Tangwena's Malawi-Style Cob Cure: Fermented Cannabis

Am I correct that at no time did the temperature of that bud get high enough for conversion of THCA into THC, that it was the fermentation process that did it? Or do I really need to go back and read this entire thread?

My understanding of what may be happening in the process is that it will speed up the natural process of THCa converting to THC. I assume the same happens with CBDa and CBD.

Time will degrade the acids into the usable form by itself, but we don’t typically age flowers long enough for that to happen naturally, that’s why the decarb for edibles.

Yes, I'm familiar with the time aspect (as well as the temperature one). I'm trying to understand the mechanics in place here. It seems unlikely (to me) that the fermentation process is generating enough heat to do the trick by itself, but I am obviously not knowledgeable about this Cob Curing stuff. (My ignorance is showing, lol.)

In the absence of heat, my guess is that one or more of the byproducts of fermentation is helping with the conversion. We want to remove a carbon from the THCa, adding extra hydrogen in the form of lactic acid may cause methane or ethane to develop. There may also be enzymatic reactions that happen, that help break that carbon off.

Looking great. The canaries are less dense I see.

Holy hell I just realized the final smoke report is 3 months away. Hopefully a nice lady will post weekly updates HMMMM pretty please?

I could be persuaded. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I missed a bunch of the earlier posts in this thread. To be honest, I figured any thread that has Sue participating would (a) draw new people and (b) be one in which things get explained multiple times (because she is so kind, and her brand of kindness seems to be contagious). But now I am wondering if there are any previous posts in which people stated what brands/models of "seal-a-meal" devices are being used by people? (If there aren't, can y'all post that information?)

I use the FoodSaver unit.

Do these things contain more moisture than "standard bud being placed into a container for curing?" If so, that must be somewhat frightening to have to wait a few months to see if the result is fantastic, about the same, or... not usable.

I'm not frightened at all TS. It'll be vacuum sealed for the cure. That'll remove any problems with mold.

Ohwaitaminute, I forgot who I was "speaking" to, lol. I think, if you fell out of one of your windows, instead of terror, you'd simply think, "Oh, a chance to experience something new, WHEE!!!" (I do not mean this in a malicious way, in case you hadn't guessed.)

I assume she means this in a good way?

Absolutely, it's a good thing. Sweet was the overriding reaction. Just as Tangwena prepared me for. She said it smelled more potent.

Hey??? Hmm. . . .

You are correct TS. The fermentation process does something I don't yet understand. The cure is where is really transforms.

So....here I am 7 hours later, just coming back down. Right after I posted last the energetic side of the cob hit me. Now I understand what Tangwena was talking about. I spent the afternoon speeding on Malawi. On Malawi. :slide: What a wonderful day. I cleaned the tent I harvested yesterday, transplanted and flipped two plants, and I believe I did it in record time. Lol!

Then I went out walking with my good friend, buzzing along. Yep, I could get used to this. :battingeyelashes:

This must be what's going on. There's a lot of heat pumping out of the cobs when they come out of the sweat, and a little less from the fermentation stage, but at no time did it get hot enough for the decarb we're used to.

TS...I have a FoodSaver, mid range model(bout 100 bucks CA)....works well for sealing up venison and sausage...has wet/dry and hi/lo controls...also comes with a hose attachment that is used for vacuum containers... available in both plastic and glass, although I've not used those...before I head south, I seal all my dried and cured produce and stash it at a cool room temp(65ish)...I've had one or two bags leak, but that was before double sealed using rolls...I prefer using their pre made bags, and again, double seal ...but at a bit more money...seems to be the most popular brand up my way...a worthwhile investment for the home aside from this new gig......cheerz... h00k...:rollit:

This new gig made it worth the purchase. Take my word for it. :battingeyelashes:

What I feel most at this point is tired. Lol! I spent the day speeding on 0.5 grams of Malawi. Consider that for a moment my friends.

Now make some of your own and let's get this party going. :slide:

An hour ago I posted that I was starting to come down, but I haven't stopped moving since then, so maybe not. Lol! I'm going to take a few hits of Carnival and see what happens. :battingeyelashes:

High and good afternoon.
Late but subbed up.
I have a big harvest coming up and this new tech just may be given a try!

Oh, I think more than “...just may..” OMG Stage, you’re gonna love this. And I haven’t gotten to the cure yet. Lol!

Tangwena suggests weekly checks, accompanied by a test - of course :slide: - and letting the cobs and canaries dry to the touch each time.

See @Oldbear , great minds think alike. Hehe!

I have no idea how long they’ll take to dry, but that’s why we’re here. Isn’t this fun to learn guys? I can’t wait until you all get to try your own. :battingeyelashes:

Time for another, then.

Hey Sue, you seem to still be... using the sense that God gave ya, lol. How about reminding me in two or three days to check on my seeds? Here or via text, whichever seems best. If I can remember to do so tomorrow, I'm going to try to initiate things once again. And If I do... I cannot afford to keep wasting seeds. I'm almost out of DDA S₁ seeds (FFS!, lol). I want to try one or two of those, one of the... I forget, whatever its... sibling is called, at least one White Widow Auto, and something phototropic for R. to grow outdoors if he can handle the physical aspects this year (something Indica-"ish," obviously, due to our location - I'll have to check to see what I have left after passing some along to others, my foolish wastage, etc. - and maybe a Serious Bubble Gum if I can make provision for quarantining a male, in case it becomes one. Uh... Blah blah blah.

Thanks for posting information about your specific devices, you two. Although I am not in the market, others will be (especially after reading this thread ;) ) , so I assume the information will be helpful in the future.

I put a note in my calander TS. I'll text you. :battingeyelashes:

I am so happy. This was a mere taste, and not really an indicator of what's ahead. In Tangwena's opinion, young, uncured cobs are too......, I guess raw is a good descriptor. I found it deliciously speedy, without the nasty things that come with actual pharmaceutical speed, which no sane woman in her early sixties would play with. Lol! It's been decades since I last dabbled in pills.

I had more fun today. :laughtwo: My attitude was playful and humorous. Nothing phased me. Everything was just a tad sweeter, a wee bit more. I guess that's what I'm struggling to describe. The fermenting makes everything "more." Does that make any sense to you?

So......... How much smell are ya dealing with ? Not sure how my missus will react to the smell of fermenting.
She has said thai stick was her favorite ever from the 70s. I think I could get something special with this method.

I just broke out a vacuum sealed baggie from december. Bud was all compacted and crumbly. I still have another vacuum baggie in storage
Gotta admit the cob looks like something I would like to do.

I've read that stored oil will convert into a usable form without heat after about 3 months. Check it out. Google ND sap or Naturally Decarbed sap. Its supposed to be superior to RSO because it preserves the terpines. Thinking the same principal applies to the cobbed weed. Definitely interesting.

GG has great success with the ND Sap, something none of us was able to replicate so far. Isn't this why cured is better than fresh? Time and temperature are the factors at play with decarb. What happens in this fermentation stage that accelerates the process?

The Carnival was a fine way to finish off the day.

I'm gonna find a way to cob most of my next Carnival harvest. I grow it for more than myself, so keeping all of that harvest for cobs means I'll have to let the BIL have what I have on hand. That means no Carnival except what I have stashed for my own consumption

He'd understand if I kept all the Carnival for myself, but really, how fair is it to keep all of the best? He won't be able to handle cobs. The least I can do is keep him supplied with bud. It's not like I don't have other options. Lol!

Man....11 PM and I'm worn out. Lol! I'll catch you all in the morning. :hugs:

@lazyfish , did I miss your smoke report?

I don't think it's too bad keltic, and it should get sweeter as it goes along. I'm sure it's strain dependent. At this stage it still smells fresh. Every time I pull it out and let it dry again the internal chemistry'll shift.

Edit: I want you doing this keltic. You'll love this process. Yours will look professional straight out.

I anticipate that'll be the norm around here once we get going. Put all these brilliant and curious brains together and it can't fail to inspire all of us to excellence. We are gonna have so much fun with this. :slide:
