Tangwena's Malawi-Style Cob Cure: Fermented Cannabis

@Gazoo, I wouldn’t worry about soaking and rinsing until right before you need one. I soak for 15-20 min anyway to get them nice and pliable. Now that you’ve alerted me to this I’ll start rinsing them too. :battingeyelashes:

When I raised this before, someone mentioned husks from organic corn.

Dont use pesticide and/or preservative treated things. Dont do it @SweetSue no no.

A wet preservative infused skin locked in an airtight bag and heated. Just sounds bad.

Apparently the WHOLE FOOD Corn Husks, I Purchased, are LABELED and packaged as ALL NATURAL.
Country of Origin : Mexico (may have a different standard for listing ingrediants?
Because I see an additional added label that says
CONTAINS: Sulfites (Sulfer Dioxide) as a Preservative

More Web Research information:

Many foods contain sulfur dioxide, but according to the Food and Drug Administration, only foods that contain 10 mg/liter or 10 ppm are required to have it on the label. Dried fruit tends to contain high amounts of the preservative, and as a result, it’s often listed on the label."

Thinking just about any PACKAGED CORN HUSKS will probably have used that process

Anyway everything I have read says they CAN be washed to remove

Gazoo what is the purpose of these packaged corn husks?

I found this:

Directions
To prepare corn husks for tamales. Trim each end of husks; open each husk and clean well. Place into boiling water and soak for about one hour with heat off. Husks should be 6 to 7 inches long and 2-1/2 wide when ready to use.

We use them for the COBing process

I was just making the observation that WASHING them could be a WISE step ?

Sorry what I meant was, other than cobbing, why are these even in a store. What are they used for?

I didn't anticipate that people eat them.

Up here (Canada) corn is sprayed with all sorts of sh!t so the corn doesn't get messed up. That is on the husks.

I agree with you totally and would go farther - washing them is essential.

OH I see Yes here in California they are used for TAMALES, They are not eaten but only used to wrap the
TAMALE for cooking, once finished they are removed and thrown out before eating. Kinda like the COB

EDIT: I expected to get ORGANIC CORN HUSKS at WHOLE PAYCHECK and did not really look the package
over well enough. Also 6.99 for 2 0z of corn husk that would of been thrown away is rather High :(

Wash the corn husks before use. The water makes them more pliable and there are occasionally bugs or pests that got through the screening process so it's a good idea to check for and wash off any nasties. (I saw a YouTube clip on using the husks for tomales).

And get the proper ones made for tomales, apparently if you just get a regular ear of corn and pull of the husk it could have all sorts of pesticides n what not. But food grade ones are fine. Just might be hard to find since they're not stocked in regular shops, but a Mexican shop should have some.

Here’s my Unknown OG cob after 24 hours at 104°. The husk took on a lot of purple, it smells like lavender, very floral. Which is weird cause the buds smell like fuel.

Here is some Patio OG that I put in a jar at 104° for 24 hours then another 24 at 85°. I opened the jar a couple times and changed the paper towel. The green nug is uncured for comparison.

I found the same thing the aromas after the cure can be pola opposites to the buds. The Malawi x Ethiopia buds have a sweet floral smell very nice but the cobs when cured right have a menthol tea tree oil smell also very nice but nothing like the fresh buds.
The changes to the oils and terps in the cure are quite outstanding.
If you can get a cheap USB micro scope get some shots of the resin on both the cob and dry flowers it will blow you away.

I soak them Oldbear, but I’ve been considering purchasing Press ‘n Seal to use instead, like Mack did.

I have tremendous respect for the power of my immune system to overcome any wayward toxin that’d be crazy enough to attempt slipping into this joy-filled body. That’s what a healthy immune system does. :battingeyelashes:

Having said that, I’m not in the habit of actively seeking out toxins to ingest. Lol!

Thank you for caring Oldbear. :hugs:

Experimentation often means we sometimes toss a little money ahead of our sensibilities. In a universe where everything always works out for the best this isn’t anything to be concerned with.

I may find a family that makes tamales and donate my bag of husks. For sure now I’m picking up that Press ‘n Seal.

@Gazoo, I haven’t spent much time around you lately, since choosing hempy over the kit and I’d forgotten how much I adore your energy. :hugs:

Nice Doob! I'm really liking the jar cure. They just keep getting darker. I opened my jar again last night because there was more moisture and I had not put the paper towel back in after the initial sweat. I'm looking forward to trying the buds after the ferment.

I’m looking forward to pictures of your jar cure Neiko. I’m hoping you and Doob keeping decent records of your process. This is the next one I want to try. The mason jar vacuum attachment will be here today.

What size jars are you two using? How much open space are you leaving in the jar?

I like the corn husks. Using plastic to avoid preservatives, although I’m sure just as safe, feels like jumping from the pan to the fire. That’s ine reason I’m trying the jars.

I used an 8oz jar and filled it full without compacting anything. I didn’t really document anything beyond those photos. One thing that’s surprised me so far is the paper towel doesn’t seem to really get too damp. I think maybe the paper towels are the quicker picker upper super absorbing kind and there just isn’t enough moistere to wet it much.

Whats this "Press ‘n Seal" is it the Glad brand of tight wrap ? would we use it IN PLACE of the Husks
in the same way ?

Still plenty of time to go before I will need to use any of this. Thinking I will do it a few different ways
when the time comes . Planing a JAR Cure, Corn Husk and maybe the Press 'n Seal

I’m with Doob. I’ll continue to use husks, but I want to experiment with the Press ‘n Seal - and yes, it’s the Glad product. I like the thought that trichomes might not cling to the inner side.

I haven’t been using the husks long enough to notice a difference in flavors or effect wrapped in husks vs wrapped some other way. I don’t want to stop before I’ve figured it all out. :battingeyelashes:

Can you describe the process with the press n seal? Can they be used with the regular vacuum sealer or do you have to have something else?

Mack used it with her cobs, and she used the non-stick side to the cob. I personally lack the plant material to try yet - still a few weeks out. Lol!

I know I can’t be the only one of us anxiously waiting on the next harvest. :battingeyelashes: :green_heart:

Anyway Magoo, Mack’ll probably be along any minute to fill in the blanks. When I get to playing I’ll take some detailed pictures.

Oh..... I stopped to share a realization I had about my cob experience.

When I’m continuing to smoke but my cells have had enough cob they’ll tell me to slow down.

Really, I’ll take a hit and here’s a tiny “hey” from inside my brain. It’s a signal that I’ve hit my cellular limit and it’s time to coast on the wings of euphoria.

This never happens with plain buds. Weird, huh? Well, if we don’t share the weird stuff we may miss something important.

I never caught up to Neiko’s Carnival extravaganza. I keep getting distracted when I smoke. Lol! I turn around and it’s been an hour. I’ll never catch him like that.

They sure are tasty. I’m considering getting a good vape and switching to appreciate the flavors better. I’ve been playing with the hemp wick and the bong and I can get a couple passes rich with terpenes. Yummy!

A walking engagement at 7 AM has me turning in uncustomarily early on this Saturday night. Have fun cobbers. :ciao:

I'm glad to see you're having luck vaping it! I don't know if it's the hashy consistency or I'm not reaching high enough temps with the vapcap, but I've not been able to get much from it that way as yet.

Down to the last two cobs now, and almost out of bud too. Gonna keep at least one til the end of the year :D
