That seems to be the case about everywhere.

The grains do look a bit dark have no idea if that is bad or not.. wondered if the water would just steam up under the tin foil on top of lids. Maybe the foil wasn't tight enough around the lids. Good to know about the heating mat.. was gonna use a seedling heating mat but it might get too hot.
I'm technically in the country but less than 1/8 mile in any direction I can be in 3 different city limits. I have a half acre lot on a small cul de sac and I'm within a 5 min drive of anything I need. Not exactly the country living I grew up with in MN where we have about 1,000 acres to run around on the farm but it's better than living in a development in the city. I wish I had a 5 acre lot but unless you want to be in the open desert it will cost you your first born where I'm at.
The wet polyfill tells me you got the inside wet which is why the grains clumped. The extra water helped gelatinize the grains into clumps. I don't think you will be able to get them to work, I've never worked with something like it however. I think you did everything right up to the PCing, get the foil really crunched around the lid of the jar. Your grains were pretty dry going in so there wouldn't have been enough water inside the jar to steam and soak the polyfill like it was. It had to have come from the foil.
Next go around you'll get it and you'll be a pro at it.
Yeah I had watched that one. A few things they didn't explain, Like where did the liquid come from that was in the syringesHad someone ask me about spore prints and how you make syringes. Here's a video I enjoy but it doesn't describe what he is doing nor is he doing any sort of sterile procedure (which is fine but increases your chance of contaminates in your syringe and therefore your future grain spawn) so I will describe below the video how to add a few more sterile steps to decrease your chances of contaminates.
- First off do everything you saw in the video inside a SAB,
- Wipe down everything with iso,
- PC a few half pint jars of water (using as many jars and as much water as you require),
- Boil some water to rinse out new syringes with (suck up the boiling water and squirt out a few times),
- Use a flame sterilized knife, scalpel, razor, or whatever when scraping the spores off the print, and
- Use the half pint jars of PC'd water only when cool then scrape the spores inside to be sucked up with the syringe. This is why it's good to have an idea of how many syringes you are going to make so you can measure out the amount of water you need before PCing. Use 1 jar per strain and as many or even bigger jars if you plan to make a big batch of syringes.

I don't think so, looking at your one photo it looks like you had some of your foil down the side of the jar making a nice space for steam to go up. Only have the foil go around the lid, it makes it easier to seal vs the smooth sides of the jar.
