbie grower. So many more deserving people......

The pressure...ehh won't win anyway. RoorRip Ahh better, :grinjoint:

:passitleft: Puff....glad she is thinking about it at least. :ganjamon:

:peace: brother.

Ya gotta remember that for a woman, to feel that she is fat or getting fat could seem like the end of the world for her. So right off man, your dead meat. Next thing you know, she'll be dragging you to the gym with her and making you eat soy beans for dinner.:grinjoint:

I was walking miles everyday at work and then all of a sudden it stopped. I haven't been active enough lately, so the aches and pains from working hard the last 30 plus years feels worse. I've got to get back in shape so that when I do get back to work, I'll be ready.

Ya Joe, Lavendars got it right, look on eBay. I would.
