Well, kinda yes kinda no.

When I said plug into, I mean:

Make a junction box with a male plug on say a 3-4 ft cord that plugs into that wall dryer outlet.

Exiting the junction box is heavy ass wiring to another junction box with 4 x 220v outlets some 20 odd feet away near the rooms.

I would plug in each 220v timer, specifically this apollo 5 for each lite.

Issue is making the junction box(s) I aint no expert on this, that's for sure.

Hey Bass; I wouldn't worry about making a junction box, you'll be able to buy a 30A junction box for about £1 from any DIY or electrical store and it will be fully rated and safety tested

Sounds like you're describing a sort of extension cord. I'm saying to remove the female outlet. That outlet is in a box already, so just buy a cover for it. Then connect your new run (I think you said it was 20') to the wires in the old outlet box and run the wire to your new box. From the new box, you will need to junction off to your 4 outlets. I think you're on the right track, just get rid of using any plugs. Twisting together the wires with wire nuts will give you a better connection than a plug IMHO. The plug might be fine, but I don't like it when you're talking about using all 30A @240V.

I use these timers:

oldman is correct. Usually, red and black are the 2 hot wires and white and copper are common/ground. Not all 240 circuits will use the red wire though. My 2 240V circuits are only 3 wire. I ran 4 wire romex, but the outlets only use 3 wires. If it's a 3 wire 240V circuit, then black and white will be hot and the bare wire is the common/ground.

Good luck with the wiring. That dryer outlet can definitely be used. I'd like to see what you end up doing, but I sort of like to see how the grow rooms are built more than the plants

My grow rooms are just regular ole tents. 4x4 and 5x5. For the second tent (4x4), I'm going to drop 12-16 clones into 2L hempy under 685 watts of LED (true wattage draw). But that's only for 1 grow. After that grow it'll be the switch to 240v in both tents and 1k watts in 5x5 and MAYBE the 4x4 will have 1k watts HPS also, but possibly 685w led on 110 & 400w HPS on 240v. All depends on when I get some more equipment.

Both grow rooms will eventually be RDWC just like my 5x5 tent is now. *that's also the top link journal in my sig.* But I still need to buy another chiller, fans, filter, etc.

I spoke to Titan yesterday. Basically he suggested to just make a 240v junction block extension and use the 240v timers with lights rather than the apollo 11 which I was leaning towards.

So today I saw 3 prong 240v dryer extensions at the store. Next week I'll pick one of those up and make a really heavy duty extension-junction block with 240v plugs. I'll set it up with 4 plugs for later expansion.

Was thinking the porta scrog idea be ideal for individual oxypots. Obviously the growth rate of hydro would quickly fill those screens.

ok another question on my electrical dilemma. I measured the distance from the 240v dryer plug to approx location of where I would plug in lamps/timers for each room into a junction block. Distance was 30 feet.

It looks like 3 prong dryer cords are 10/3 gauge. Most are 4', 5', or 6' length. Like these: Dryer Cord from The Home Depot - Model HD

So I would wire above cord into a junction block. That block would exit roughly 25 feet where I would make another block with 4 x 240v outlets for the timers/lights.

Am I thinking right here and is 10 gauge heavy enough? Each plug would draw roughly 4.5 amps per 1000w digital ballast.

To run from the plug to the new location I would remove the plug and use solid wire to tie in.
I believe those cords use braided wire. They are harder to make good solid screw connections.

You are correct on the braided. But that's the short extension too. Here's a better picture, would this be an issue in making good solid connection? It doesn't appear so to me, but I know diddly about household wiring. Shop Whirlpool® 4-Foot 3-Wire 30-Amp Dryer Cord at Lowes.com

10g is a 30A wire. Don't try to use an extension cord. Remove the dryer outlet. Buy a 30' of 10g wire. It sounds like your dryer outlet is 10/3 (includes red wire), but what are your 240V outlets for the lights? Mine only use 10/2 wire. Buy the correct wire for your application.

Connect one end of that wire to the wires where the dryer outlet was. Run your wire up to your grow area into a new junction box. From that box, branch out to your outlets. In my case, I have 4 separate legs for each outlet. If your outlets have 2 sets of terminals, you may be able to daisy chain them.
