Until the French invaded what was then just plain old England in the Middle Ages, there was no system of grammar, only colloquial phonetic nomenclature with ambiguous definitions
It is often said that English [US, CA, AU and so on] is essentially French pronounced badly and it is basically, with a few other bits chucked in from the Empire days [shampoo, snooker, doppleganger...]
