Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

A carbon filter is the main odor control solution. I am hoping to avoid the expense of a new in-line unit.

I looked up HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) and you are on the right track. An HRV places fresh air alongside used air separated by a highly thermoconductive (High U-value) surface. The goal being to transfer most of the heat between the air flows before replacing the air.

My goal is to do half of that; transfer heat through a highly thermoconductive surface without exchanging the air. Common materials that are highly thermoconductive are: aluminium, brass, copper, diamond, gold, nickel, platinum, silver, and various steels. The best conductor in that list, by far, is diamond, but a thin sheet of any of those materials will be good ( and diamond would also allow light leaks :) Copper sheeting is the second best choice, but any of them are good as long as there is airflow along both sides of the sheet.

We will have regular airflow along both sides of the wall seperating flower from veg (air circulation fans) so the only thing I have to do to transfer a bunch of heat is to create a "window" of thin, opaque sheet metal between the veg and flower areas.

Thaks for the inspiration!

Sounds awesome Rad! Look forward to hearing how this goes. Before reading this I was going to suggest a propane space heater but I guess propane can be expensive too. That is what I have but my tents are in my main living space for now which presents the problem of it being too hot for us and occasionally dipping too low for the plants because of that. Wish I could use some solar heat.

Happy Holidays Rad!

The propane is a good idea, IMO. I have a propane C02 generator and it's basically a BBQ burner. It heats up the space pretty well.

Winter Solstice Celebration

Last night the family decided to do a winter solstice celebration - out with the old year. Goodbye and good riddance to the sources of bullshit in the past year.

We started out with a bull pinata from the Mexican grocery filled with candies from the Asian grocery across the street.
Photos here ==> Radogast's Non-420 Garden Creation Thread

Following the symbolic destruction of the old year, we each planted a seed for the upcoming year.

G13 Labs Pineapple Express (feminized) - Trainwreck x Maui Wowie. 4 phenos,: 2 indica dominant, 2 sativa dominant

20161221_175925.jpg

home pollinated Tangerine Widow (regular) - probably (Tangerine x Blue Dream) x White Widow, indica dominant

I sliced the fiber optic cable that provides my internet - I'll be back after a repair visit -
maybe not until next year.

The plants look fine :)

Oh man, that sounds like a plot of construction themed drama. Hope you got it fixed alright. Cheers!:cheertwo:

Thank You :thanks:

Merry Christmas Rad!!!:xmas:

Thank You :xmas:

Happy Christmas bro.

Bumble's Humble Hive! It's Alive

Peaceful blazing

Thank You :xmas:

No huge drama - I am truly grateful to be living with a loving family. At least a dozen WiFi devices in the house and no bitchin' and complaining about web access. It was like being back in the 80s and the dawn of the VCR - nothing on TV except what the rabbit ears pick up (7 channels - 5 useless) and whatever recordings we had lying around.

I had never actualy watched the movie 'Yellow Submarine.' The boy picked up a 60th anniversary Lego kit and assembled it with Yellow Submarine playing in the background. The girl borrowed Risk: Lord of the Rings Trilogy version and we finished 2.2 games with the LOTR trilogy playing in the background. The .2 game was when I spilled rum over the new-in-the-box gameboard. The owner said too bad it wasn't a Pirates of the Carribean version - so I may or may not be buying a replacement. He seems to want to negotiate coming over and playing with us a few times to balance out the rum flood.

Disabling the internet on christmas eve eve. Spilling rum all over the game board (the girl was totally winning with a lock on Gondor.) Playing spoiler in the other Risk games and pissing off the women. I was hard to live with, but everyone was real nice to me anyway.

Hahaha! Sounds like a wonderful day Rad. Thanks for the chuckles. :laughtwo:

From my loving heart to your loving family Rad,

Remember those seeds planted on Solstice? 2 of 4 seeds sprouted yesterday.

The environmentals have been very stable for about a week.

AK47 - The largest of the vegging girls (10" tall x 12" wide).

20161226_143036-1.jpg

She has recovered from most of her foliar splatter spots. 4 lower leaves turned brown and fell off (one visible trapped in branches.)
I am waiting for a new sprayer before I foliar spray again.

AK47 (canopy view) - I spread the 4 arms wide and multiple bud sites are forming in the middle.

20161226_143041-1.jpg

AK47 (Central canopy view) - She looks happy to me.

20161226_143047-1.jpg

Borderliner (7" high x 11" wide) - She also looks happy, despite being the runt of the first litter.

20161227_153724-1.jpg

Borderliner (Canopy view) - There is potential for 3-4 more good bud sites if I spread the arms wider - I am considering leaving her at 4 main bud sites.

Welcome little ones. :battingeyelashes:

Rad, I'm mighty impressed with your girls. Are you as impressed as I suspect you are?

I'm a perpetual defender of runts. Borderliner doesn't look like a runt though, just a plant that got a late start, but very happy.

Unless you plan to get her in tent sooner I'd try developing the extra bud sites. With extra time she looks like she could be good producer. I've read that every 10-11 days of veg can double yield. Something I'm sure you've considered.

Hope you enjoyed Yellow Submarine. We had a singalong outside last summer with our 4H group. Some of the kids knew the words better than the parents. Lot's of fun. And glad your family puts up with you. We'll do the same here. :)

Borderliner isn't a runt - just 20 days younger. :)

I'll give her all the time in veg that she needs. (More on that later)

I DID enjoy Yellow Submarine

As a man a handful of years too young for the summer of '69 and being drafted into Vietnam, I disrespected The Beatles because they were over-hyped, and idolized - like Twiggy and JFK. Some where in the 90s I started listeneing to the broad range of Beatles' tunes and noticed how once they joined up with Alan Parsons they did an amazing amount of innovation. There is a ton of stuff that the Beatles recorded that has resonated for decades. So I enjoy them now like I couldn't enjoy them as a young man.

(Plus the animation in Yellow Submarine reminds me of the fine Terry Gilliam work done as part of Monty Python. )

I'm not really impressed with my girls. In my prior growing, where I was basically faking it and winging it, all of my plants took a long time to Veg, usually 4-7 months. 80 days after planting seeds, they just don't seem as big as they should after 80 days. When I was growing 25-30 plants at a time, I didn't keep track of veg times, just moved them along when they were bigger. After that time where NOTHING left veg in over 100 days, all growth was good growth.

My girls look good and seem really happy, but my expectations were for faster growth. It may be that I have spent too much time watching journals where autos turn out 2 ounce harvests in 70 days (see ==> Yankeetoker At It Again - C99 Pineapple Chunk In Soil Under LED Lights ) So ...

Yes I am proud of my lttle girls.
... but ...
I have this overwhelming urge for them to grow faster that I haven't experienced since I planted my Aloe Vera seeds 18 months ago.

I'm hoping my almost reasonable desires will tone down and let me enjoy the routine of growing.
I will go back to basics and commit to flowering no cannabis before it's time - no matter the number of days.
Having a second batch of seedlings should help

Thanks all for all your support.

An interesting idea Rad. I'm a bit curious as to how large a "window of thin sheet metal" would have to be in order to induce a significant heat transfer between two spaces where the temperature differential would only be 20-30 degrees maximum. I would imagine it would need to be fairly large but I wouldn't know how to apply the math in order to come up with a guess. My son is the engineer. I'm just a flaky artist.:cheesygrinsmiley:

Oh man looking great! What will be the final pot sizes? I mean they will pick up the pace with bigger roots. I'm growing on 18/6 and they stop at some stage, grow down there and them boom goes the canopy! Gaining 1.5 inches a day with 8 main tops. Just marvelous. I love good soil. Good luck man and great to hear you are doing well! Thanks and have a fine day! :Namaste:

The way I read the charts, steels are 16-50 times as conductive as glass where as aluminum is about 400 times as conductive as glass.

Since it is thinner, a sheet aluminum 'window' made out of chimney flashing should conduct 400-1000 times more heat as the same size glass window - that's almost as efficient as an open window :)

I plan to move into 7-10 gallon pots. In my previous grows, I would have moved them into larger pots already.

Thanks for the idea !

I'll take pictures of roots tomorrow :)

Opinions on repotting will be well recieved.
