Stunger's Organic Soil Stealth Balcony: Landrace Mulanje & Other Sativas

Damn, they look excellent, Stunger!
Looks like the Mango Sherbet has one little branch that wants to have a peek over that rail... :)
This has to be your best grow yet, Stunger! Looks to be well within stealth limits. But given all that beautiful thick foliage, it's doubtful anyone down below would be able to identify the person who was on the balcony with the plants.

Great pic!
Still loving Mulanje!!! but great grow job on all!
Cheers tropics! Yes the Mulanje is looking nice but it has been the easy part up to now, it is the flowering, pests and weather that arrive next that can upset the apple cart.

Thanks Emeraldo! That's the aim, to improve and grow some decent plants. So far in growing, I haven't been able to bring myself to prune off weaker growth stems from a plant, but now with 4 plants squashing the balcony space, I may get motivated to do that next grow, perhaps start them off a little earlier and only allow strong growth stems to remain. Hmmm... just a thought. :smokin2:and then I had another thought :smokin2:that the Mango Sherbert may finish earlier and 'release' a bit of space. Altho, right now it is the Mulanje that looks like she is about to kick off first.

The next part is what makes outdoor growing great. Its the little challenges, they make the harvest's so much more rewarding. Nice view!

Definitely! So far I have done very little, even the training was virtually all done in just a few times with minor adjustments here and there. However soon the casual bare feet, shorts and t-shirt, are going to have to give way to the full on 'ghost busters' surveillance PPE kit to keep the coming invasions of mite/caterpillar and general pests at bay. :lot-o-toke:

Update - on Top dressing

Greetings 420 enthusiasts! This update is to detail what I did last time compared to this grow for my own reference when my next grow rolls around so I know what the hell I did!

Top dressing strategy on my previous grow

I started my grow last year with the hope that I could manage the whole grow without any top dressing and just give waterings with worm wee added. However, as my outdoor grows are vegged for up to 3 or 4 months and then flowering on top of that, the plants are grown for up to 7 months or more. On last year's grow in early February, one single plant started showing lower leaf yellowing and I gave it a top dressing that consisted of;
  • 1/4 cup Blood n Bone
  • 1/3 cup Fish Meal
  • 3 tablespoons Neem powder
  • 1 cup diastatic Malted Barley
  • 6-8 cups Worm Castings
That plant responded well. Then after a few more weeks the other 2 plants showed lower yellowing that indicated that they could also benefit from a topdressing, which I gave them also, but I thought at the time it probably would have been better if I'd done so a bit earlier because top dressings take a little bit of time to get taken into the soil. However, as I noted above, my view was coloured a bit by being somewhat single minded in my hope that I could carry out a water only LOS grow.

Top dressing strategy for this grow

So based on past experience, I have accepted that my containers are probably a bit too small to carry out 7+ month grows with water only. So my thoughts for this time was to carry out the top dressing based on the timing shown previously. And also, I thought this time I would 'trickle top dress' them, i.e. give them several smaller top dressings rather than one larger one. However, I have revised that intention to now just give them one further top dressing that will hopefully be all that I need to give them. My reason for only one more top dressing which I have given today, is that this top dressing should supply them with all they need now until harvest time, and plus, in the second half of flowering I want to apply some 'drought stress' treatment to the plants, for this reason I don't want the plants to suddenly show me at that point they need further top dressing because if I am droughting them I don't want to break drought treatment to water in a top dressing application. I should point out that when outdoor growing, drought treatment is very dependent on what the weather gods bring, so if they push the 'rain button' then my draughting intentions will not work.

So, here is the top dressing that I have given my plants this grow;

1st topdressing - 20 January 2022
  • 2 tablespoons Blood n Bone
  • 2 tablespoons Neem powder
2nd topdressing 2 weeks later - 3 February 2022
  • 2 Tablespoons Blood n Bone (1/8 cup)
  • 2 Tablespoons Fish Meal(1/8 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons Guano Phosphate(1/8 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons Seafood Lush Fert Mix(1/8 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons Kelp meal(1/8 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons Neem Powder(1/8 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons Diatomaceous Earth/Silica(1/8 cup)
  • 1/2 cup rough ground diastatic malted barley
<edit> The above quantities are for the smaller 30L (13 gallon) containers. I added a bit extra for the larger 50L (13 gallon) containers.

All the best folks, thanks for dropping by! :ganjamon:

Hey Stunger great grow.
Loving your progress!
Really looking forward to seeing yours stack!
I think I may be running the same line of Mulanje as you, Currently doing seed repro.
Morlies Mulaje from plant #1 and #2 seeds two of each bottom branches knocked up and seed coming along. The two shorter ones are from plant #2 seed. These went outside as seed under 10.5 hours daylight Nov 22th.

Update - 2 different views annotated

Greetings 420 enthusiasts! There is nothing much new to report as I find myself making any excuse to gaze out at my plants and will them to burst into budding colas. Patience patience I tell myself, as once all is done then there is the big wait of the outdoor off-season until Spring growing weather comes again. From the side window the Mulanje looks like the smallest plant even though her canopy is 3 inches short of 4 feet across.

So from the side window!

And front on to give a height perspective to the balcony rail!

Thanks for dropping in, keep well and may your buds be potent and plentiful! :ganjamon:
Ha ha the side window view is a ripper. They are really showing off .

Early flowering update - mostly pictorial

Greetings 420 gardeners. We're between vegging and flowering, so in some ways not a lot is happening at the pointy end of the stems, but there soon will be! For future reference, I have taken some early flowering pics of the girls, and some of the boy too.

The balcony girls

Malawi/Ethiopian x Mulanje

Honduras/Panama x Purple Honduras

Mango Sherbert

Mulanje Male

Thanks for dropping by, all the best. :ganjamon:

You cross breeding or making seeds bro

Hi Dust, if all goes well, my intention is to selectively pollinate a couple of branches of each girl with pollen from the Mulanje male.
Hey yeah. I going to follow someone was telling me different way to do that. How many days and such. Might been you. Did you buy the male. Plant. Or just happen to be one in the group of seeds

The seeds were regulars. I originally germinated 3 of the Mulanje, but a slug ate one, and from the two remaining I have 1 female and 1 male.

Hey @Stunger, the girls look amazing. I have a question or two for you. First, thanks for this. This is amazing and a great, detailed post. I know growers who won't give up their soil mix or their amendments, so thanks for sharing. My questions are,
- What was in the soil when the seedlings went in? Anything? Or just microbes? And how and when did you prep these pots for the seedlings if there was any prep to do?
- Since they went in the pots, you have given just water, other than your amendments?

Sorry for pre-6 am questions...Lol. Thank you!
