Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm Makes 3 - Perpetual 2000w

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

The velcro is a close but no cigar for me. I tried it. If you use too much you can't get the flap open, or the velcro ends up being stronger than the plastic and tears the plastic. If you use too little it still lets light through. If you make a really nice big flap with at least a foot or two of overlap - then a few squares of well placed velcro would do it great I think.

Another tip - if you're making a light flap - make sure you have black facing black if you want to block light. The white will bounce the light right out.

:nicethread::cool:

Have you torn a 12 mil reinforced crawl space liner? I might have to re-think this<G>, dang. And, thanks for the black on black tip... the light proof vent flaps might take some extra McGuyverin':grinjoint:

Wow! That sub is a lot bigger than I thought. You really have been busy. Thanks for the picture tour Papa. :nicethread:

Tarp Zippers, hmmmm...
That gives me something to noodle on for a while. Good tip, +rep ya when I can Bro.

Great Point! I almost went back and added that! No - I have only been using the 6mil panda.

I use velcro with a little strip of the 12mil sub flooring to back the zippers. It's just enough to block the light I think.

Really the prob with any adhesive system - including the zippers - is that the plastic films will stretch. Some a little faster than others - say a garbage bag vs 12mil roof liner - but in the end they all do. I've been happy with the zippers so far, but I am already starting to see some wear after only a few months. And when friends come over and try to unzip or zip they seem to be much rougher and more stressful on them. Treat them gently and they seem right. Again, depends if you have the space for overlap at each side of the doorway. If there's overlap I'd use a 18" flap w/Velcro. Would be easier than zipper.

:nicethread::smokin2::goodluck:

EDIT: PS: I have not bought a tent, just looked at them in the stores and read their manuals. There may be some subtle design things they incorporate to make it better. Also, some cloth helps immeasurably. When I've added a non-stretching cloth backing to stuff it makes any system better - zipper or velcro.

Gotta go watch Lakers - I'll be back later!

A few pics of the problem leaf and plant. This is as bad a sthe leaf got. I cut it off tonight. The rest of the plant is basically healthy again.

I would have paid for a tent, they seem pretty inexpensive for what they are, but never could find one to fit my peculiar needs.

Big flap seems like it might be the ticket. I've never liked those tarp zippers. They get balky on me after a while, and even lube stops working. The zipwall ones seem to do me better, and they come with a double bladed knife for cutting the slot, way better than a utility knife.

Suns looked good last night. They might make it a fight. Definitely have the talent. But, I've been a Laker fan since Minneapolis. A lot of Carolina boys have looked pretty good in gold... havin' Mitch at the helm doesn't hurt, either. Go Lakers:cheertwo:

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Wow! Nice! The grow space is very clean. I like it. Organized feels better doesn't it? ;)

About the Volde that died, was that from seed or from clone? I'm always too stoned to keep track of what's going on. I ask because I have seen clones die weeks after being rooted due to what I believe is an embolism. I think sometimes when we get sloppy cloning and let one suck air, the bubble can get hung up for long periods of time, and then break loose later to plug up some vital choke point and kill the plant. Just throwing ideas...

How do you like the digi ballast? I want to convert, but of course I hear an endless litany of complaints about RF interference, etc. I use digital equipment in there (like the PC I'm typing on now, which runs 24/7 in the veg room and is the household server). :)

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Lavendar, we use zipwall on remodels, but I never really checked to see if they block light. I'm betting you could put a strip of black plastic behind it.

I got some 2" wide heavy duty velcro I'm going try and make some tent flaps out... I'll let you know if it works :-)

yes, thank you, very interested....never know what will happen, so good to have repairs on hand....lavendar

good tips, yes, makes alot of sense....am thinking of maybe adding alittle in the other place ... havent decided yet, but would be good to have on hand for repairs if need be....thank you, lavendar:thankyou:

Before I start responding - these are all such great comments +Reps for everyone!

WoW Papa:cheertwo:

When you say you did a little work in there, I didn't think it would be total renovation! :cheertwo:

:bravo:

Heheh. And would you beileve I ended up moving the A/C back AGAIN!? The veg room is now spot on for temps - flower needs some help. Is fine, but I can't jack up the CO2 like I want.

Nice work man. What a busy bee you've been! Your SCRog is looking crazy man. I look into my crystal ball and forsee lots and lots of trimming in your future. lol

Thanks!!! Gonna throw some good pics next few minutes/hours. The pics are uploaded - coming in next posts... :bong:

We're totally on the same page on all that!!! Zipwall is good to know. I'll definitely remember that. Prolly the kind of thing where you get 2x as good a product for half the money than hydro store. My current #1 scam from the hydro guys is digital timers. I found exactly the same timers as EcoPlus. At hydro store - $25 - at Harbor Freight $10. When one buys 6 timers that's not pocket change. Assholes.

Man - big props for the embolism diagnosis. I've heard about them many times, but never experienced it - and I never would have thought of that. But I think you're spot on!

As far as the digi ballast - very mixed reaction. I love the weight. I hate the power sensitivity. You won't have that issue, and actually I don't anymore either now that I've distributed power better. So I guess they're nifty. And I don't think its interfered with my controller at all. Even when I was in the smaller sub and they were only a few feet apart. But I still think the magnetic ones are prolly more robust. Also, the added lumens is handy, but the dimmable part requires the smaller bulbs, so I haven't really taken advantage of that.

EDIT: One other gotcha - I have been unable to get them start reliably if they share a timer with anything else. Even a 435w T5 and a 400w Lumatek on a 1875w timer - the Lumatek fails to start about half the time. Put them on their own timers, same outlet - starts every time.

OK - now time for some good fun. I discovered I like taking pics with the room lights on and no HPS. DUUUUUHHHHH!!!! Nice going brainiac!:bravo:

So I think I forgot some from the other night - but I've got lots (LOTS!) more. Less room, and boring stuff - more PRON!!!!

Pics are uploaded, am smoking fattty, eating some Waffles with cannabutter and chocolate syrup for breakfast/pre-bedtime snack, and posting the pics here. Check back soon - good stuff methinks...

:peace::thankyou:

Pics!

:yahoo: - Finally to the stage where we start to get some pron!

All the tech stuff is usefull, and interesting sometimes - but let's face it the only reason to do it all is for the buds! So scrog buddage only this post. The Volde is getting close - she's gonna finish first as expected - max another week of nutes. The AK will likely come about a week after. Then the rest. And man I think the Utopia Haze is gonna be a winner for me. I also remain cautiously optimistic that this scrog will indeed yield 1g/w. I've never achieved 1g/w so I don't know what it should look like - but this is a shit ton more tops and large ones than I've ever grown under a single 600. Fingers crossed.

Butcher, I apologize, I seem to have lost the top I named after you in here somewhere!

This is the Volde. She looks sooo frigging cool to me. The calyxes just swell like they're in charge of the world. Other buds I imagine the convo something like polite Brits in a crowded train," Pardon me, excuse me, may I fit in another hair here and swell a little perhaps?" The Volde is more like this guy:

That is one fat top from the biggest Utopia Haze. Pretty sure it will weigh in at a solid oz or two. Believe it or not I think she has 4 like that!
scrog_uh_top.jpg

This is a top from another UH. This one's not bad, but you can see why I chose the other for the mom!
scrog61.jpg

4 Different strains. Too jumbled to point out each one, but they are AK-47, Jack Herer (I think), Utopia Haze and Volde.
scrog8.jpg

Its hard to tell in this pic, but that Volde running hrz in the middle is one very fat dense nug about 8" long.

OK - that gets the ball rolling ;)

Feel free to peruse my gallery if you need more of a fix. I will get more posted later, but my Breakfast of Champions is kicking in and I'm fading fast.

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Thanks, Horse!

K - more pics. Not necessarily the pron - but good stuff I think.

Our stars. The UH on left Volde on right. The embolism threw me for a loop. Wouldn't you know - I had two more suitable clones to put there, and tossed them a day after the transplant. Then the embolism showed the next day. So there are 7 UH and 5 Volde going.

uh_volde_veg_wk1.jpg

After all the work arranging A/Cs I had to move it back to the Veg room. I think this is as permanent as I get:

Not much of an update there. They are doing their thing.

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Wow, having to air condition... dang, I thought dehumidifying was a pain in the azz.

How does that unit work? Is it like a little heat pump inside the room?

Can you use the condensate water?

How many coconuts can a swallow carry?

Your setup is looking great as always dude! Is that part of an automobile ventilation system I see against the wall?

That was one of my better purchases. Kinda lucked out. That thing pulls more water out of the air than my 70l dehumidifier. And it cools great within its means. The only thing is that it only has one exhaust hose so it pulls air from inside the room, and exhausts the heat. Its the only part of my room that's not a "closed" system.

African or European?

Awesome pics Papa! You definitely got it going on! :welldone:

Next you'll need to install an elevator into the sub!

Heheheh. Its pretty nutty down there. But mellowing significantly. Of course now I gotta start the next phase of expansion - whatever that might be...

Your setup is looking great as always dude! Is that part of an automobile ventilation system I see against the wall?

That is the fan from an old stand up A/C that failed. I cannibalized it. That squirrel fan is from the top half of the unit, and works like a champ.

Thanks everyone for poking in. Good to see some Python fans as well. I don't know if Spamalot is still playing on Broadway, but I highly recommend it if it is and you're there. I saw it a year or two ago and it was HILARIOUS. Basically just a combination of a bunch of their best stuff rolled into the Search for the Holy Grail story. But they have things like "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from "Life of Brian." Anyways - great show.
