After 24 hours with the light @ 100% and the exhaust on high to dry everything out, yesterday I filled up the RDWC. I went with 152g MC for 45G of water, or about 3.4g/G. I also put in about 10ml of pH down (due to alkalinity in my well water). That should be close, and I'll adjust daily until I am at around 5.8pH.
CG tracker.png
I started the SEEDLING mode on the @VIVOSUN SGS. Together with the humidifier in the tent, this should keep these girls at around .8-1.0 VPD. Once the roots hit the water, I'll lower the RH to around 1.0-1.2 VPD.

I also set up a table in the tent and put the cloner in there. I've been fiddling with the AeroGarden trying to keep the light on as close to 24/0 as possible. It looks like it worked, I kept them from going into flower. Now that they're in the tent at 20/4 they should continue to veg. The VSFD6500 is at 30% on seedling mode, giving the clones about 15DLI.

Today I put the best four clones in the RDWC. All of the clones had several roots at least 6". For each site, I filled the netpot about halfway with rocks. Then I coated the roots in @DYNOMYCO and spread them out horizontally. Then I filled in the rest of the netpot with rocks.

Finally, I covered the top with mylar film. Sure, it's a PITA and it takes longer than putting the clones in the netpot but it does help keep any light out of the res It also helps keep the res cooler before the canopy covers it.

It will take a couple of days for the roots to reach down into the res. Once that happens these girls will really start growing!

Yeah, that's a downside, but it might be a homerun too. :cheesygrinsmiley::bong:

I think you're closest to me geographically.:hmmmm:
Well, I have about a half dozen more clones if you can pick them up! Otherwise, I'll put them in a 4" pot with FFHF and I'm sure I'll find someone to take them ;)
Damn you clean up nicely. :) Great success with the clones and congrats on the new light...can't wait to see how full the tent gets this time!
Thanks Shed.
Any bets on whether the back left corner is a runt even with clones? :cheesygrinsmiley:
I sure hope not. I made sure the clone I put back there was a good one, at least as good as the others. If it happens again, I'll need to look closer at that corner (light/RDWC/airflow).

The first week in the RDWC is all about getting roots in water. Since all of the clones had over 6" of roots when I put them in, I could have just dangled them in the water from the start. Instead, I left them around halfway down the netpot so they had to find their own way to the water. I find I get a lot more lateral rooting this way, instead of one big taproot down the middle. Does it help in the long run? I don't know, but I like the idea of the roots having to find their own way instead of being force-fed. At worse it adds a couple of days.

In this case roots were coming out of the side of the netpots on the first day. Today, on day# 5, they all have great lateral rooting and roots in solution. The new growth is green and healthy and they all look ready to get moving. They're still skinny little things right now, but I expect that to change quickly.

I realized today that these girls need names now (I hate referring to back-left etc). I'll get labels on the buckets soon, but meet Maria (Front-left), Luisa (Front-right) , Camila (back-left) & Sofia (back-right) - My Colombian Gold beauties!

I increased the @VIVOSUN VSFD6500 from 30% to 45% yesterday, going from about 15DLI to about 25DLI. This also increased the temperature in the tent a couple of degrees. The humidifier is keeping the RH at a steady 65%, so the increased temperature raised the VPD a bit. With roots in water, the higher VPD will encourage these girls to drink from their roots instead of their leaves. Time for them to start drinking more nutes.
Screenshot_20230830_113509.jpg
At the end of their first week in the RDWC, the res hasn't changed much. That should change in the next week as they really start drinking.
CG Tracker.png

They all got nametags on their buckets today. One week in and they all have roots in the res and a couple of new nodes. I'll let them get a couple more nodes before topping them. As they get their roots established and a few more leaves their growth increases exponentially. In other words, these girls are ready to get BUSY!

I loaded my four in the flood and drain this afternoon. :) The day they were put in the diy DWC it was already loaded with Early Growth nute concentration and they seem to like it. :) So, not nute sensitive at the moment. :) The flood and drain reservoir is loaded at the same concentration. I've got the light at 25"/63.5cm above the rray cover @200w measuring 35K lux at the tray cover. :bong:

I'm at 24" @ 50% measuring 35 DLI (I'll get the lux next time, but we'll be different because I'm on a 20/4 schedule right now).

The RDWC reservoir is staying nice and stable. It was finally down a gallon yesterday, showing that these girls are starting to drink. The res was down in PPMs, too, showing they're hungry as well. I topped off with a gallon of water with 6g MC. I'll keep topping off at 6g/G until the PPMs level off or until the get to 2 EC.

The mother was in transition when these clones were taken but the 20/4 schedule since has convinced everyone to stay in veg. They're all fully sexually mature and throwing hairs everywhere. They all have nice roots established in the res and big fat DWC leaves.

Yesterday I started the VEG stage of the Vivosun recipe. It raised the VPD slightly and bumped the VSFD6500 up to 50% power in VEG mode. I was going to raise the light mode, but I like where the temperature is in the tent for now. Instead, I lowered the light to 24" away, giving these girls 35 DLI. They shouldn't be able to get above 40 DLI before I tie them back down.

I installed the scrog net 7" above the buckets. This gives me enough room to work under the net if needed. For the past two grows, I've tried to keep everything under the net until it was 3/4 full. This time I'll be using the net a little differently. I'll let the branches grow above the net then use the net as a LST point to tie them back down. Instead of topping, I'll LST all the tops to the nearest corner of the tent. I'll be pruning much more frequently as well.

I started with Sofia yesterday. First I attached her main stem to the net above her. This will help keep her straight in the 8" netpots.

Then I used a piece of wire to bend her toward the corner. Just a little bend for now, but I'll update it every day.

I know these girls are going to do some stretching. The tent is 80" tall and I can get the light to within 6" of the top, giving me 74" of usable space.

The RDWC buckets are 19" and the net is installed 7" above that, taking 26" from the bottom of the tent. That leaves 48" of usable space.

The light is 24" away right now, leaving me only 2ft for stretch. I could bring the light to within 12" (and dim if needed) and get 36" of space. Still, I only have 2-3 feet of space left after the net is full. So as soon as the net is 1/2 full I'll flip to flower. I'll fill the rest of the net during the transition and early flower, trying to keep them at net level for as long as possible.

The goal is to not let anything get more than an inch or two above the net. At this point they can grow a node every day or more, so I'll need to keep on top of them daily or they'll go wild in there.

Looking good!! How important do you feel VPD? Mine sometimes hits 1.8 ish when my humidity is low
Thanks Tim. I think understanding VPD is more important than maintaining a specific VPD. Knowing that when the VPD is lower the plants will drink and respire less and when the VPD is higher the plants drink and respire more, you may need to use a slightly lower nutrient level with a higher VPD to keep them from getting too much nutrients. Are they drinking a lot?

Keeping a close eye in there is a great idea given how they're taking off!
It's been a while since I've done clones, it really does skip a couple of weeks up front. Not even two weeks and these girls are moving!
And I'm rooting for the back left corner given that tent's history. :cheesygrinsmiley:
Camila (back-left) looks great right now. If anything, I'd say Luisa (front-right) is the smallest right now. Not that there's that much difference.

That sounds like a plan. The breeder description mentioned wide node spacing in stretch, let's hope so. That seems the best time to make them go horizontal.
I may flip before 50% full and hope to use that stretch to fill the rest of the horizontal 1st screen and still have enough to make it past the 2nd screen. :hmmmm: :)

Yes, when I have had high VPD they were drinking g alot

Yes, when I have had high VPD they were drinking g alot
So the danger is that if you are feeding them salts they'll take in more nutrients as they drink more water and respire more. It's easy to overfeed and burn plants when you have a high VPD. As long as you know this, though, you just lower the nutrients if you start to see the tips burning. You should have no problem growing in a high VPD environment and, as @Buds Buddy will tell you, you might even get better growth.

I usually shoot for a higher VPD in RDWC because I know the RH near the buckets is quite a bit higher.

I'm thinking by the time I get the tops to the corner it will be time to flip, if not sooner. Right now I'm just watching them grow and hoping for more fingers on those leaves ;)

You shouldn't have any problem filling that tent in 30 days or less in rdwc.
I totally agree with you Buds, especially with clones. They're only at day# 14 now and they have their roots well established and lots of big leaves. Now is when I'll start seeing exponential growth.
