BOOTumALL,
Best bet is to cut a Small piece of Bud Leaf and view it on the table, or something stationary.
Very hard to view when still on the plant.
Trichs Turn top down, The One Closest to light will ripe first.
Good Luck and Happy Harvest!

GardenGuy, Those little 60-100 zomes work OK , but , they are a real pain in the ass to use ! They're very hard to focus especially if you try to hold it up to your plant. You need to cut a small piece of leaf or bud and place it on a flat serface than try to focus in on the trichs. I have a little jewlers loup that works very good much easier to see , just not quite powerfull enough to realy see into the trichs. Good enough to tell cloudy from clear or amber though... The one from R.Shack works fine and they are cheap (12 bucks) just a bit tough to focus. :peace:

 Ok, I'm back with more questions. I can see some fur (trichs) forming on the bud leaves. My anticipated harvest date is 4/23. I don't want to tramatize my babies any more than necessary before I kill them outright (I'm a real meanie) i.e., I don't really want to make more cuttings than necessary. My plan is to wait about two more weeks before beginning the close observation of trichs. Sound OK?:reading420magazine:

Yeah thats all im lookin for is somethin i can see the trichs coloring a jewlers loup would be ok i guess i just want to see my trichs when i start buddin

Well they show up near the end as things really ripen ..Usually the trim leaves are full of them , depends on the strain as to how full and snowey looking they get.. check out some of C5Rs pics !! You can also take a clear pic of the buds and put them on your pc and enlarge them ! The trichs really show up nice !! :peace:

Nice im goin to have to try that and see what comes up. The strain im growin is WW so from every other widow i have seen i should get a pretty good lookin snow top hopefully. Im on my way now to check out his pics now.

Where'd you find that avatar? I've been looking at poster sites and can't find it. I would like to have it as an optional screen saver.

I have a kids microscope that wasn't too expensive. I didn't buy it for this I bought it for the kid but it works well. I wish I could use the 400X but it is too much magnification to see anything, so I use the 100x.

The reason why I am responding is that before I remembered that I had that, I used the loop but put a magnifying glass near the leaf first so it doubled the magnification. It worked if you get them in the right position. I have even used two glasses held together and the loop. Try it, it doesn't hurt.:cheer:

yeah i might have to give that a try but first ill need to pick up these items up and plus i wont need em for like another 5 weeks or so huh.

I just wanted to take a moment to say THANKYOU to all the Bubble Heads (MC, Roseman, OBX, FPF, mule, C5Rftw, TheAnswer, yarddog, wowtestdrive, and others) and to express my GRATITUDE that I have such a great place to come learn and get advice. I love you all. That goes for 420 itself also!
:bravo::thanks::thumb::goodjob:
This ones for all of you! :bigtoke:

Friend, you and WowTestDrive did your pre-grow study and you did your homework and you arae succeeding in avoiding many bumps in the road.

I watch new and first time growers come and go on these sites. A few fail entirely, maybe one out of 20, and blame the nutes or the system or the water, when the major problem all along was they failed to prepare and study "how to" BEFORE they got started.
I am always surprised at how many newbies will invest their money, get a tank, start the seeds and then ask "when do I feed them?" OR "how much do I feed them?" or "what temperature do I keep my room, or water?" which tells me they did not buy a book or read up on all the info oprovided on the grow sites. I have seen many growers start seeds and not even own a themometer or a pH test strip, or pH controling chemicals.

You did a great job of being prepared and you are getting great results.

My dad told me a million times

IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, THEN PLAN TO FAIL!

I salute you, bro. :goodjob:

Hello from Doctor Who!:surf: to all of you that are new to the Deep Water Culture! hello to you again and welcome to the group an one of the best ways to grow! an that's with bubbles.

HELLO an :peacetwo:

Have you noticed the soil growers and members who are not Deep Water Culture that come here to THE Deep Water Culture HOME to ask questions? THE Deep Water Culture do have a reputation for being very helpful.

Hey whats up Roseman!! and everybody else here at the Deep Water Culture. Hows it going!? I was gonna send you a PM Roseman but it wouldnt let me, not enough posts.
I was told by the people [elsewhere] that you were here now. Im glad to see your still around man. Its been awhile since Ive been on but I finally got another grow going. Ill have to post some pics up here soon. Alright im out, later everybody! Hit me up whenever you get a chance Roseman.
Peace!!

P.S. HAPPY EASTER EVERYBODY!!

My old friend Thrasher645, how the heck are you???

You disappeared around October or Novemeber when you finished your grow, and missed the Exodus.

Very glad you found us. This is a wonderful home for the Deep Water Culture.
Peace and Love, bro.

Hope everyone had a good weekend! I should have some good hash pics up soon. :grinjoint:

Hey BH's! I understand that we need low humidity for flowering stage. Should I lower the humidity right away, or wait until that first week of transition?
Thx!
Spy

Low humidity doesn't become an issue until the plant starts forming bracts. Bracts are the little flowers that cluster together to for the "cola". When the plants starts to become more and more dense, the issue with humidity and mold becomes a worry. Some plants do better in high humidity areas. I know church is supposed to do well in it, very mold resistant.

So, when you flip to 12/12 low humidity isn't immediately necessary, but it's something you should be working towards. Also, moving air. Things like powdery mildew wont grow well with lots of air movement.
.
I added a little tiny bit of nutes to my tank today. I noticed some leaves curling upward and some downward. I know curling leaves means a problem(I forgot what kind), but how can some be going up and some down? Anyone have an answer?

Plants grew a little, drank a little and have some more root growth. I am hoping to take pump out in a week. How much root mass do I want before taking it out. I will show pictures by tomorrow I hope if able.

As always thank you.

It's hard to say. Some leaves might be closer to a light, and are reaching up for it.

Or are the edges of the leaves starting to curl? Are you getting little canoe like leaves?

If the pump is a problem, take it out now. Just raise the water level a little bit. Once the roots are starting to touch the water, you should be fine.

Hey:420: Ive got a question. How far below the bottom of the net pots do you allow the nute level to reach before replenishing? What's the max level when replenishing? How far up the netpots???
Thanks GROOVERS:peace:

I've gone over 8 gallons of water in my res... it's fine. Not ideal for a long time, but it helps. I like the higher water level when first starting off my clones. Keeps them super moist. Works well for me.

How low do I let it get?? I've seen larger plants suck down 2 gallons of water before I could get back to it. It's fine. You don't want the plants drying out... but if the roots are deep enough in, losing some water wont be a problem.

The bigger obstacle is PH. As the plants drink and eat, PH will change. Just something to consider.

Plants if abused, will produce for you. Plants spoiled will spoil you.

I thought it was ok to fully immerse the pots as long as you got plenty of air going in.

You can get what they call "dampening off". Where the stem first comes out of the rockwool. You have one part dry sticking in the air, and one part soaking wet is the rockwool. The stem can rot and the plant fall over if kept too damp.

Like I said, I keep the res pretty full when dealing with clones. But back off as they grow bigger. No need to waste the extra 2 gallons of water each time either!

:thanks: Do you think, going through the process a couple of times a day, just adding small amounts of Co2 each time would help any, or is it just a waste of time and materials? The plants are doing fine I just want to give them a little love not love them to death! :hmmmm:

No. I don't think it would be worth your time. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. But my personal opinion... its not really worth it.

Now a room setup to best use the c02. Proper venting, regulators, tracking PPM, that will make it worth the time. But that becomes a huge expense.

:helpsmilie: I just purchased a 60 to 100 X Magnifier. I would like to be educated as to the best technique to properly observe the trich activity. I bought the magnifier at Radio Shack and it needs to be placed directly on the media to allow a good look. My question is do I do a small cutting or position the plant in a manner that I can place the magnifier on a leaf near the bud activity. Also do the trichs all over the plant mature at the same rate. Just a dumby here looking to expand some knowhow. :whoa:

First... practice using it. Get used to turning the zoom and focus nobs with one hand. Eventually you get the hang, and know about where to set the focus for each level of zoom. I start around 60x to get an eye, and zoom in as I look it over.

Cutting small trim leaves will help you find what you are looking for. Soon you wont have to cut any parts off. but at first, I would cut a super frosty trim leaf. Be careful not to crush the trichomes!

Take a look. Fiddle with the focus, and zoom. Move to different spots on the leaf. get baked and get lost in the new sci-fi like world! :roorrip:

Take more samples from different areas.

No trichomes do not all mature at the same rate. You'll get a "big picture" but even early on, some will be ripe. Later into flowering, you will still have some new young ones being produced. Just go by the majority of what you see. It takes lots of practice with the scope. Lots of trial and error on harvest time too. remember to keep looking at the bud throughout harvest, drying, and curing. You want as frosty a sample as you can get. but also small as not to hurt the plant.

Don't worry about it. Ask as many questions as you need brother.

So what exactly are those called the 60x-100x magnifiers. The reason i ask is cause i went into radioshack and asked the manager about it and her told me "as long as he been with radioshack he never heard of it" just some stupid jacka** who probably just didnt want to look into it for me so if i can get like an actuall name brand.

Aqua Labs is a site vendor. They also sell a scope. Called 420 science or something. They even have a nice fancy one that hooks up to the computer via USB cord. Check it out.

Plus, its a cool website:

My first bit of advice... is throw that 4/23 date out the window.

It's nice to know when about they will be ready... but its just that. Its a rough guide to approx. when they might be ready. It's just too hard to say when they will be ready, before they have even germinated. Just use it as a rough guide.

Now... don't worry about abusing them. Some actually prefer to abuse plants in the later part of their life. The thinking is, it makes them produce more resin as a self-defense mechanism. Not sure how accurate it is... but doesn't matter. Take small cuts. The tiny little leaves sticking out of the buds. Just take a little bit off so you can scope it. The plants wont even notice.

As the bracts start to swell, the hairs change color, the plants begins to just look more and more ripe. That's when you start keeping an eye on trichome color. Or... that's why I do.

Plus, this is learning! A little abuse on these plants is ok, if you better understand later! Think of it as the "greater good". ;)

For most Deep Water Culture groweres, we do it daily....and put it back to one to two inches below the net pots to allow an airspace between the water line and bottom of the cups..

Well let me start off by tellin everyone happy easter today since i forgot to tell everyone yesterday lol. Ok so tomorrow is the 2nd biggest day of my grow lol i start flowering (of course the number one biggest day in the grow is harvest day). Since i have put my baby in her own bucket she has grown 3 inches thats an inch a day. Im pretty excited to see the growth explosion.

And a Happy Blessed Easter to you too and all our friends here at 420.

I spent yesterday at the hospital, for SHINGLES. It is what happens when the IRS phones you at home.
