It looks like a neater version of the swicky plate idea, do you agree? I mean they are R2k a pop here, so If I decide to swick again, my basic set up should work fine. I would just need to get the balance with top watering right, to prevent the calcium problems. What do you think?

They're meant to be fed from the bottom Gee. I'm not sure why they describe it that way. Although if you top-watered to run-off, the run-off would go into the base and be sucked back up by the wick lines.

It does look like a neater version. I'm still going to try swicking again one day, but I'm going to fill the res via top watering next time. Completely to negate the calcium problem.

Awesome stuff PerkPot! I don't see an active journal for you. I'd love to know in more detail how you accomplish your watering and feeding if you have some time to explain 🙏

Hi Carmen. I’m really not doing anything special. I water every other day. I put about a quart of water into the swick. It’s bone dry by the time I come back two days later. I also splash maybe a quart as top feed when I fill the swick. I use Walmart brand spring water and have never used tap water.

I use elm dirt bloom juice every once in a while but haven’t been using it much lately.

I think the soil is very important. I use an elite living soil I buy online from the soil makers. It’s pricey but the plants love it and it has enough nutrients to get you through just about the whole grow.

I think equally as important as the quality of the soil and water, is the watering technique, particularly when sub-irrigating in living organic soil. Getting the balance with some top watering has proven essential to disseminate the calcium. How dry does your soil typically get between watering? Do the wicks dry out too between watering, and if so do you have to reset the swick each time?

I let the dirt get dry in between watering as well as the swick. The swick pan is dry when I refill it. I only change the swick string if I notice it’s not sucking the water. I don’t have to do anything special when it goes dry to get the swick working again.

I also let the top soil dry out between watering. I just put a splash twice on top from a gallon jug so not sure exactly how much I am putting in but I use just about a gallon split between the two plants every other day. So a quart in each swick and a quart to top feed each plant every other day. If the top still looks moist I may wait a day to top feed until it dries out.

Yes I do think top watering is important. I have noticed I get almost two distinct root balls. An upper one from the top watering and a bottom one from the swick watering. As I said I just splash some water on the top. Maybe a quart every other day. Some of it runs out the sides of the bag.

If it seems like the top water is just sitting and not soaking in quickly I will take a chop stick and poke the dirt to loosen it and break up the root ball a little so water can go through.

I had to bend the two tallest colas on the Gary Peyton. They were just about reaching the lights.

I am finding I have to poke the dirt with the chopstick each top watering. The upper root ball is really dense.
