Don't write of the flowers on those cosmos just yet....wait a bit and I predict you'll see the best flowers yet.
But certainly using OC+ as a base nute is a perfectly sound idea......however from what I've been able to learn, the 18 6 12 formulation is pretty much perfect for our beloved plant. Perhaps a bit of P during the seedling stage for healthy roots....but not much else.
The colas on my plants are pretty large.....and that's with osmocote plus. Not bad.
The regular osmocote is 18-6-12, the OC+ is 15-9-12.
would it be better to use the regular without micros and add the micros?
That would sorta defeat the whole thing for me, as I want to be able to just add water.
Thanks for the info and clarification doc!
Now, if you were going to use OC+ and a good soil like FFOF, would you wait 2-3 weeks to add the OC+, or add it from the get-go?
The FFOF would be cut with at least 25% perlite, but do you think adding the OC+ at the beginning would make it too hot a mix for baby seedlings?

I'd germinate in smaller cups first....just FFOF and perlite.
Then I'd put the full amount of OC in the larger pots upon transplanting. This product won't burn your plants!
That is a very good question! FFOF does run on the hotter side.
Hey Doc the watering is one spot seems to be spot on.lol. done it about 4 or more watering and no problems at all, in fact i believe it help my PH flex from the peat moss from the sun shine mix. i believe now that 100% of the medium isn't getting wet the peat isn't effecting things too much. make sense to u?
OK, but you know I like to germinate my seeds in their final containers as long as they are going to be no larger than 3-gal, so the question stands .
the more I'm learning about soils and such, the more I like that Sunshine #4!
The peat tends to acidify, while the dolomite lime tends to keep the Ph from dropping too low....in other words you've got a powerful buffer there.
I'm surprised pH is even an issue for you. What's the pH of your water? I would think that if it was anything between 5.5 and 8.5 you wouldn't need to worry about it.
But watering in one spot for soiless mixes is definitely the way to go! The plants get to drink all that water at the bottom.....and the air roots never get drowned. Plants are happy that way.
SS#4 is a great medium, Ive used its for a long time. I would add some lime & perlite to it, but as is its great. its likes to be feed at a PH of 6.0 i tried the 5.8 and it didnt like it the same thing my friend noticed also. the peat moss will drop the PH. adding lime will help though. buts its a clean mix for sure. 6.0 is the way to go for sure.
Well then.....mix up the soil in the lower half of the pot with the OC+. And in the upper half, just use the FFOF without any OC.
That way, by the time the roots get down there, the plant will be able to handle the nutes.
However, I'm not sure a whole lot of nutes will come out of those prills until the soils NPK is used up a bit......you'll grow legendary plants, SS.
You're going to LOVE the OC +
Sounds like a good idea, but it also makes sense that the prills wouldn't leach much until the soil is somewhat depleted.
Thanks man!
BTW, you may be right about the flowers on the cosmos. There are quite a few buds forming up, but they are currently hiding behind the saucer-sized leaves grown by the OC+, lol.
if the peat is going to drop the pH, why water with 6.0? Why not water with tap water and let the medium do what it's designed to do?
Also, lime is pre-added to the mix....why do you feel you must add more?
I've not used SS#4 yet, but I'm debating between using it and FFOF on my next grow. I'd love to hear your thoughts on why you're lower the pH of your water, etc.
you have to remember i have a tone of perlite mixed in maybe 4 cups of perlite to 1 cup of sun shine so the peat doesnt effect it as much, so 6.0 watered in one spot give me around 5.8 of run off or so. works great. now when its just SS#4 i water around 6.5 or higher and it dose just fine. if you add lime it will balance the PH to a more neutral area and you dont have to compensate for the ph. my friend runs his around 7.0 and has no trouble. but in my case i tried different ph's 6.5,6.3,6.0.5.8 and had problems until i hit 6.0 and their very happy. i use tap water also with the same filter you have.
No I have used FFOF before also and i personally didnt like it. i know its the most bought soil, but i had nothing but trouble and i dont like food in my soil i like to add it myself. some real good soil was Bitanicare's soil. i liked that one allot. had food but was real learn and didnt burn my baby clones. but SS#4 is the best IMO
Doc,
Sorry to hear about the watering problem. Looks like most everything's recovering well.
Good to hear the smoke report on the un-lucky queen is positive.
I'd like to ask you a question. Should I be concerned that the runoff from my buckets is still up over 7 pH? I've been careful to make sure that everything I've given the plants is in the 5.6 - 5.8 range since Monday. I read your post (I think) to HorseBadOrtiz saying not to be concerned about the pH of runoff from hempys. I'd like to understand why it wants to go up so much.
Thanks a lot for your help and good luck!
