The Perpetual Healing Garden - SweetSue's Joyful Return

B A R,
It is a strange plant. Even the small dime sized leaves are drying and falling out of the buds. The buds keep growing but there is not any real bud swelling going on. It is still taking up about a gallon plus of water a day.

I have a gap coming up in about six weeks that I am hoping to fix with some extra plants from cloning. I put a 16" SnS into flower six days ago. That was the largest young plant I had. I have an extra Kosher Kush that needs some trimming and time but it is going in soon. The KK mother never made it to flower (long story) so it is a new strain for me. I don't really know what to expect from either plant. It should be fun.

Over on your thread I talked about lights some. The eight tube T5HO lost half of it's lights so I bought a 1200W COB and have been using it for about ten days. I also moved a 400WHPS into the main vege area. I should have done both long ago.

It is my first LED and I don't know Jack really. The plants are happy so, party on I suppose.

The instructions say 3 to 3.5 feet above the plants. What do you think? I don't have a par meter. I do have a foot candle one. At 24" I get 1000FC with the HPS and 3000 with the LED. Now, when things get a little too tall in the flower room there may be as high as 10,000 or more with heat being the main issue. Where is the upper limit with LED light.

Reason: Too many Bob's running around here. Anyone wanna go by Will??

I'm not sure about that Heirloom. Dr Will just isn't as funny of course. Now Dr John Jacob Jinglehimer Shmidtz. That could work. His name is my name too you know. :thumb:

On the seed front, to play devils advocate, lets say an expensive female seed costs me $10. If it comes from a great breeder that has done extensive work to be sure it is stable and will produce, I am satisfied. I spend more on light, soil, space, time etc than I do on that one seed. Would I like them to be cheaper, sure. But when I have purchased cheap seeds, often the product has been less than fantastic. If genetics are one of the top influences of a good crop, then seeds aren't really that expensive.

It reminds me of yeast in brewing. Easy to do cheaply but it will really influence the taste of the beer. Buying a $10 pack of yeast for 2 cases of beer seems like a lot until you taste it.

Don't get me wrong. I thrash against this everytime I do an order (which there is a window in the background I can see right now with a ready cart) and it sucks to spend that kinda money on seeds. But dang, like a kid in a candy store I am and it is the best candy store ever.

I can remember growing mexican brick weed seeds out in the early 90s when we couldn't get anything else. We would have paid anything in those days to get these genetics.

Boy, I hear you on the yeast. Price is why I started a yeast bank of my own. Well, restarted. I had 12 strains banked when I lived in San Diego. Had to give it up for a cross country move.

Pure glycerin, distilled water, yeast nutes and of course fresh washed yeast cake in mixed and 20ml glass vials stored deeeeeep in the freezer. Gently bring it up to temp then make a starter wort.

Price also drove me to buy colloidal silver.

And now back to the SweetSue grow show!

:laughtwo: I count on you guys to keep it interesting, and you manage to do a damned fine job of it. :circle-of-love:

I was lost at the closet. Hard to believe you can spend so much time staring closely at six little seedlings. I think I was standing there a good 30 minutes when I snapped out of it. LOL!

Hahaha I do the old grow and dream stare too hahaha I usually get hit by a fan or burnt by a bare bulb and it snaps me out of dream mode and into where is the bong mode hahaha

Other than the first 2 plants I ever grew I've used nothing but LEDs during bloom so I can't compare them to anything else. As far as distance goes I never got into the science of all that par and whatnot, I just keep them high enough for the footprint to cover the whole tent and use a little common sense to keep the plants from touching them. Unlike what I've read about HPs, LEDs won't fry your plants unless there's no air flow or temps are out of the ball park.

Some of these other guys could probably give you better or more precise advice.

:ciao: Bob aka Dr John Jacob Jinglehimer Shmidtz...

Went to high school with a guy named Eugene Jugginhimer.. I'm serious, No bullcrap.
We always called him by his full name. LOL

I went to college with a young lady named "Rosebud Garden". Her daddy was a preacher. I don't think some people think about those names.

Canyon/BAR

My experience with getting my new tents and new LEDs to 'run' where I want them.

I have two 27x27x60ish mars tents. Each has a marsII 400 and two small cfl's for light....and heat. These are my first LEDs.

I run a clip on fan in the top of the tents pointing down between 50 and 60 degrees, and across the tent at the opposite corner with the specific purpose of blending the warmer air in the top with relatively cooler air below. With another clip fan blowing between the light surface and the canopy. I shoot for 86 degrees in the tents. The cfl's are more or less for heat, with the added bonus of light when they're on. The marsII 400 simply doesn't make enough heat when only vegging. The cfl's run through a hydrofarm seedling mat controller. Off at 86, on at 83 IIRC. That controller is plugged into the mars light, so when it's lights off I'm not heating with light!! For humidity I run an intake fan through a de-humidistat, Broan model DH100W. For cooling (and eventual night time heating) I use an auto heat/cool house thermostat, Honeywell model RTH5100b which triggers the same intake fan as the de-humidistat. Won't go into the wiring and relays involved. The intake fan duct blows right on the tent top fan, which then blends and forces air lower to the canopy fan.

I set my probes a couple inches above the highest canopy point.

Now on light spacing, finally. Temp management at the canopy matters big time, obviously, which is why I typed all that above and have gone through the trouble of automation. You can count on different strains having different tolerances to both heat and PAR. You have to feel it out...trial and unfortunate occasional error. They only make recommendations, there's no one size fits all. Each setup is unique and the fine tuning is a little different. Even identical setups in the same room can exhibit slightly different characteristics.

I recently left one tent alone for several days and came back to find one plant was a little less than 8" away from the glass. I think they recommend 18" for the 400. She was fine, but she was somewhat shading some areas that would otherwise have received full light. So I keep a minimum 14", and adjust up to 18-20" when needed.

For clones or seedlings I am running the light all the way to the top, as far as possible from the babies.

In conclusion I think it can be summed up as...it's a balancing act between temp, PAR, plant tolerances and required area of light coverage. Only you can find that balance in your system. Be sure to let us know your results!! If your plants are happy, party on as you say, Canyon.

Whew. Apparently the CCO dose made me feel good, lol. Hope my vague guidance, or ramblings, helps in some way.

:thankyou:Heirloom

Ain't that the truth.
And on that note I am running out of stash and my missus is gonna have to get some from outside the home probably staring in mid March. Not a problem but disappointing. I figure harvest end of may if I am lucky. Lesson learned.

This one's a real challenge for me. I have a tolerance on the order of at least two grams a day. Now I'm growing for someone else too. Matching production to demand is proving to be more difficult than expected. I only have so many brownie batches left. I may just go without again. My black market is disappointing.

Yes Heirloom. :thankyou:

Understandable Sue. It's a waste of time throwing our money down that black hole of most street weed after smoking our own. Back in the day homegrown use to translate into mediocre but wow, have we changed that stigma. I wish I could fax you a 1/2 oz.

By the way, will you be my Valentines? We have until 7pm EST when my lady friend gets here; If you've already accepted someone else's offer I'll understand. Everyone needs to be someone's Valentines.

:Love: :circle-of-love: Happy Valentine's Day :circle-of-love: :Love:

"So Susan" you ask, "what exactly are you growing?"

I'm glad you asked. There've been a couple glitches, but I'm hoping to make a full recovery.

The auto tent

image7241.jpeg

The photo tent. Still waiting on Carnival to make an appearance. This is the second seed I planted.

image7242.jpeg

The tiny closet had only one occupant, and I wanted to try two under the Timber Vero240 LED panel I won, which is being shipped as we speak, so I dropped a seed in water.

image7243.jpeg

That gave me two for the Tiny Closet. It pleases me that the light was a prize from a site sponsor, one of the seeds is a prize from another site sponsor and the Dark Devil Auto was a gift from an admirer. This entire part of the grow is overflowing with joy and gratitude. It should be interesting.

image7244.jpeg

A closer look at the specimens.

The Auto tent:

* Med GOM 1.0 auto
- quick finish (8 wks, seed to harvest)
- high CBD
- good for relief of pain, psyche symptoms, and inflammation
- citrus aroma with spicy undertones (Mmmmmm.......)

* Fantasmo Express (aka auto OG Ghost Train Haze) I wasn't aware of the a.k.a., but how appropriate.
- the most Sativa dominant plant offered by Mephisto Genetics
- finishes around 75 days

* Auto Jack Herer
- sativa dominant (50%)
- finishes around 75-80 days
- One of my favorite smokes from my previous grow. I'd like to see this one grow bigger.

The Photo tent:

* CBD Critical Mass
- 80% Indica, 20% sativa
- ratio of THC:CBD is 1:1 - 1:2
- for pain, depression, stress, insomnia, inflammation
- flowers for two months

* CBD Critical Cure
- highly recommended for my daughter by Cajun
- for stress, depression, pain, nausea, inflammation
- 8% CBD, 5% THC
- flowers for two months

*Carnival
- A proven winner. Around 20+ THC
- Sativa dominant (90%)
- will flower the longest

The Tiny Closet:

*Dark Devil Auto
- For the beauty of the plant and the zippy, almost hallucinogenic high. My favorite addictive strain. There's just something about them.

* Fast and Vast Auto
- 80% indica, 20% sativa
- THC 18-20%
- "The entire plant is covered in resin." I read that and thought "Hell yeah! More oil!"
- The high is from giggles to a relaxed stone. I can deal with that.

That's my lineup. Now, I have some errands to run in this rediculous cold that may make me decide to have an early dinner out with a view of the river, just to warm up before I walk home.

Then again, checking out the weather app, it's only 14 degrees out there! I don't think anything's that important. Tomorrow will be sloppy but 37 degrees instead of 14. A veritable heat wave. :laughtwo: That means I get to follow through on my plan to get Dale's stuff boxed up today so I have room to put up the tents.

Spread that joy far and wide guys. Grab all the hugs you can on this beautiful Valentine's Day.

Don't forget Suzy!! :)

Seriously. I know this doesn't help right at the moment, but by setting yourself up with a perpetual garden you will be able to have a harvest every 2-4 weeks if you get your cycle down. Pick your 2 favorite photo strains you have started, and put them at 12/12 today. Start 2 more of those seeds now also. That is sort of what I did with my Blue Blood and my Primo Purple when I realized I could get a second tent set up. I put them straight to 12/12 to get a harvest asap. In 4 weeks, you can throw something else into the flower tent. Eventually you will have things vegging for 6-8 weeks. I have 5 plant in flower right now that have all had 6-8 weeks of veg time. I am hoping for 3-4 oz / plant (I don't think that is unrealistic based on past results. So if I harvest every 2 weeks or so, I should have 6-8 oz / month. That is the plan anyway. :) :peace:

Suzy's looking mighty fine supergroomer. I started with all these autos because they'll finish up within 2 1/2 months. If I have any dry time it won't be for very long. My plan is to get a perpetual started so that things are clicking along for a harvest at least once a month. Although, you make a compelling case. Once I get a Carnival up I could throw it and the Critical Mass into a 12/12 tent and start the next ones. Cuts my potential dry time down significantly. :hmmmm: Not a bad idea.

I hear you B A R. You suggested the same thing yesterday. See? I really do listen. :laughtwo:

B A R, Heirloom,
Thanks guys, this all helps.

I was aware that there was a need to keep temps up around 80 to 85. I get daily and seasonal swings that are less than ideal. On average, this time of year, the veg. room runs around 70 to 80 this time of year. If I go much higher the flower room is too hot. (It is in the veg. room.)In the winter the humidity runs between 30 and 45% with two humidifiers running in the veg. room. The flower room is probably half that with the lights on.

As it is I have the LED light at about 28" above the closest plant. Guessomating, I should be good with some safety at 24-26" based on how you are using the Mars 400. The plant that is directly under it is one of about a dozen I came close to killing last year. I need established clones from it but the plant is not going to do much. My thinking is let it grow into the light and watch.

I have a basic 'Sentinel' controller I am only using as a thermometer now. Sometimes I use it for night time heat. What you have setup is interesting.

20 amps at 240 is about my limit on current. Switching to LEDs would allow me to run a small ac unit and I could seal up the room. That is the long range plan. Buying everything at once is not going to happen and I still have some doubts for flowering.

Balance that against getting 2400W of HPS off of the power bill. Five more lights would do nicely. I already have the ac unit. Maybe I could get a bank loan. [;>)}

Thanks again, the dialog helps sort things out.

I got my cup of tea brewing, sappy love songs playing in the ears and now it's time to buckle down and do some dirty work. This is where the tents are going.

This is what's sitting where all of that has to go.

It's not going to organize and clean itself, so I guess it's up to me. Let's see what kind of magic I can conjur.
