wow sorry to hear about the bugs man. I hope you got em dead good.

Your pics are damn nice though.

I dunno - looks like there's going to be some double parking going on very soon!

The resolution on your camera is bonkers, impresses me every time. Your plants look amazing too!

Sorry to hear about the gnats mate - these things sound like evil bastards, and reasonably common of late. Out of interest can they affect a DWC or is it only if there's soil present? I'm starting to think maybe I should order some stuff to have in reserve, just in case I get a problem?

Thanks Knight!
I think everyone should have something in their kit just in case Gnats show up.
They can get into your roots via your hydroton. They're so small they can get under enough to lay eggs.
So even people that grow with DWC or RDWC can be at risk.
And its the Larvae that you don't want, because they will feed on roots making it hard for the plant to uptake nutrients.
Then when it's too late you'll be left with munched roots that will begin to rot. Then it's either game over, or the plant's growth will come to a complete hault.
If you see them flying around your pots, chances are, they have or are in the process of, laying larvae in your medium.
Bastards!!

they comin on nice mate. porta scrogging def has its advantages!

Thanks mate, You said it!

There is no way I could have done what I did last night, with every plant tangled into a stationary scrog.
Porta scrog + 1!

sorry to hear about the gnats bro its easy to miss them I missed the thripes too. reps for the pics they look awesome!!:bravo:

I know right!
Those larvae are so small they're SO easy to miss.
From now on, I'm going to start taking preventative measures just like I do with PM.
Flush my medium with a treatment once every 2 weeks or so.

Re: Vick074-OG Kush last run in CocoSoil-CO2-1KHPS-5X5tent-with Porta Scrogs!? porta

Mosquito dunks are your friend. If the water you use can have one of these floating in it ahead of time, it will render them unable to eat, and they starve to death. Even if you see them after - they are no longer eating. If you keep this up, they'll be gone completely in relatively short order, especially if you are hitting them other ways as well. They are PH neutral, add zero PPMs and harmless to people and pets. They contain a bacteria called bacillus thuringiensis (BT) that is very targeted to just a select number of bugs (mosquitos, fungus gnats, etc.) but harmless to everything else. Easy Breezy! :goodluck:

SNS 203 from Sierra Natural Sciences, and Azamax are two other very good, organic and safe, pesticides that really do work and are effective against FG.

Oh, and holy moly you've been taking some amazing photos of your beautiful plants lately!!! :bravo:

Re: Vick074-OG Kush last run in CocoSoil-CO2-1KHPS-5X5tent-with Porta Scrogs!? porta

Sucks to hear about the gnat larvae in the roots?!! It is real good you caught it in time. I have Sierra Natural Science (SNS 203) in my nute arsenal just in case I have a problem like you had. It is a soil drench spay. It is designed to kill/repel fungus gnats, root aphids, thrips, shore flies and white flies. And it is a natural pesticide. The active ingredients are Clove oil, Rosemary oil and other secret stuff and they are 420mag sponsors. You definately know what you are doing by the way you reacted. Must have been real tough humping those big pots up and down those stairs.

Those plants still look as beautiful as ever!

:thumb:

Thanks CF!
I definitely have to get some of that SNS 203.
Heard nothing but good things about it, and it's natural!!
Which is more than I can say about the Sevin I used last night.
Sounds like it's some pretty heavy duty stuff. I wanted to treat them organically, but the Wilson Sevin was all I had on hand.
Planning on getting a rubbermade bin so I can catch a lot of water when flushing.
That way I can do all my flushing upstairs, and not have to "hump" my back!

Thinking out loud here: Wonder if the reason I have not seen buggers in me roots is because of the water chiller? 67f

Thank you very much X!

And congrats again on your wins buddy!:cheesygrinsmiley:

I had 3 dunks in each 5 gallon res. And have had at least 2 in there since you got me onto them a few months back.
I change them out for new ones every 2 weeks.
But when I noticed the larvae in my drip trays, the weird thing is most of them weren't dead. That's what had me trippin! So I thought, ok if I just washed all of these bastards out with my feed, there has got to be more in there doing damage.
So I reacted.
After all was said and done, there were no more Gnats flying around anywhere! And any larvae I saw were DEAD. :rip:
I might have gone a bit over kill with the "Sevin",
but the way I see it, better safe than sorry.
Will be picking up more dunks tomorrow and maintaining them in my res til the end.
Maybe the dunks I had in there before had run their course. In future I think I could also benefit from giving them one more day to dry out before the next feeding. Currently I feed say on a Monday, then don't feed again until Thursday. Or I'll pull back my feed of 6 gallons to 4.5 - 5 gals.

Thanks Bass!

Nuke those mother phuckers! Beeeeeautiful pictures! + Reps for your vigilence:cheesygrinsmiley:
:tokin:

Thanks Hoz!!
Hopefully the bomb I dropped on them last night will have every Gnat in the neighborhood scared shitless!

I'm pretty sure they can withstand the colder temps.
A few days ago, I noticed my res water pretty damn cold to the touch, so I went out and bought a cheapy floating thermometer at the aquarium store. And sure enough my water was 63f.
Too cold, so I moved my res buckets downstairs where they are a perfect 68f.
So that would mean the Gnats were right at home with me feeding them that cold water for the previous 4 feeds at 63f.

Thanks Vick. I hadn't even really considered or planned against bugs. Spider mites were a worry cos they sometimes infect my bonsai but I'm used to dealing with them and can spot them pretty quick. These gnats and thrips are a new one to me and more common than I realised - fungus gnats in particular seem to be popping up in a lot of grows. I'm going to order myself some mosquito dunks and sns now.

Is the general consensus to run them in your res as a preventative at all times, a bit like DM zone?

Yeah, like everyone says, "with bugs, it's not a question of if you get them, it's when"
Even the cleanest, most OCD growing pro's out there get bugs on occasion, just ask Xlr8!
Fungus Gnats are almost more popular than spider mites these days!! lol
Although some people have wet winters and some have dry ones.
It's the wet winter people that seem to have more problems with Gnats and PM. yay me!!.
I think it really comes down to finding that perfect balance between dry and wet. As we all know this can be a bit hard sometimes.
For myself this far along into flower, I don't have to worry too much about root develepment, because I'm not vegging anymore.
But if the roots are having a hard time up taking nutrients then my buds will suffer, and yield will be effected.
That's why I freaked out and hit em as hard as I did.
Fungus Gnats seem to be way more popular with people that grow in soil or Coco.
Also Air pots give those bastards 24/7 access to roots. Like an open parkade!
Airpots should have a sign on them that says, "Fungus Gnats Welcome! Free Parking for Larvae!"
So anyone using the combination of the 2 should be aware of the potential problems Fungus Gnats can pose in their grows.

Yes the dunks are meant to be put in your res as a preventative.
Just use some of the mrs. nylons or old socks. Put them in, and tie them off. (otherwise they'll break down into little chunkies in your res.)
Then just let them float around doing their thing to the water. Change them out for new ones every few weeks.
:cheesygrinsmiley:

edit: *Big props to Xlr8 for originally suggesting Mosquito dunks to me a few months ago.

Re: Vick074-OG Kush last run in CocoSoil-CO2-1KHPS-5X5tent-with Porta Scrogs!? porta

Yeah, I know wet winters. And wet springs, autumns and summers. But if we are lucky enough to get more than a week's worth of sun they ban hosepipes because we get a "drought"!

Mozzie dunks have been ordered and I'll run them from now on for prevention - thanks for the tips mate.

Sounds like you've got on top of yours and caught them early - I hope there's no long term damage and your back recovers: I imagine the last thing you needed was to be lugging pots after the big defol the other day

Thats some great pic's you got up there. Isn't a marco lens nice? I love the way a decent bud sparkles and smells. It's got to be the most photogenic plant there is, well maybe I'm bias. They are starting to look really nice Vic. I've had them gnats a time or two. They will find them weep holes in the bottom of your pots easy enough. I started seeing them when I started using smart pots. I drenched with gognats acouple time and gone gnats. I'm not sure what it will do in hydro but it even works as a spray to spray around the soil surface for maintance. Well I'm busy cutting some more kids off my OG tonight. I'm going to take 5 or 6 so I can get a newbie friend up and growing. Plants are looking great Vic. Keepem Green

Thanks brutha,
I most certainly agree, and am bias too.
macro is the cat's ass for MJ photography!

I think if I use these pots again, there will definitely be some mods made to the side holes.
Like patching them up with something that's still breathable, while keeping those mofo's out.
Like hockey tape, or medical tape.
And I WILL be adding, and maintaining a Gnat preventative to my flushes..

Nice of you to hook you're homie up with some of the good sheeeeet mon!
He'll be hooked for sure when he reaps those OG rewards.
I know I was.
