Wheelo's 3rd run - Attack of the Holy Shoots

i think the 200w is when the compressor is running, since my res is small (10-11 gal) and its insulated . . .and since my res is sitting at equilibrium at 67* right now i doubt it would even kick on much.

the cool thing is that the heate is built in so if i plug it in and set it at X, it will heat or cool as needed to maintain that temp. when it's not heating or cooling, it's usuing almost no watts. just for the sensors. the water is pushed through the chill by an external pump. that pump will add more watts still, but i have a feeling this wont kick on very often. . . soon it may just be heating. lol.

Oh, that's not bad at all then.

Random thought, but I guess LED lights and hydro would partner up very well as far as res temps

the funny thing is i had both of your ideas when i just realized. . . sweet, more cooling power. . . 200 more watts, ouch. lol.

go figure ;)

i haven't hooked it up yet because i need some 1/2" hose, but from the way the box reads its all in there, and i dont see anywhere i could hook anything external up to it. i would assume both models have it built in, but the site i ordered from had it worded badly and i thought i had to buy something. . . I'll find out for sure when i hook it up i'll get hose tomorrow. $200 marine depot.

$200 looks like a great price. I think I'm just going to get a heater now (from Marine Depot) and wait till spring to buy a chiller.

I've been in love with the idea of led's since they were still crap. . . they are def getting more powerful, but unfortunately they are not getting cheaper or more efficient. . . they are really not anymore efficient than CFL's but the ability to focus the spectrum is their biggest advantage. not wasting energy on non-relevant wavelengths.

I want one to add a veg capability to my clone box/fridge.

but yeah, you can get a lot of useful light without a lot of power. lots of benefits, and i bet res temps are definitely in there somewhere.

thats the cheap route, and one i wish i had taken just from a money prospective. . . but whats done is done and I will get use out of it for a long time so eh. still glad to have it.

lol sorry sayjak! i guess " Wheelo's 3rd run - Attack of the Holy Shoots" just wasnt catchy enough for me ;)

i dont think you got my question tho man.... wtf is that wheel thing??.. does that thing spin??? do i get to buy a vowel ? i mean wtf is goin on there?... if it DOES spin, how do the plants not fall out?! is it a hydroponic setup?..

and you said ALL OF THIS is under one tent?!?... is the tent the size of a small living room or what dude jesus.....

how ever i did get a much better grasp on whats goin on with your explanation of the 3 seperate areas! ha right on , nonetheless im here for the rest of the trip!

The Volksgarden has a surprisingly small footprint, actually. Google it and watch it in action.

whoa man that thing is SWEET!... do you have that housed in a tent tho??...

damn that thing is way cooler than what i was thinking.. i thought there was like a res in each little divit in the wheel or something... thats awesome and so efficient!1 you GOTTA fill that thing up bro! hell yeah

eh long day. conference tomorrow, and i'm presenting. anyways,

odor, i've become comfortable enough with this machine and have talked about it so much i forget that there are growers out there that don't know about it. lol, my bad.

yeah so if you youtube it there is one of a guy setting one up, and a couple of the owner talking about it and it's big bro the carousel. also there have been some journals in the past on other sites that posted maybe a pic or two about it, but maxx was the first on another site then here, then me. now there are a few here. so you can look around if you want or i can point you to them.

but feel free to ask anything, i like the sound of my own keyboard. lol

yeah so the wheel takes 3x3x2.5 inch rockwool cubes, they go into plastic "sleeves" or holders that slide into channels on the wheel. then the wheel spins, about 1 rotation every 45 minutes. one of these grows i might play with the speed, but i'll have to hack it somehow. it has a flood tray and a res with a pump, and because RW stays wet a long time I flood the tray once a day for 45 minutes so they all get dipped once a day. there are 16 channels and you can fit 5 block in each for a total of 80 plants. sog style, but wrapped around the light. the main benefit of this style is that every inch inside the wheel is pretty much a sweet spot, meaning it thinks that it is directly under the bulb. the downside is the taller they get, the less room they have between them and the light.

but I never follow directions, i play around and see what works, and try to get good results using new techniques. it's my nature.

so I am doing my own thing, instead of 60-80 main cola branches, i have 8 plants in there and i'm LST'ing them to the wall. . . now i think 8 wasn't enough, so i have 10-20 more in the works for a late addition. when the get in there, i will LST them, maybe give them a week of veg and finally go to flower.

I definitely don't want to go past Nov 1st in veg. that would mean a christmas harvest.

i have also increased the rooting size to compensate for the size of the plants, we'll see if it was needed at the end of the run when i break open the cubes.

also, i have a vid cam now so I ay give it a shot, and it would certainly illuminate some stuff for some people, only i don't want to post it on youtube or anything, i have to figure out where i can upload it safely. i wish i could upload it here.

I didn't get a mem card yet, so you guys are gonna have to wait. I can't record yet lol.

oh yeah, odor,

the tent is 4x8, on one side is the wheel and the other the scrog with a couple feet inbetween.

the clone box you see the clones shot in is a home made incubator. I rewired a freezer to operate off of a normal digital house thermostat. it has fuzzy logic and everything lol. so I can keep my clones/seedlings at exactly any temp i want. this helps a lot with my cloning. I may get an LED to put in ther if i want to veg out some moms. I have a megagarden ebb and flow table in it, but i don't use it because there isn't enough light in there at the moment.

how ever i did get a much better grasp on whats goin on with your explanation of the 3 seperate areas! ha right on , nonetheless im here for the rest of the trip!

hmm, well i din't mention the clone box when you posted this so i think there is a misunderstanding. 2 seperate areas.

the wheel, on the left of the tent, <4x4

the scrog on the right, <4x4.

the scrog is in a dirt mix, i think this is where you misunderstood,

****i have 7, 3.5 gal grow bags in the scrog.
****each one was filled half way up with "Super Soil", a heavy organic soil mix that i prepared that has all of the nutrients the plant will need for its entire life cycle.
****then I topped off the top half of each bag with atami hydro-mix with no nutes.
****As the plants have all the nutes for their lifecycle in the bags alread, its so easy to water and maintain because i only feed it plain water.

looking good though man. what ppm do you run in the wheel. it seems like alot of the plants have some nute burn, or am i just seeing something else?

hey weedy, i told you before that what you saw was just the wheel at work. . . but in addition to wheel curl

i have been getting some leave "wrinkling" due to pH fluctuations. . . I don't know why I am having pH problems, as i never really did before. its hard to keep it set. but it def isn't helping.

great updates WOF

Think maybe you should wrap a big zip tie around thos block of RW cubes to prevent them from breaking up over the cycle of the grow?

thanks Mcbuds,

actually, i doubt they're going anywhere.

the RW cubes are made to fit in the green sleeve right? and do you see how the sleeve goes a 1/4 inch above the slot in the side that fits into the channel? well a single RW cube comes maybe 1/8 inch into the wheel to keep the cube in place. . . so with the RW hanging out of the side like that, i had to push down the RW on that part like 1/4". even after i did that they put pressure on the wheel. see the crack in between the cubes? thats from the pressure on the outside. but i left them full size in th middle so they are being held in from that ledge. . . on top of that they just barely touch both of the sides of the tent when they turn (prob not good, but can't avoid it) and dont touch anything else so i dont really see them going anywhere.

I really wish i could figure out a way to cover most of it somehow to keep the light out, but not affect feeding.

i don't know McB, i don't know what advice anyone can give me, i just can't seem to get a vigorous root system in RW. i hope the bacteria help. so far i am not impressed with the root sturcture this grow either. only one week into the AN nutes though, so i will stay hopeful.

I am a smart guy, i have good meters, calibrated, and i know what and what not to do. I don't know why this eludes me. its frustrating when i can do it so easily in dirt.

maxximus did say once that the wheel was reported to minimize root structure somehow, and thats why he wanted even smaller cubes. i don't know about that though.

well, the GWS has rooted strong, and a few of the bigger better HS clones are showing some roots, so I am taking some pics and throwing any HS with roots into a single cube, and into the wheel.
here come a few pics.

ok, as promised,

here are the clones

here are the roots on one of the GWS. . . these girls are so healthy with these plugs. . . i like them way more than RW. i wish they made 3" cubes, lol.
