Most folks use the top vents for exhaust to remove heat from the tent but some of that will depend on whether the room where the tent is (sometimes called the "lung room") is warmer or cooler than you want the tent. In the winter I push air in the top and out the bottom because the air is warmer near the ceiling. In the summer the exhaust is sent out the top, with cooler air from the floor being pulled in.

Either way, if smell is an issue, make sure there is negative pressure in the tent (walls pulled in). If you have intake and exhaust fans try to run the exhaust fan equal to or higher than the intake to make sure all the air is going through the filter on the way out.
Thanks all for the input its in the basement and i only have one inline fan (cloudline t6 )so now in the summer it is cold and in the winter its warm hope that helps with the setup question

Smoked some well aged herbs, and got to staring at my SIP, and thought...

Can a SIP also be a fish tank? 🐟🦀
Or partially incorporated into a fish tank?
Maybe bottom dwellers like catfish, some snails, and scum suckers?
Would it starve the plant and kill the fish? Or would both thrive?
Would it be inhumane to test it out with live fish... in the name of science?

Would you follow along even if I killed 2 dozen fish getting the system figured out???:rip::oops:

I was thinking a normal fish tank with a tote sitting 3/4 on top (so i can still feed the fish) and a couple soil/ perlite pipes connecting em, as a prototype... but I won't post it on here if a belly-up goldfish would make anyone weep.

Hey RedSkinned!! Yes sir that would be aquaponics, think it would work just fine. In my noggin there’s 1 consideration.…I think most aquaponics setups use something like a net pot and hydroton clay balls. Thinking maybe a fabric bag of soil doing perpetual teabag routine might turn the water too brackish…. Not sure if top watering is allowed or if the leachate is tolerated by the fish

Big nope, I’m not gonna lose any sleep over goldfish, Go for it…. I’d be happy to follow along!!! If you use 420 search bar and look for aquaponics there’s multiple pages of results. Azimuth was tinkering with this but I have not followed up on his progress…

A friend of mine here tried it - I think once for some vegetables and once with weed. A tough gig.

His issue was balance and he was basically doing it outdoors in the tropics.

TL/Short Story.

Environmental balance is really hard. From what I remember he got it all started perfectly and in harmony above and below both times. Followed a Youtuber’s instructions. Then both times got a little out of balance and everything died in like 12-24 hours. Fish and plants. Its doable but tough gig like I said.

Although indoors gives you a fighting chance.

But put it this way - I currently have an 80L empty fish tank. I’m generally up for anything. But like Meatloaf sang,

I would do anything to grow, but I won’t do that… 😂

Put the bong down and back away slowly.... :laughtwo:

Like others said, that would be an aquaponics setup and tricky to get right. The reservoir would probably have to be aerated and somehow filtered otherwise the build-up of fish wastes will kill the fish.

I've had an aquaponics setup for a few years (non grow related) and found it worked well for non-flowering herbs like lettuce but trickier to get right for flowering stuff like flowers and tomatoes. It has to be 100% organic otherwise you'll kill the fish.

Lots of ways to get it wrong. I have read of some aquaponics setups working with our plants, but none were in SIPs, but rather some sort of a recirculating system. Mine is a flood and drain using a bell siphon in the grow beds and a water pump in the sump tank.

I've seen the aquaponics setups, running the fish-poo-water over the plants and such.
I was more thinking a regular fish tank that just happens to have a gigantic weed plant growing out of it. I'll foliar any heavy nutrients the plant needs, and fill the tank with cool bottom feeders - crayfish, snails, etc. Fish that like cloudy water.
I'm going to run the dirt down into the water in a netted pipe, but I fully expect it to make the water cloudy until it settles.
I'm not looking for a perfect union of symbiosis, where fish feeds plant and plant filters fish poo and no one needs my help.

Just a big ass weed plant growing out of a cool fish tank where they both thrive and look awesome on my instagram...:ganjamon:

Nick & The Giant SIP update

I made some design changes. The periscope got new holes and then I cut out both layers between ‘scope and medium areas.

I have a journal for it which I will add to my sig. Journal wise is will be a Slow burner*. Popped last night, Red ahot Killer Cookies. Should I make it that far flip is probably mid November and harvest January?

*unless it grows too fast 😂

Hi all! What temp range do you all like to keep your tents at i thought the 60s was kinda low so i threw a heater in there killed the humidity level
IMG_0164.png
Ive got my threshold set at 75, but the humidity threshold gets tripped on mine more often than temp.

Edit:
Check out a VPD chart if you arent familiar with that yet to get dialed in:

Double Edit:
Just scrolled up and saw y ou have the new AC controller...disregard my VPD chart heh.

I had to flush a SIP grow today. I had her in a 5G bucket with a GroBucket SIP insert. I duct-taped a smaller tube to the end of my shop vac and just vacuumed out any runoff as it went into the res. Meanwhile, I filled an old homebrewing bucket with 5G of water and used a piece of tubing to run the water through Julie. It worked pretty well, I was able to run 5G of water through then 2L of nutrients. I'll fill back up the SIP res tomorrow and let her continue that way.

Saucer under the bucket instead of mopping up overflow every time. Why didn't I think of that! 🤦‍♂️

What was the reason for the flush if you dont mind me asking?
I wanted to flush her current soil and start feeding her a new nutrient mix. She's struggling hard and I'm trying to get her happy.
