Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

Man.... nice to see your garden up and growing again. Seems like it's been forever since we've seen MJ growing in your world.

It was only 3-4 months away from growing, but the restart time until harvest seems like it takes FOREVER!

I really got spoiled by monthly harvests - even when they were only small to middling size

Hey Rad! I love my root pouch #10's! Next time I will fill them up more but still like a little room at the top to add to plus don't want water to spill over the sides. I scored the roots on 2 plants, one is thriving in bloom now but the other is pretty much a lost cause, not sure what happened to her....? It was my carnival clone, she will be culled if she doesn't improve soon. Have a Happy New Year!

Since it is thinner, a sheet aluminum 'window' made out of chimney flashing should conduct 400-1000 times more heat as the same size glass window - that's almost as efficient as an open window :)

Have you already got a hole in your wall the size of a window? Also, if you are going with aluminum, why not just splice together some sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil from your kitchen. It seems counter intuitive that one would get much of a temperature bump on the cold side when the temperature differential between the two rooms would be so small.

My 'wall' is a simple sheet of 1/2 MDF plywood. I can add a window any size and shape I want. I think I'll add a window just a bit narrower than the width of aluminum foil.

To transplant, or not to transplant, that is the question.

I took a look at the roots of the Amhearst Sour Diesel. Lots of roots on the bottom.

20161230_135103-1.jpg

Very few roots in the top half.

20161230_135146-1.jpg

I'm tempted to think the roots won't grow more in this pot, so I should transplant.

I also think I need to water more frequently as the top half of the pot did not grow many roots.
Recently, I've been watering every 3-6 days.

Suggestions??

If doc doesn't stop by soon, maybe go over to his Q&A journal and ask. 3-6 days seems pretty often to water in veg, I think you want to go as long as possible between watering so roots are seeking out water. Plant looks good but not sure about to transplant or not.....

Actually, it looks like the bottom soil stayed a little too moist, hence the thick roots, so less frequent drenching would be better. If the top dries out too fast, you can always dump a pint of water over the top between drenches.

I tend to upcan a lot sooner than Doc and some of the others. That looks ready to me. :slide:

Borderliner isn't a runt - just 20 days younger. :)

I'll give her all the time in veg that she needs. (More on that later)

I DID enjoy Yellow Submarine

As a man a handful of years too young for the summer of '69 and being drafted into Vietnam, I disrespected The Beatles because they were over-hyped, and idolized - like Twiggy and JFK. Some where in the 90s I started listeneing to the broad range of Beatles' tunes and noticed how once they joined up with Alan Parsons they did an amazing amount of innovation. There is a ton of stuff that the Beatles recorded that has resonated for decades. So I enjoy them now like I couldn't enjoy them as a young man.

(Plus the animation in Yellow Submarine reminds me of the fine Terry Gilliam work done as part of Monty Python. )

I'm not really impressed with my girls. In my prior growing, where I was basically faking it and winging it, all of my plants took a long time to Veg, usually 4-7 months. 80 days after planting seeds, they just don't seem as big as they should after 80 days. When I was growing 25-30 plants at a time, I didn't keep track of veg times, just moved them along when they were bigger. After that time where NOTHING left veg in over 100 days, all growth was good growth.

My girls look good and seem really happy, but my expectations were for faster growth. It may be that I have spent too much time watching journals where autos turn out 2 ounce harvests in 70 days (see ==> Yankeetoker At It Again - C99 Pineapple Chunk In Soil Under LED Lights ) So ...

Yes I am proud of my lttle girls.
... but ...
I have this overwhelming urge for them to grow faster that I haven't experienced since I planted my Aloe Vera seeds 18 months ago.

I'm hoping my almost reasonable desires will tone down and let me enjoy the routine of growing.
I will go back to basics and commit to flowering no cannabis before it's time - no matter the number of days.
Having a second batch of seedlings should help

Thanks all for all your support.
Loving your new grow space, wish I could expand a bit....interested in following along now that you are using Doc's kit.

Thanks for the shout out!

P.S. Took down the Bubble gum auto yesterday....

Hopefully almost 2 oz dry...

Looks like 2 oz - but you could always leave more stem to cover your bet.

Have you grown Bubble Gum Auto before?
I have yet to grow autos. The fast, strong auto seeds are tempting, but I really like to clone and repeat grow my plants.

I'm concerned I lost a couple of seeds that have not sprouted in 9 days. I have more of what I'm calling Tangerine Widow, but that was my only G13 Labs Pineapple Express. I'll give them until next year.

Next spring will be my first foray into the auto world...just a couple for shits and giggles...seeing what a few have done here on the mag with them, has me saying... what the hell...expand my horizons...wishing you continued success and a Happy New Year!...cheerz...h00k...:hookah:

A touch of logic says 'gee... you got roots on the outside wrapping upwards now... it's just gonna start getting really dense... the sooner you spread it all out, the sooner it can expand.'
Of course, logic often lies viciously to me, but I still toss my hat in with the others and would urge you towards the upcanning side.

I want to extend an apology to the HiBrix community here. I haven't been doing my foiliars. I started late because I forgot. I only did 2 because neither of my sprayers could do a quality spray in such a small quantity.

I'll do better. I ordered a flairasol about 2 weeks ago. I'm nearly pacing waiting for it to arrive.

I am happy with my girls, but they are growing slowly. I just don't want folks to think this is how a Hi-Brix grow is supposed to progress - It should be better.

This grow, in a winter basement, is turning out to be more of a 'first grow' than my first grow. The part that makes it good is that I KNOW whenever I finally reach harvest, I will have high quality buds, high quality clones, and high quality soil to grow some more.

Thanks for your patience folks.

No need to apologize man, as long as they are green you have nothing to be ashamed of. You will see what they do in the big pots. And last time I checked they were pristine green and ready to go in the big pots. I bet you will have amazing success. So ditch that frown man and smile at your girls and they will smile back. :Namaste:

My first time growing the BG auto....it was a pretty easy plant to grow, but I won't grow autos exclusively. Gonna drop a couple of photos in a couple of weeks while my Gorilla Glue finishes up....

Looking to grow a Blue Dream photo to take some clones....

Don't stress about the slow growth. Lighting, temp, and humidity can make a difference there and a basement in winter is not the ideal on any of those without some serious tweaking. Plus, if you're following the wet/dry cycle, you are growing roots as opposed to plant. I've seen people plant the same time as me and surpass my plants in size. They'll get there and the high brix bud is nice. One downside though is that you have to clean your grinder and pipe more often as it gums things up with all the stickiness. 😁

Repotting day for Amherst Sour Diesel and AK47

I decided to repot the two largest girls, Amherst Sour Diesel and AK47.

AK47, got the first pot, a 10 gal Geopot.
AK47 has yellowing leaves which started after I accidentlly splattered most of the foliar feed for 4 plants on just her in big drops of water.
Maybe she's just hungrier.

20170102_155726-1.jpg

I scratched and tore the rootball a bit with my fingers - then sprinkled Roots! on the roots and soil beneath
then backfilling and immersing the pot in Transplant water (15ml per 3 gallons.)
AK47 drank about 3 gallons in 30 minutes.

Amherst Sour Diesel went into a 7 gallon Geopot. I didn't plan for her to get a smaller pot, she just did. She drank about 3.5 gallons.

Buddha's Gift w/ladybug. I am planning to repot her soon, but I need to make some space choices with the non-420 pots

Here you can see the different heights under the one lamp.

20170102_212616-1.jpg

For now, I manage the heights difference by tilting the light. I can't tilt the light effectively when I transplant the next two girls.
I'll need to manage heights another way

Since I am spending most of my time in the veg stall, I also hung a couple of satellite speakers.
