Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

So which plant gets the OK to go into flower next, Lilly or Ace? They've both outgrown your veg space Rad. :laughtwo:

They are both only about 16-18" tall. I used to wait until 30-36" tall to flower, but I'm trying out grows starting short and getting gradually taller to find the 'sweet size' for graduating into flower. The last pair were 12&13" tall.

I'd really like to put them in on the same day. Borderliner & Amherst Sour Diesel are both at 59 days since flip.

2 weeks ago, Borderliner was full cloudy, then she put out new pistils and new clear trichomes, still no amber but all her pistils are fully brown again and her trichomes are looking a bit wrinkly. Those extra 2 weeks probably added an ounce to her harvest weight. Borderliner probably gets the chop tomorrow morning.

Amherst Sour Diesel has just been plugging along, mostly fresh looking pistils with all clear trichomes. She has put on less weight, and doesn't look any more ready for harvest than she did 3 weeks ago. She is a mystery.

As I said, I'd like to start them as a pair, since they share a light, but ASD and Borderliner are 2 feet taller than Lilly and Ace Mix.
Currently I have a pile of soil sharing a spot with Bubba's Gift.
To add one veg girl to flower, I could harvest borderliner, move my soil next to ASD, and move the taller veg girl, Lilly in next to BG, as BG is only about 1 foot tally than Lilly.

- - -

Another option would be to take my soil out of the flower area and move both veg girls into flower.

Then I have to make room for soil in the veg area, which probably means giving up my chair where I sit and chat with the veg girls.
But I was going to want to move soil out of the flower area anyway. I really never planned for a warm space to cook soil. It's time.

Moving both into flower is the best option. The soil shouldn't stay in the flower area - that's prime real estate !

- - - Thanks for making me think this through :)

Yea i got 2 totes in my living room cooking soil rite now lol

You are not worthless!

and two simple questions for you (and Keltic Blue)

How much area does your flowering light cover?

Are your buds dank? (I think I know the answer to that one :) )

My eyes do have a problem with blurple, even with glasses, but I don't spend much time in the flower area. The most time I spend is carryng the girls in and out on foliar day.

My foot print is 1.5 ft by 2.5 feet. My silly short tent is what makes it hot. I have intake and exhaust running. But i still cooked the lights. I have plans to repair them but I just don't need them at this point. The buds grew well but the heat made them less dense than they could have been.

:party:Borderliner Harvest:party:

I harvested Borderliner today - 60 days in the flower area.
At 46 days her pistils were brown and trichomes were 100% cloudy, bud weight probaby 1.5-2.0 ounces,
then she grew new white pistils with new clear trichomes.
At 60 days her pistils were brown and trichomes were 100% cloudy, bud weight probaby 2.5-3.0 ounces.

Borderliner at harvest time

Borderliner branches went into flower fairly even and came out fairly even.

20170414_100825-1.jpg

After trimming off the fan leaves with long petioles, her branches were every which way :)

20170414_104512-1.jpg

Borderliner had more green fan leaves left at harvest than any previous grow.

OK, you've convinced me to hold off as long as I can make myself on my CBD Critical Cure. She's at day 49 now, and they projected 50-60 days. I'd like to see her beef up like that.

Congrats on the harvest. :yahoo:  Well done buckaroo. :high-five:

Graduation Day - Delicatessen Lilly and Ace Mix

Delicatessen Lilly went into the flower area today at 18" tall and 21" across.

20170414_150540-1.jpg

I trimmed off the tips of leaves that had run into the CFL tubes in veg.

20170414_150520-1.jpg

I trimmed off the lower leaves and branches to reduce popcorn buds and encourage growth higher in the canopy.

20170414_150359.jpg

Ace mix went into the flower area today at 17" tall and 18" across.

20170414_155215-1.jpg

Ace Mix canopy is a bit irregular, but she can handle that :)

20170414_155226-1.jpg

Ace Mix lower branches had the same defoliation

20170414_155250.jpg

Today is the first time my flower tent has been filled to full capacity (4)

20170414_160155.jpg

I moved Bubba's gift (25? days) up front with Amherst Sour Diesel (60 days) to share the light closer to the harvest door.

20170414_162400-1.jpg

Bubba's gift interior foliage is a mess - an almost solid mass. Should I defoliate or just let her grow as is ?

20170414_162407-1.jpg

The girls in the veg area have some extra elbow room - they are all in 1 gal pots. Soil should be ready in 4 days.

20170414_162550-1.jpg

I moved some soil into veg, and my humidifier up under the grow lights - Still space for a chair in the veg area :)

20170414_162801-1.jpg

P.S. My harvest day reshuffle activities were interrupted for several minutes to watch a falcon bath in a rain puddle next door (where the driveway meets the street.) The falcon ignored traffic and was bathing for about 20 minutes while we stood on the porch and watched, then it flew into our tree and preened before flying away.

I think it was a Peregrine Falcon, but I need new glasses and didn't find the binoculars. It also looked like it could be a Merlin, but didn't fly like one.

Looking good! Please do clean up the underside of that one....it will perform much better.

Hey there Rad - was reading about your soil dilemma or challenge... Can't you use Doc Buds soil no-til.. or maybe a variation on that theme. I've been doing a Sorta-no-til. I empty out a good portion of the last plants rootball and extra space... take about 1/2 of the soil out of the container and add in new around the up-potted plant and top dress. The smaller up-potted plant always has fresh. just a thought... don't know much about the brix thing.

I put that soil dug out of the old root ball back into the bin and mix it with the new soil that's been cooking.

I have a 2nd bin of fresh mix in reserve and just rotate that in when the inside bin is empty.

Soil microbes can live and thrive at much lower temps than you think. I have one bin inside I use for up-potting... one outside with fresh mix... I've had soil that was 1/2 frozen and the soil that wasn't frozen had Santa's beard thru out..Frozen soil may have too... it was well frozen. Different microbes live at different temps.. This is coming from studying composting.. since I don't compost indoors I'm always trying to figure out a faster way to make compost. My life long challenge.

1 bin for me = 4 cu ft. I use 2 of them in rotation. 1 outside 1 inside. Clutter in the house clutter in the yard..balance = problem solved.

Don't tell my wife I said that! J/K

Perpetual for me is 1-2 plants per week chop... rotate in largest VEG plants. Be nice if the ladies would just cooperate and do their thing on schedule but ya know how ladies wanna be... get on Buffalo time (lets take a puff and think about it) schedule be damned... That said I haven't chopped a plant in 2 weeks. hahahaha

I am naturally tempted to run Doc's soil as a no-till, but doc puts in another batch of amendment each round of growing, so it needs another round of cooking. That's what doc does. That's what doc says to do. As long as I am following an evolving recipe, I need to get the basic recipe working great before I even suggest tweeking the recipe - For me that could take years :) I rationalize that I am giving a month of fallow time between runs for the soil to recover.

My immediate goal is to limit the amount of cooking soil to a small enough size that I have a warm place to hold it in the winter. The other option would be to cook up enough soil outside (when it is warm) that I won't run out of pre-cooked chilly soil through the winter. In a couple of months I should take stock. I aim to average 1 harvest per month (not week.) If the system starts working, and I recook soil 3 times for a total of 4 rounds, I won't need another bale of Peat Moss for a year or two. :)

Outside in the garden, I marked out a planter bed on each end of the porch by defining rectangular areas with stone curb looking beams of bedded limestone. Earlier in the week I had defined a long bed in front of the porch with the same limestone beams. I used up exactly every limestone beam that was piled at the money corner of the house since we purchased as is - rehab supplies and all. The couple remodeling the house before us may have had other plans for the limestone, but I like my plans better.

I've also been trenching and digging up enough soil that it must seem normal to the neighbors to see me pull 5 cubic feet of soil (two small garden cart loads) out of the one planter bed area, use it to build up a berm, and replace it with topsoil from across the garden. By June, seeing cooking soil and used soil appear in the garden will seem pretty normal to the neighbors. Just with a few bulbs and garden features, we are already drawing more human, bird, and butterfly traffic to our side of the street:)

Can you tell I've been non-420 gardening?

Back to indoor.

After a prior engagement post harvest yesterday (4 hours + of auction,) I had time to oven dry/decarb 1.4g of trimmed popcorn buds at 170 for about 70 minutes. Smokes like a dream.

I hung the washed and trimmed buds that were in a mesh hamper since yesterday. The initial dry of the stems stiffened them, making for easy hanging.

Two Boys

At the top of Page 61 (this page, and 3 days ago, as I type this) Sue is using overgrown and my veg area in the same sentence... hold that thought.

The Grow room smelled different today, without Borderliner in the room, yes but also .... the smell turned out to be boys.

Hawaiian Skunk clone in the Flower area - is a boy.

A nice looking plant to lose (I have another seed)

20170416_171038-1.jpg

So the other large plant in veg, Tangerine Widow, is also unsexed.

Those little lego men don't seem to work near as well as those Taoist monks in the role of plant spirit.
The lego woman on the ATV protected her plant. Girl Power plant spirit.
Sure these were the only two unsexed seeds, but lego men, you are fired from the plant spirit guides.

There is nothing overgrown about my veg area today :) With my two largest girls gone to be with the boys (sleeping with the woms soon,) the veg area is down to 5 rooted plants and a few rooting twigs in the cloner bucket.

20170416_193342.jpg

Ak 47 and Borderliner clones are now the largest, with Ace Mix and Delicatessen Lilly seedlings close behind. Just as close, a Lilly clone folowed by other clones coming out of the clone bucket.

Give it a month, 2 of these girls should be ready for flowering

Sorry to hear that. The Lego guys need to be fired. Maybe try the power puff girls next time. I think they have more super powers than Lego men.

While reading your post I kept thinking that I better read the forum rules before I start a pollen tent. I kept imagining all the things Ken and Barbie would do to encourage the plants. :thedoubletake:

I know.

Tie one headless 11" fashion doll to the trunk of plant and all of a sudden you get a reputation

:)

p.s. It's probably best not to use wriggle-proof double-column ties, one might tip thier hand
