Rifleman's Roost Open 24/7: Perpetually Perplexed

Sue and tead got to you too, huh? I swapped out my dwc buckets this time around for hempys. I couldnt have the pumps going since the maintenance crew has been in and out of the apartment. Super stealth is required for the moment. They seem to be a bit slower than dwc but still quite a bit faster than soil.
Good luck on your seed creation.

I didn't twist any arms... just temptation.

I like your basic evaluation... thanks. I share your thought process here. I wonder if an air pump and stone would boost things. Gotta get off my ass and get that going.

Feels good to be back in the saddle, doesn't it Lucas? I get nervous after too much time with the fans silent. :laughtwo:

You may need to water around the seedlings until they get their roots to the reservoir. The perlite won't wick efficiently above 8". Get those roots down into that nutrient-rich zone ASAP.

Nice to see him back from his summer wanderings.

So you feel the limit is 8"? Is that from the top of the res or the bottom of the bucket?
My 12" tubes have about 3" of res in the bottom and about 1" of empty space on top. If I go 8" from the top of the res, I'm right at the top of my medium.

I can't say the same for the MBAP. Three and a half weeks and they are stinky. Don't even have real budsites yet, and they reek. Eye, yi, yi. :thedoubletake: Bet my filter struggles with these.

I was lucky NCH wasn't a stinker. The two Tyrone's in my tent stink really bad. Bad enough I think it's time for a new filter. Brand recommendations anyone?

It is nice to have a garden for sure. Relaxes me almost as much as the end product. :)

Hand watering has always been a problem for me Sue. That's the reason there are three DDA in there... I can afford to kill them.

Stealth is always a good thing. :)

My wastebasket is about 16 inches tall, the reservoir is maybe 5 inches deep. The way my buckets hammer out flowers, and since the COBs have cured my heat problems, I doubt this will be more than a one off experiment. It's fun to play around with something new though. :passitleft:

I haven't found one that works as well as I feel they should. Every other grow or two I disassemble mine and replace the carbon. I've read about reactivating it using a grill or self cleaning oven, but haven't tried it yet.

Always short on personality and even shorter on substance, I figured it was time I dropped a little data for those that might want to learn or imitate.

The MBAP have been zooming along and each needed a drink tonight, so one gallon plain water with 1 ml pH down in it for each girl. That puts the gallon in the 6.4pH range give or take. :) Below are the before and after pH/ppm readings.

Advanced Nutrients
#1) 6.8@72/536. Top Off. 6.6@71/491. 12.5"

#2) 6.9@72/539. Top Off. 6.6@71/452. 17.25"

Remo Nutrients
#3) 6.6@71/748. Top Off. 6.5@71/678. 18"

#4) 6.7@71/791. Top Off. 6.5@71/620. 14"

As always criticisms, comments, and questions are always welcome. While y'all digest this I'm going to sit on the porch and enjoy the cool breeze. Peace Y'all. :peace:

Looking good Rifleman! Plants are loving the cob’s

I am very pleased with them so far. :) This time last year the reservoirs were a steady 78-80deg and by the end of the grow the roots were brown. With the lower temps and electric bills I'd have to say it's a win/win. :)

Handwatering hempy isn't akin to watering in soil. You dump and run. :laughtwo: Takes me all of maybe 10 seconds per pot. Lol! That doesn't count the mixing.

The bucket girls sure do love to grow for you. Having met you, I can understand their desire to please. :battingeyelashes:

Yes, the wicking action drops off precipitously after 8", so you simply need to consider that top layer as stability and get the roots into that 8" rich with nutrients. HealingKronic and his dad put together a massive SWICK system a few years back and they were the ones to discover and prove this to be true. I'm adapting what he shared to hempy.

I refuse to relinquish my "Laziest Grower Ever" title... but I can appreciate the challenge.

Sticking my wet nose under the tent...

I appreciate your philosophy.

I may not be the laziest grower ever, but I try to do the absolute least work possible.

Example: This post sat on my computer for almost an hour...too lazy to push SEND...

Peace, Hyena

Believe it guys, I'm the laziest of the bunch. I just happen to have a larger consumption scale than y'all. At an oz a week, and only a 4.5 to 5 month season I need the buckets to turn 4oz each everytime. Somewhere there is some dude with the option of tossing a handful of seeds outside, and only coming back for harvest...oh how I envy that person. :smokin2:

How about a quick Saturday update ? I added another gallon each this morning and took a few measurements. I won't bore you with the pH and ppm, so just the heights and a couple of photos. :)

Enjoyed reading this. Nice work.

Thanks Grandpa. :high-five: I just cruised through your neighborhood. I like your clean efficient set up. Nothing beats a working system that provides all your needs in a simple way. :goodjob:

Lucas, I see great similarities between the two nutrient lines. Are you seeing the same on your end?
