Tangwena's Malawi-Style Cob Cure: Fermented Cannabis

Phenomenal delivery! Thanx, Gazoo, for complicating my selection process! That Guawi report was enticing. Wish I could try them all!

My Pleasure :)

Be back in about 6 months with a Cob report

"he's got high hopes, he's got high hopes
Hes got high apple pie, in the sky hopes "

=====================================================================

I'm trying to put together a list of equipment I'd need to start cobbing and had a few questions.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to find corn husks (anyone in Australia know where to look?) so is there anything else I could use?
If using a food dehydrator for the cure/ferment how long does it need to be on for / how long should you dehydrate? One dehydrator I saw says it will run a max of 40 hours before you gotta turn it off and another has a digital timer for only 19.5 hours, is that long enough?
What temperature should I aim for? I've seen one starting at 35C (95F) and another at 38C (100F) going up to 65-75C (149-167F).
What's the smell like cobbing with a dehydrator?

I got by with a vacuum sealer and a slow cooker, the vacuum sealer being the more important of the two, the slow cooker being replaceable with a food dehydrator, a heat mat+container+towels, on top of your grow lights etc.

The vacuum sealer will deal with any smell issues after the sweat in my experience. During sweat there was a noticeable smell, even through the vac bags, but not distinctly of bud, more like green tea. I don't know if this would be the same in a food dehydrator as a water bath.

As for corn husks I don't know about potential health concerns re: pesticides or anything, but there's always corn at the grocery store. It's not necessarily needed though, anything that can distribute the pressure from the twine and contain everything snugly will work.

Temperature (or any of the variables tbh) isn't set in stone, everything's a guideline and what works for some people/buds, won't work with others.

Basically though,
Sweat, ferment, cure.
24hr, 2wk, 3+mth
40c, 20c, ambient/cool.

Edit: good luck! Document everything, for prosperity

You don't need the husks, I've ditched that part already. The vacuum seal compacts them enough. On the 1st page of this journal is a flow chart that gives step by step instructions with an explanation of each step in the 2nd part of the chart.

This weekend, I harvested my Alien vs Triangle (auto) and let the buds dry for about 2 days to prepare for cobbing.

Knowing I was going to vac-seal the newly harvested buds "naked," I was too lazy to soak corn husks and then dry them off, just to get them rolled up. So I decided to try Glad® Press & Seal® instead.

I laid the sticky side of the Press & Seal down atop the bamboo sushi mat, so it stuck to the mat but not to the buds. It worked really well! Got the cobs pretty tight. Definitely going the GP&S route going forward.

I finally had time to watch this and it distressed me to get to the center of the film and come across the litany of lies

“However, marijuana, just like any drug, has it’s negative effects. It can cause short-term memory loss, “

And for a patient with PTSD this is not a negative effect!

“schizophrenia, blackened lungs, psychotic disturbances,”

Blatant, bold-faced lies based on erroneous data interpretations intended to discredit the healing potential of the safest drug on the planet.

“and a complete disconnection with reality.”

This was an award-winning documentary, released last year, for pity’s sake. Those professing to be informed do us all a disservice when they continue to spout the lies built to support propaganda.

Moving past that disturbance in the force Lol! I’m fascinated in the way cannabis is massively manipulated in production outside of our little groups that encourage delicacy in handling. We do our best to keep from crushing any trichomes.

Obviously it’s not really necessary to do if all you’re using the cannabis for is getting high. Not to disparage that choice. You all know I’m a big advocate of euphoria. It just fascinates me how we’ve developed this culture of pampering the crop and the harvest, when you get out in the bush and they rip a bud from the plant and smoke it. Lol!

Someday I’m gonna play with the idea of a rolling harvest.

@Stage, thanks for sharing that. I enjoy a look at other cultures. I was watching him build the pile of cobs thinking 1) “Look at how beautifully consistently he wrapped them” and 2) “I bet if we tossed them into a scale he’s within a couple grams on all of them.”

My days have picked up a cob rhythm. I start the day chewing about 0.3-0.5 gr of whatever cob catches my eye while I’m showering and supplement it throughout the day with smoked, usually from the same cob
(But certainly not limited to that choice :D) whenever the desire for more soaring occurs.

Later in the day, around 5-6 PM I’ll have a brownie, either Carnival or Dark Devil Auto, and that’ll get me through to bedtime, with smoking on the side, of course. :battingeyelashes:

So far, that’s been working out right nicely in the euphoria department. I’m still adjusting to the shift in euphoric style. The cobs are more distracting than normal.

I’ll tell ya, I’m smiling all the time. Lol!

Whe you guys get the buds ready to cob do you remove the fan leaves? If so do you just remove all of the big shade leaves or the smaller ones that come out of the buds as well? I have a plant I am thinking of cobbing when it comes down and am just trying to figure out some small details.

I remove all fans. Everything else gets cobbed.

It’s worth remembering that the entire plant, from soil line to apical tip, is covered with trichomes, most only a single cell high, but all of them filled with the essential oils.

I think we’re getting a more well-rounded medicine with the sparse trim for cobbing. We’re getting it all. :battingeyelashes:

WWhat else besides husks?

WWell, since y'all asked,,

I have, since day one of cobbing for me, three months now,, been using used volcano vaporizer vapor bags, basically food grade oven bags. I found that the husks absorbed a noticeable amount of the cannabis colour and its odour, which for me means its oils, so i abandoned husks

Well I won't be using volcano vaporizer vapor bags, but food grade oven bags you say? Now those I can find at the local shops. I wonder what would work better out of the Glad Press n Seal or Oven Bags (vacuum sealed after of course).

normal stuff from ACE, buy 5 get 6. I have had honest dealing with them in 4 orders. cheers!

edit: ? just a thought about prices, in the cat they are in euro? i dunno? just thinking. mine always matched up. good luck

I have only ordered from them 3 times and Always got the Extra Bonus Seeds, but never
an additional amount on the ordered seeds :) Oh I did take into account the Euro Conversion :)

EDIT: At least I dont remember getting any Extra but I do test the product as the day goes on

Just a quick update on my first attempt at cobs.

After initial fermentation it has now been almost 5 days at approx 28C to 30C. So I opened it today to take a quick snif and peek.

Oh man, the smell, and it's only going to get better.
You can see the horizontal groves from the bamboo mat I rolled it in and you can also see the design from the vacuum bag. I reckon it might help with drying - more surface area exposed :)

It's back in the bag now and cooking away gently for at least another 5 days.

Peace
