Woodsman's Northern Light #5 Grow

PVC and butane would scare the hell out of me. I used a 2" polyethylene tube and never ever run more than one 10 oz can of butane at it. I do it outside, away from any structures and fill it, leave it and come back in 1/2 hour. Do this before you partake that day. No stoner mistakes allowed. You are basicially making a pipe bomb. I gas leaking pipe bomb! The more I think about this the less I want to do it again.

I think the BHO thing is too dangerous in my hands! I'd probably blow the house up! I'll just stick to my plants I think!

Thanks for all the great words guys! I really appreciate the encouragement I should be married to you guys instead of my wife. Well maybe not!

Hopefully they will all even out in about a month in time for the next stage.

Trying an experiment with the lighting and the plant placement today. If I see that it's working good, tomorrow I'll take a pic of it and show y'all. I went a little crazy using the light meter that is on my soil/pH meter.

Got up earlier and checked the plants OMG almost a disaster! Nothing damaged, thank God!

I had taken the Water container that they were all sitting in and turned it over (I actually had two inverted trays side by side and different heights). Placed the cups with the babies in them on top. Turned on all 8 of the CFLs (that was the reason for the change) had to raise the MH up a little higher. This gave each plant about about a 6.5 on the light meter instead of a 6.. Alls good right.

Checked in this morning and the MH is hanging down to the right side (missed everything Thank God) and the plants looked like me if I'm out in the sun too long! Half baked! Apparently too warm. Dirt was dry, plants drooping a little. Well I watered and rearranged everything back the way it was.

They will be fine, only in shock I'll check later to make sure....... Hopefully the last heart attach these kids will give me!

This is what I tried:

Do you use these setups to get two bulbs in one reflector?

Post number 5

CFL Light Tutorial

Thats what I have except my first 'Y' socket screws directly into a simple single socket with a push pull on off switch and from the first 'y' connector goes my other two 'y' sockets. It just too hot for the young ones (and too close) I have been turning on only two of the bulbs in each set up. They are positioned about two and a half to three inches above the tops and have worked good. I just thought that I'd 'crank' up the wattage a little and get faster growth. The combination of them being too close and thus too hot for the little ones. The 100w MH and it's reflector that I have hanging above it all, broke loose from it's rope on the left side and luckily swung down and missed the plants (no damage from that).

The set up will work (all 8 lit) later when the plant is larger and will give light to the far top left and far top right sides of the space while the 100w MH/HPS will light up the middle. Just lucky that I checked them in time (to water and reset all). Also lucky that the MH or the CFL's didn't come in contact with the plants!

Do you have a fan running between the top of the plants and the lights? That will provide more air movement and disapate some of that heat so you can get them closer and besides it exercises the stems on the plant anyway.

Ya, I got the fan (hanging on the right side) aimed at the lights and it is blowing a nice 'gentle' breeze on the little ones. the leaves have a nice slight movement to them right now.

Sketch: Shows what it will look like later when transplanted. Right now of course I've got the little ones elevated off the floor on a crate and the fan is now hanging rather than like the photo (sitting on a box), but is in the same position, aimed at lights and plants. Check out the photos in one of the earlier posts, This page or the last one.

So your collection of cfl's is still too hot even with the fan blowing? Remind me what wattage you are using.

They are all 26w daylight, but the problem was that they were too close for the 'little ones'. I had no problem when I was using two on a side which was essentially one bulb over each plant at about 2.5 inches (no closer). In fact I've moved them as high as 3 inches. Only when I applied twice as much heat did I have the problem. They were 'surrounded' bu the CFLs in my 'experiment' - too hot for plants that young.

Thats like putting (at that close range 2-3 inches away) a few hundred watts at once. Too much heat, even from the CFL's. You could tell by the droopiness and the dry earth. I had just watered the day before I did this. I think that if I had left them unchecked for awhile longer, I'd have had 5 dead plants! They will be fine now. I'll get some pics later. Just want to give them about a full day of recovery (having just watered and reset the lighting the way it was).

And the next grow I'm going to go against how I usually do it and try to use a Blue heavy 250 watt HPS and see if you can veg with that bulb. Play toys, play toys! I can always add some of the 5000k 42 watt cfl to the mix if I'm not satisfied but I just gotta know! LOL!

A lot of folks use the HPS for Veg. If you only can get one of the two to grow (MH or HPS) they use the HPS as it will work for the whole grow. Adding Daylight CFL's for veg can only help. Should work fine. Last grow with the Mazar, I had only 100w MH for veg and 100w HPS for flower. It wasn't till halfway through the flowering stage that I added two CFL's. Worked for the one plant as you saw. At least growth wise.

hey woodsman count me in i'm subscribed:nicethread: i just sprouted my first two seeds ever(queen & hawaiin wonder) and i'm hella excited for it:cheertwo: oh and i just have to say as a reference to the mazar journal way to keep up the grow and stand up to the old lady haha my GF of two years is also a sometimes smoker and is not to keen on the 6 plants in my closet haha but thats life i guess without a lil drama here and there it wouldn't be fun:smokin: great grow though dude can't wait to see the group grow into some fine lookin females:peace:and+reps

COmmjDude, Thanks for the reps! Welcome to the Grow! Good luck with your new grow also.

Life would be so much better if there was support from the wife. It is a constant battle sometimes. If I go up to check on the plants, I get stuff like "where are you going" and "didn't you just go there earlier?" Or I just get the silent treatment! Life is definitely easier when you live alone!
