Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

I'm going to watch what happens now. The Headband were not ready when I fed everything else the MG so at least I don't have that to content with. If the guano doesn't do anything then I will try to lower the PH to see if it is just the nutrients looked out. Calmag will be next if it hasn't cleared up or got worse. At least a month for the Blueberry headband to finish so I better try something.

I always like to get a pic first thing after unzipping the door. This is my first look for the day and always a good representation of how this are going. Here is this morning.
I have to take pictures from the side now. Can't back up enough straight on anymore. No change with the Headbands it has only been a day so I didn't expect any yet. I will be going with a low ph water next time I water these. I think the potasium is just locked out. As Mi mentioned this could be a cal/mag problem. My book says that this leaf damage could be mistaken for this. That is why I went the way I did to start. A lower ph water will not harm the anything so it is a easy one to try. My PH runs a little higher then perfect but has always did fine right out of the tap. Dropping it to a 6.5 or a little lower will not be a problem. Hope some thing works. At least a month to go so these plants will loose some in of production if I can not solve this. Not a good thing when it is one of my favorite strains.

Today I PH downed 10 gallons of water for the Blueberry Headband. It is in the 6.3 to 6.5 range. Real low for me. Tap water runs about 6.8 to 7.0. High if you are doing hydro. With soil it works fine for the masses. Occasionally I find strains that just can't handle it. I flushed both plants with plenty water. Now we wait. One of them is showing low nitrogen. I want to wait a bit before adding anything else. This is always a problem you will find when growing multiple strains at one time. Figure it would be a strain I love. That freaky looking Poly type plant is already putting out that great Headband smell. Better find a way to make that one happy.
Along those lines the smells are starting to show up in most plants. Somewhere along the lines I got away from squeezing the buds and smelling them all the time. Usually I just crush trichomes and stick my mustache to my lip. The best smells come later on anyway. The smell on some plants change so much through flower it does you now good to disturb them anyway. I love the fact that you are wafted with great smell when you unzip the tent. So I will keep it this way and see what they are like when the dry. Other then a quick wiff here and there I will just wait. "Good thing to think about" Every time you lightly squeeze those buds some trichomes are crushed. Doing this over the course of a month to a month and a half while they are producing these great smells can crush tons of trichomes. You don't have to baby plants. They can take fairly tough treatment. But enough trichomes die or get damaged while growing no use increasing it.

One month into flower and all is doing well except the 2 Blueberry Headband. The are still showing leaf damage. Going to do some more research into in more today. Here is how the tent looks
I have to say I was right! Mostly it was lucky I'm sure. The stretch on no plant got to be a problem. Right on the edge though. Looks like the CBDdurban is still going up. It is now the tallest plant or close. The Purple Betty clone is about the same size. but is not really getting taller.

Another thing I noticed today. Most plants have cut their water intake. Remember it happening before so I wanted to note it. I am going from watering every 2 to 3 days to 4 or 5. Most all growth is done. Just building buds size now. Hydro people wouldn't notice it as much as soil people. You kind of get into a used to certain watering times it is easy to over water at this time. Got some Cal/Mag coming. For the BH Going with Mi suggestion and try it next. I will continue using the lower PH water for these plants. I had to replace everything after the PM thing. So I am waiting for it to get here. I tossed anything that wasn't essential during the clean up.
Another observation. With taller plants in 3 gallon pots it is easy to watch for when the plants want water. I can easily wait tell the lower leaves are wilting to water. There is so much plant mass and soil it holds moister better. Last grow, I was rushed and had smaller plants the whole plant would start to wilt if under watered slightly. No chance over watering this way.

I have a auto that looks like that. I loaded up on calmag. Starting to look better. But I totally agree about over fertilizing. Better to let it go if it's almost finished anyway

Hey MI One of those Blueberry Headbands is still getting worse. First time I have a problem like this. Cal/Mag arrives tomorrow. I am going to try it. What is weird is the effected leaves are going higher in the plant. It started in the middle leaves and is working its way up. Just fan leaves. The small leaves on the buds are not effected. I was going to post a couple pics but this damn site won't let me right now. biggest thing is did your problems work their way up the plant?

Had to water today so the Blueberry headband will have to wait for the Cal/ Mag nuits. Had to do something so I added a 10-12-3 guano with the low PH water. Maybe this will do the trick. better to try and fail then let this plant keep going down hill. Only 1 is having real troubles. Then it is only on 2 or 3 branches. The others are not doing as bad.
For every great plant we get. There are going to be 2 or 3 problem plants. Still got to love this hobbie.

On the bright side the rest of the tent is going along as expected. Most are showing low nitrogen and everything got 12-10-3 guano. probably only 1 more go with nuits before I flush tell the end. Starting to see a few hairs starting to turn red. Don't see anything in the Purple Betty that would suggest seeds but I will take it late into flower so any that are there can muture. Not sure how many strains that do it but PB can be left in flower well past prime with little trouble. Some need it to form all the purple they can. Here is the tent.

I have no idea how people even find my journal. I have to go back to old postings to find it just so I can make a new entry. My tech savy friends might find a opening here to help a guy out with a short cut LMAO.
With that said here are a few updates. Pretty much thinking about myself the last couple days. Going a whole 36 hrs without looking at them. Now that's scary. I doused the Blueberry Headband with Cal/Mag just before I left. No telling what that plant is going to look like when I get back. I hope to see something other then a continuing down word spiral.
I was trimming the Male PB so I could dry it and harvest any pollen that was left. Saw a puff of pollen when I did so I am letting it go tell I get back. The only plant that has no brown hairs is a M.O.B. by TH seeds I think. I am going to give the male a good shake over it then give it another 5 or 6 weeks to finish any seeds. Time line should work by the look of it or close anyway. After doing that the plant will be grown another couple days before I hang it dry and the harvest any pollen left after it is completely dry. Looks like there will be some when I do. It will be used to try and pollinate the best Blueberry female this next grow. I wish I had timed this better. At least with all the strains one is maturing slow enough to make a attempt. I did atemped to do the PB female and I might end up with seeds from it in the end, fingers crossed.
While I am going to continue trying the feminized thing. My window for breeding may be closing for a long time. I need seeds to grow. While price is not a huge issue living on a limited budget is. I am now going to make 2 runs with 2 different males for a few hybrids. Not all will work but most will be smokable at least. While recreating a strain is very difficult, hybrids less so. Going with solid genetics for this. Blueberry is what most breeders of will never see. A hybrid bred for so long and so well it has become stable. So of course I will do what any smart person would do. Jump right on that band wagon and use it too. Blueberry has be bred to anything worth a shit over the years. Going to hit some of the newer strains with it. Triple Cheese and Super Lemon Haze are 2 of them.

Ok here is some stuff about growing LMAO. Had lots to do today. Time to pull everything out so I could wire up the fixture to the top of the tent. It is air cooled so I can get away with this. Not that close anyway. While everything was out we had class pictures taken. Propped up and corralled everything for one last time so nothing falls over to bad. This will be the last time most of these plants will be moved. They are getting to big and shit is going to start falling over. Ok here goes first up is what room is left at the top of the tent.
Crown Royal is doing really good. The smell on this one is really starting come out now.
CBDdurban is another impressive plant. looks like this one could produce pretty good if those buds keep getting bigger like they should. Really surprised about the crystal production. Never grown a CBD plant and knew they looked the same but for some reason I didn't expect it to look like this.

Here are the 2 Blueberry Headband. My favorite strain so of course these are the ones that are giving me problems. They don't look like they are going to produce much which is fine I just wish they were healthier. High hopes for the Cal/Mag.
This is the Purple Betty clone. This plant is 4 times the size of the mother. That grow was rushed but holy crap. Just goes to show you some plants need age to produce well.

Next up are the 2 C-99. While both looked the same early on the are different now. Both low on nuits but this strain can finish in as little as 7 weeks so it is hard to give them to much now. The bigger one has half of its hairs red already so it will be the first to finish. Smell is changing right now so I don't know where it was going. Spicy before but now it is more pineapplely.
This Afgooie is kicking ass. Very happy with it. Basic Afghani smell so far, hope that changes to something better but it is the taste that really matters. As for that we will have to wait.
Last we have the M.O.B. another freebie seed that is looking pretty damn good. No hairs have turned red so even though we are in week 5 of flower I pollinated this whole plant with the reversed PB male. Hope at least some took. This plant looks like it will go 10 weeks anyway so seeds should be fine. The berry smell on this one is getting pretty good. It and the PB berry smell will blend well good together.

Here's the "Money" shot. LMAO
Finally we have a look at everything all propped up for the run to the end.

Jack thats a badass brookie! Hows the calmag working? I really like your breeding project, thats really smart as expensive as they are nowdays. Overall your garden is looking really nice. Your gonna have a nice harvest :)

Still up in the air about the Cal/Mag. I think it is going to work ok. Nothing else to try now. A bunch more wrong choices is just going to fuck this plant up even more. Only one is really bad. The freaky one is a lot better off. here is the sick one
What do you think? Still look like Cal/Mag deficiencies?
This C-99 is kicking ass. Finishing as fast as it started.
Anywhere from a week to 3 weeks now. Going to let trichome color make the call. Looks a lot like one of the 3 C-99 copies I had. The only good one, hope the high is better. It has that basic Afghani structure like it should.

It's way worse looking now. I think it's not a calmag issue. I'd just ride it out as you said. Some plants just seem to be freaks and don't want to conform. The c99 looks great! It's nice to have a fast finisher

Yes it is. That C-99 is on track to finish in around 7 weeks. That is fast as hell. From the look of the Blueberry Headband this morning the Cal/Mag might be kicking in. I sure hope so. I have been trimming bad leaves so I can watch for new damage. That may have been why it looks worse. Plus I took the pic to show the damage. Something I never do. I love beautiful plants and normally only show the good plants. Not to make it look like I know more then I do. Only because sick plants aren't as pretty so there is no reason to post pics. Part of the problem now is that the plants are in full flower with little upward growth. So water intake has now decreased to the point that new nutrients are not pulled from the soil as fast. Can't risk anything else but it will be a lesson learned. Maybe I will get lucky and have it turn around for the last month of flower.

Glad to have you here Mi. Other then that I would be talking to myself LOL. I have found that journals help me help myself. So it is still doing some good even without tons of followers. I am not a ton of followers type of guy anyway.
Talking out shit helps me thing of more things, Plus it makes room for new thoughts. Sometimes you have to get old ideas out of the way for newer better thoughts to have room.

I have started journals before but never seemed to finish them. With soil there is not a whole lot of daily info to give. With the growth rates I am dealing with even week to week can get boring. It might be boring to journal the grow but that is only part of it for me. Plants and genetics are the forefront of my mind. They had to take the back seat for over 30 years its their time now.
Welcome to my world folks. With a new vented hood I will have plants going most of the time. So There will be "Plants" involved in this thread. There will also be a bunch of random thoughts that run through my brain. I only have 2 main interests so most of my random thoughts revolve around Marijuana and its genetics. I can't say I love growing. Other then maybe a tomato plant or 2 I don't grow anything else. So its not growing I love. Its that one plant. One plant that has more personalities then any other. Since the day back in 1985 when I got my hands on my very first marijuana seed catalog. I have been intrigued by marijuana genetics. I knew from a friend the place was legit. I placed my first order and my world changed for ever. From growing up on the west coast I knew genetics was everything. Since that day I read every book, catalog, and web site I could find. It is so much more to me then just a plant. I now know its been the genetics all a long. All those years that I never grew a plant. I grew and bred millions of plants in my mind. I still do all the time. I find it goes faster if I do it in my mind then in real life.
With thoughts, plants, and genetics combined there is enough to journal. To some that know me it will just be a place to ramble. Maybe if I get some of the random crap out of my brain there will be room for new thoughts.
Haha love the opening man I’m in buddy

I have learned some here. Mostly I just run my mouth LMAO.
Here are the "New" random thoughts. After deciding to go with males this fall for seed projects. It have been running through my mind how best to spread genetics around. I only have a couple strains that will be solid enough to risk not having tons of choices for a breeding male. So far I have chosen a F4 Blueberry and Jacks Cleaner 2. The Blueberry is a stable strain which should have predictable pheno's. I have a couple people to help me find what I need to find.
Terpene and THC levels are so much higher and more pronounced now days. I want to choose mostly newer genetics. Blueberry has been crossed to damn near everything so no use doing some of them over. Them main one is backwards but I hope it will still work. I love Blueberry Headband. With the genetics I have the hybrid would be Headband Blueberry. For those that don't know it matters. I want the Headband "high" I don't care how the rest comes out as long as that quality is present. I can always self the best one in time. It just has to be there for me to find.
The newbie on this next grow is going to be Chocoloco. I invested a ton of money on 100 Chocolope feminized seeds. They all hermied. I have 3 or 4 other strains with good chocolate flavor. I was going to work on a Triple Chocolate. But that is all for a later date. I have 10 of the Chocoloco so I can run them in 2 or 3 grows. For those that don't know "Chocoloco" is Chocolope x Chocolate Thai. At around 3/4 Chocolate Thai it should be a hell of a sativa. I want a mostly or totally sativa for a hybrid with the Blueberry. The others will be a hybrid IE: Headband, Bluedream, and one Indica or mostly Indica I haven't chosen yet.
Here is more on the Chocoberry. What really got me interested is the Thai genetics in Blueberry. Blueberry is listed as a indica or mostly indica so most people don't realize all the Thai genetics in it. D.J. Short worked with Upland Thai, Lowland Thai, Afghani and maybe Chocolate Thai. I could check my books but it doesn't really matter. The 2 Thai's is enough to peak my interest in a hybrid. Plus it is something different. Chocolate and Berries could make something special.
In the end it is all about the high for me. A 19% Dark Cherry Soda was 10 times better then a 28% Bruce Banner as far as I was concerned. So how strong this one is shouldn't matter. It is just weather or not I like it. Can't see a whole lot going wrong here though. I may not be going through tons of plants to choose my breeders but I have put enough thought into them. The fact that everything about a strain goes into why I want to use it helps give them a chance to be great I was truly looking forward to a Super Lemon Haze x Blueberry hybrid. The Chocoloco has a much higher up side. Some of those Thai genetics are going to come out of the Blueberry with this hybrid. How it will I don't know but I can't wait to see. I am a big fan of "Dank" this should be at least that.
