The Everything SWICK Club: 2023 And Beyond

Got these two Pineapple Kush going in the veg tent. I have them topped and trimmed to three nodes.

Training clips are on the get them to grow out instead of up. I already had the clips on the bottom node so they are off now
Looking good so far.

The same deal with the swick. Add a quart or so to the pan every other day and splash the top with about a quart maybe a little less.

Beautiful looking healthy plants!

Man, not sure how I missed this thread when I'm on almost day 80 of my first swick with the AC infiniti bases. I know GDB is using them as well...anyone else Herr doing the same?

Biggest autos I have ever grown, 32" wide and 34" tall.

Ran into a little cal issue midflower but I had the same issue with top watering with MC pre-swicking. Good to see the stick may have added to the issue.

Honestly, it all went well. I did run into an issue this.weekend with my largest girl. It stopped wicking water for 2 days, went to inspect and the roots grew through the wick...17 days after the last cleaning. I cleaned then, still not wicking, should have replaced as the wicks were covered in roots...inside and outside the wick.

Definitely seems if I use them again I will replace the wicks when going into flower for sure....maybe replacing them more than once.

Hey Tim! Welcome :) Thanks for posting about your swicking experience! I'm glad things are picking up pace a bit in here I think. Watching you all succeed and grow such gorgeous plants makes me want to try swick again.

I've thought about using these copper root screens to prevent the roots from growing out the bottom and onto the wick. Just not sure if the girls will drink enough of the fabric pot is wet but roots can't attach to the wick.

That's an interesting looking goodie. Is it a copper mesh to go under the pot as a barrier between pot and wick?

Apparently it's used.with autopots. It goes inside the pot prior to filling it with soil...to prevent roots from growing out of the pot.

My fear in using it is the AC bases say it needs roots growing out of the pot and into the wick to absorb water. While mine seemed to absorb water prior to that stage, they certainly pulled more water once the roots started touching the wicks.

I don't know the answer, but if I can figure out how to prevent roots from over taking the wicks and stopping g water flow, and not have to clean them every 2 weeks or more, it would be an amazing system.

I may.just swick during veg and then hand water the rest of flower.

I never have had roots growing out of my bags and they swick up all the water I give them. I think the swick would still work with the screen. The swick wets the bottom of the bag and the dirt suck it’s up. I would think as long as dirt is touching the bag through the screen it would swick

Best way to find out is try it with a pot full of dirt without a plant in case it doesn’t work.

Are you using the AC infinit bags?

All mine have roots covering the outside bottom of the bag. One had roots grow inside the swick and out the end and into the base.

Yes all ac infinity products and I have never had the roots grow out. Not sure why. My pots are packed w roots when I harvest. I’ll take a pic of the bottom of my bags when I get home.

Are you keeping the bases filled or letting g them go dry?

@Timhomegrow Try using strips of an old grow bag instead of the cord for the wicks.
That's what I use on the same plant risers you seem to be using. I never have a problem with the roots or wicking.

I took some pics of my bottom. I have a little bit of roots coming through. This is prob the most I’ve seen.

Yes I let the base run dry between watering. I put about a quart in every other day and it’s bone dry when I come back.

One other note I am only using one swick string in each pot. Not two

My understanding is these guys live in the desert so they don’t mind going dry between feedings. I don’t think it’s a good idea to keep the soil moist all the time but I’m no expert.

The proof is in the pudding. Your plants are happy!

the new ladies in fresh soil, 50/50 Coast of Maine/Promix Organic, doing great, both got a heavy defol and tied down.
They were both just put on the swick risers last week. before that they were still being bottom fed in dish pans.
Flipping in a few days

Pineapple Chunk at 47 days, no topping just LST. and a dozen tops

Hindu Kush at 43 days topped once leaving 4 nodes for 8 tops

I'm growing 3 plants on swicks and they're doing fairly well.

I had roots escape the bottom of all 3 pots, lots of them. However, the roots never became entwined with the wick cords or otherwise interfere with their performance. I believe the reason for this is that I lifted my pots off the bases daily and turned them a little. That daily repositioning never gave the roots a chance to become invasive. Eventually they just got "schmooshed" to the bottom of the pots.

Here's a pic of the bottom of my Lemon Bubble pot.
