I started the LST on Maria and Camila yesterday, securing them to the net and pulling them toward the corner. Only Luisa (front-left) wasn't quite tall enough yet. She'll be there soon.

I also noticed that all of the new growth is three-fingered. I guess they haven't fully re-vegged yet after all. I'm hoping a few weeks at 20/4 will set them straight.

Back in the beginning of May when I was starting my last grow in the RDWC, @bluter talked me into wanting a water chiller:laughtwo: I looked into them and found the one I wanted: an Active Aqua 1/4hp water chiller. I found it on Amazon for around $625. It was more than some others but it had really good reviews really nice features. I thought about it for a couple of days and finally decided to get one. However, by that time it was no longer available:(

Oh well, I put it in my 'buy later' and figured it would be back in a few days. It took a month to come back in stock, and now it was $750. By then my res temps were back in the lower 70s so I figured I'd wait for the price to go down. Then it went back out of stock and came back at $800. Then out and back for $950:eek:

I've been kicking myself for about a month now for not getting it. Three things happened this week, though.
#1 - I just started a new grow. The temps are always highest at the beginning of the grow, and this week I measured the res temp at 78f!
#2 - My 29th wedding anniversary is next weekend and wife keeps asking me what I want (she already has her present  )
#3 - The chiller came back in stock on the 'zon showing 1 available at $625!

That sucker was on my Discover within a minute:yahoo: Today, a couple days earlier than expected, my new chiller arrived!

20230909_132629.jpg

It came in one piece, with two sets of connectors, some hose clamps, an extra fuse, and the instructions on top.

20230909_132955.jpg
For now, I'll be using the pump I use to drain the RDWC for the chiller. I connected the correct size fittings, hand tightening them firmly. Then I connected the pump and output hose and filled a bucket for a test. The only tool I needed was a screwdriver for the hose clamps.
20230909_135000.jpg

I ran the pump for about 5 minutes, flushing it out really well. Then I played around with it, cooling my well water from 63f to 55f in a few minutes. I also calibrated the temperature, which was 1.5f off compared to my digital thermometer.

Then I emptied the first bucket and ran a H2O2 mixture through it for about 1/2 an hour. Then I emptied that out and flushed it out with a bucket of fresh water.

Then it was just a matter of finding a decent place for it. There isn't a lot of room on the left side of the 5x5, but I wedged it in there right behind the res. I drilled a couple of holes in the res lid for the input & output hoses and a notch in the side for the pump power cord. I ended up putting a fan over in that corner too, to recycle the air around the chiller.

I set the chiller for 68f with a 2f variance. It will chill down to 68f and turn off, turning back on at 70f. I turned it on 'turbo' mode which has a two hour timer. When I left, the res was at 76f.
20230909_144916.jpg

When I came back two hours later the res was sitting right at 69f.
20230909_174739.jpg

I expected it to heat up the basement a little, but since the A/C ducting runs through the basements it's always pretty cool. If it does heat up the basement, I'm fine with the tent heating up to the mid 80s as long as the roots stay nice and cool :)

It's hard to believe these girls have only been in the RDWC for 17 days. They still have some big one and three fingered leaves on top, but I'm seeing more five-fingered leaves coming out with the new growth.

Meanwhile, you can't even see the main stem on these girls. It's like they're wearing hula skirts. There is a tight ring of leaves and branches down there.

These girls are vegging very quickly. I can already see them reacting to having the tops LST'ed to the corner with the lower growth going crazy. They're growing huge leaves and getting super bushy like they're in some Colombian rainforest :) I'm updating the LST every day now, moving it out to the new node.

I've been picking off suckers and some lower growth here and there, but this week I'll get serious about cleaning them up. At the same time I'll be LSTing any lower growth that gets above the net. Is it crazy to think I'll be flipping to 12/12 by day# 25-30?

They look really nice. I think yours are bigger.

They look really nice. I think yours are bigger.
A little bit, but mine were in the RDWC 3 days before yours were. The biggest difference I see is the huge rainforest-type leaves on mine. They're all looking really good, though :)

Fill net, flip plants!
I'm afraid if I fill the net before flipping I'll outgrow the tent. At the rate they're growing I may be flipping at the end of this week.
Once you strip everything off under the net they'll fill it a lot faster. :zoom:
So, why was I up at 3:30am on a Sunday morning? Certainly not because I woke up thinking about these girls and how much they needed to get cleaned up ;) Why hadn't I cleaned them up yet? Why was I letting them waste their energy on those skirts? I laid there for about 1/2 an hour trying to get back to sleep, but no good. And since these girls wake up at 4am, I decided what the hell.

I can't get rid of everything under the net (yet) but I got rid of their 'skirts', the ring of leaves around the stem. I also removed more suckers and some other smaller growth on the inside. I started with Camila (back-left). Here's a before & after:

I did all four in a similar fashion, removing the skirts so I could see the main stem and cleaning them up in the middle. I also removed a few of the big fans that were under other fans. I updated the LST on a couple of them, they had already grown a new node!

Did I remove enough? Well, of course not. I'll continue plucking daily throughout veg, trying to keep the bottoms and middles clean. This is going to be a busy week with these girls as the lower nodes come through the net. There's already a few that need to be tied down. Good thing I just got more garden wire :)

Don't you hate it when you wake up in the middle of the night, just enough so that the brain locks onto an idea and the sleep is finished. :hmmmm: :( Did you go back to sleep afterwards, or were you up for the count? 😮
I will wait a while to clean up underneath. As long as the light is getting to it, I leave it alone.:) I need to do some clean up on the Golden Tiger as lots of it are always in the shade now. I've got more time on the Colombian Gold, Lot's of light being reflected off the pvc tray cover.:):bong:

Oh, I was up. I had over 5hrs of sleep which should be enough for an old man like me. I still prefer 8, though :)

I couldn't see the main stem of any of them there were so many little clone leaves. After the last grow where I let them go a bit wild, I'll be cleaning these girls up frequently this time.

I've been topping off the reservoir with full-strength MC (6g/G) and the PPMs continue to go down. Today, they were 3 gallons down and below 600PPM. So, I bumped them up a level with 50g MC. That should put them up around 700ppm. I'm shooting for 1000ppm before flower.

Of course, now that I have a chiller for the res the temps in the tent have been hovering around 76f. So I increased the @VIVOSUN VSFD6500 to 75% today and raised it up a bit so that they're all getting around 40 DLI. Now it's reading around 82f in the tent, much better for these Colombian girls.

They're in their exponential growth phase. As the roots get more established and they get more leaves the growth is just exploding. Yesterday I left them alone, even though they were getting bushy.

Today they were huge, several inches above the net and super bushy. I felt like they were laughing at me and showing no respect for the net at all. So, I decided it was time to clean them up and really start LST. I started with Camila in the back-left corner. I removed most of the branches below the net, and any branch that had a branch growing the same way above it. I also removed a lot of the sub-branches, especially the smaller ones near the middle. Then I LST'ed her branches to the net using small pieces of garden wire. I forgot to take before pictures, but here she is afterward next to her sisters.

Then I did the rest of them. When in doubt, I removed the branch. I took off a lot of one and three-fingered leaves, too. I'm seeing a lot of five-fingered new growth, and even a few seven-fingered leaves. I'm glad, too, because I really want all five+ fingered leaves before I flip to 12/12. Right now they look almost empty, but by tomorrow they'll be full again. My plan is to flip to 12/12 when the net is 1/2 full. If they keep growing this way it looks like I may be flipping by the end of this week.

Excellent prep work in there LKA! It's all starting to come together. 👀
Thanks Shed. I'm trying not to let these girls get too far ahead of me ;)

Can't wait to see how fast they fill back in. I wonder if they'll grow even faster when they start stretching :hmmmm:
I know, they're growing so quickly. Half of me wants to flip to 12/12 now, and the other half wants them to grow a few more five and seven-fingered leaves first. Luckily they still have a bit of room in the 5x5.

After the defoliation and LST yesterday afternoon, these girls are filling back in quickly.

So I updated any LST that needed updating and picked some more leaves, mostly those large one and three-fingered leaves. I'm using garden wire to attach the branches to the net. Mostly just little pieces of wire fashioned into an open chain link.

Then I use these to attach the branches to the net.

For a lot of the LST update, I just had to slide the link further down the branch & net. Taking them off and putting them back on is easy enough, too.

I'll be updating the LST daily now for the next couple of weeks, along with constant plucking. I really want to get rid of the one and three fingered leaves before flipping to 12/12. Fortunately, all the new growth is five or seven fingered leaves. At the rate these girls are going, it still looks like I'll be flipping very soon.

That is something to get your plants to accept 40dli in veg .

Great job.

Thanks Smokey. For lighting levels I'm using this site as a guide. It has you going up to 45DLI in veg without co2 (55 with co2) for photoperiods.
Screenshot 2023-09-13 111253.png

Now, technically these clones are only starting their third week in the RDWC. They were in the cloner for two weeks, though, so I'm seeing how much light they can take. I started them in the RDWC at 20 DLI, moved it up to 32 DLI for the second week and now up to 40 DLI. I also bumped the res up to 700 PPM (1.4EC).

I use a SpotOn meter which has dli incorporated.
23 dli is about the max I can push without my plants turning into huge leaf protection mode.
Now put some flower on there and it’s a different story.

Good luck with your grow.
