The Deep Water Culture Home

I have decided to replace my airstones between grows, because roots have grown into them and I don't see a way to clean them enough to be sure that i don't have anything in there that is rotting and contaminating my res

but I have not noticed any slowdown in bubbling

Try putting the new ones in Knee High sized panty hose. It will keep the roots and gunk outta it...

Interesting, I might have to try that.

Yea you can either use a rubber band around the end where the tubing is, and trim the excess off, or use some plastic twisty tie fasteners (looks like a belt I can't for the life of me remember the name, sometimes my condition makes me forget things)around them as well.

When I go all out Deep Water Culture, I plan on sticking the pumps in panty hose as well. I have LOTS with runs in them that I can use...

There is a lot of light coming in through the walls of that bucket. Could all that light contribute to root rot?

For prevention, hygrozyme or something similar can help keep the water and the roots clean.

This is great advise!! I would definetly get the hygrozyme, it can be costly, however the small bottles are the cheapest. And I must say that the way it works is that it will actually take that rotten root growth, break it down and turn into food for the new growth. That stuff is amazing!!

Love the GF's harvest........

Beautiful Bendog!!! They are looking real tasty! I love the mint harvest too, was that hydro?

no the mint was outside(gotta love the sun) im going to grow some fruits or herbs for fun in hydro though, some blackberries mabey,,can you grow hydro outside or would it grow moss in the res because of the heat??i think they would get super juicy in hydro lol blackberries the size of your thumb.

Real quickie for you guys, what should my PH be during the blooming cycle?
I have seen it posted here in the past but I cant find it today.
Thanks in advance

Thanks DD!
I think the root rot is due to the probs I was having with my res temps.
It was getting as high as 79 degrees!

Is that the actual name of the stuff, Hygrozyme?
I'll have to see if the hydro store has it.

Sorry to see you having this issue, but I was feeling like painting the tubs black was over kill & a waste, until now.
Good luck and I hope your girls recover.
Best Regards,
John Whorfin

Thanks John!
I actually have a can of "Fusion" paint for plastic that I was thinking of using, but I never got around to it! DOH!
I hope my babies survive too!

Something that also works is covering the whole res with foil tape from Home Depot or doubling up on the tubs, one inside the other.

I covered the top with the foil tape, but I didn't think I would need to do the sides too.
Like I said above I was going to paint it, but I figured lots of people have successful grows without covering the tub, so I let it go.
Now I'm kicking myself in the ass!

Well, I already cut all the slimey roots off, flushed the babies and scrubbed the tank and changed the res water.
I will however see if I can get a bottle to keep this from happening again - if my babies survive!
Thanks Butcher!

That is the great John Wayne, brother!

The Duke was my childhood hero, I still have his memorabilia including autographed pics. :)

Hey BubbleBuddies, I wont be around much the rest of the month. Big rush at work. I'll try to keep up on a couple journals and check pm's but that's about it.

Another question, I am getting ready to transfer the cracked seeds into rockwool, should I put them in the res, even though it's DWC, or should i put them in the clone dome covered in the nursery?

Question about the Home Defense. Do I spray it on the walls, will it make drip lines? Can I put it on a paper towel with gloved hands and wipe it down that way???

Another Question, the rockwool will be done soaking in 2 hours, the seeds are just starting to crack just the teensiest bit in the 1/8th inch of water in a coffee cup. Temps around the plants in soil and the beans in the coffee cup are a steady 82 degrees. Humidity is less than 30 percent in the grow area now. Can I wait a couple more hours on transplanting the beans to rockwool, or do I have to do it right now? I can do it in soil if I have to.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Thanks Barto, luv the member photo, is that JR from Dallas?

You mention your humidity is only 30%, I would keep them in the dome where it will be much higher. Also look into raising the humidity, they like it higher during veg. Do what Roseman does and put rolled up wash cloths all over the place and little cups of water.

When I used it it came with a sprayer that put out a mist and I didn't have any problems with it running down the walls. I only did around the edges of the walls and ceilings like the instructions said, not the whole wall. Couldn't hurt though.

This one I'm not too sure on. I can only say that I found it easier to place the seeds in the rockwell when the root was shorter. I had one that was over 1/2" and it was hard to place in there without breaking it off. Again, I don't really know much about this so I'd rather someone else give you a better answer :goodluck:
