Prof's Lab: Diary Of A Bedroom Farmer

Well it would seem that my recent run of good luck in the grow room has run out. Earlier I was checking in on the coco plants when I noticed some orange colouring on the strings that I'm using to tie down the branches. upon closer inspection I can see that it is a type of mould which reminds me of the orange slime mould I had last year in my barneys journal. I dont think that it is the same though but I have had to untie all of the plants as you can see the mould climbing the string. I thought that I had it figured out as the fabric pots have been through the washing machine at 90C so they are clean however the string was brought in from outside. The mould starts on the string around the fabric loops so I assumed that the wicking was causing that part of the string to become wet and create an environment for whatever was living on the string to thrive in. You can see it on all of the strings, starting in exactly the same place and beginning to creep up towards the branches. It doesnt appear to be on any of the fabric loops which dont have string attached. My theory seemed sound until I opened up the veg tent and saw exactly the same thing but there is no string in here at all.
I have been doing a lot of reading about mould (again) this afternoon and have decided that it probably isn't a threat to the plants though mould spores aren't a great thing especially if they are in your bedroom. Also I wasn't going to take the chance with the mould coming into direct contact with the plants via the strings so I think removing them was a good idea. Initially I thought that it must be because of the bottom feeding with the water being almost constantly in the tray but I dont think that it is. I found a lot of examples of this kind of mould being on fabric pots that were being watered the normal way. I found examples of it on coco and soil to. Many people said that it isn't like Botrytis and stays on habitable medium which happens to be wet medium. If this was a soil grow then I would allow the pots to dry before waterings which is what is happening in the 100w tent. No problems in there of any sort in regards to mould. With coco though the medium should stay wet constantly.
Here's what I have done and will do in the future. As I've already said first I removed the contaminated strings and threw them on the compost. That mould is still useful believe it or not lol. I then gave the fabric loops a little spray with some ISO solution to combat the visible threat on the pots. I dont know if it will work but I'm sure that it wont cause any harm to try. Today's watering had some H2O2 mixed in as a preventative. I'll incorporate some into the watering's from now on. I'm using 10ml per litre. something I'm considering is transplanting the mothers out of the fabric pots and putting them back into plastic. Mould doesnt like plastic as much as the fabric pots which can get pretty scummy after a little while. There is not much I can do about the flowering plants but for the next round I could use plastic again and see if bottom feeding works as well without the wicking ability of the fabric pots.
I have given the plants another good trim to increase the airflow lower in the tent. The humidity is still good and is well below the danger zone. It has been at around 55% for much of the day and I know that it is about 65% throughout the night. There is also good air movement in the tent which is a bit annoying but seeing mould is a sign that something is not quite right. Anyway here is a pic of some mould that you can't quite see as well with the camera as you can with the naked eye....

So there you have it. I sleep in a mouldy bedroom. Maybe it came from Sauga's rice cake....

I forgot to mention that I was expecting the plants to spring back up once the strings were cut but most didn't. The combination of super cropping and tying them has allowed the branches to heal in a low position. Some may creep back up slowly over the next week so I have done a bit more super cropping for Good measure. Here's a few more pics....

Sorry to hear about the mold and I think you did the right thing by attacking it aggressively rather than pondering if was a good mold or a bad mold (cue Glinda from Oz).

And I think cutting off the restraints while exercising restraint in cutting is a good look on you!
Thanks. They did indeed pop back up overnight but its not too bad. The tent looks a lot less messy now lol....

Time for a peek at the mothers and clones. The bonsai mothers have barely even slowed after their makeover the other day and I could even take a couple clones from them if I really wanted to. The Tropicananna Banana has a hell of a trunk on her already and is super strong. Its like a little tree in a cupboard. It won't be long before we find out if she's any good or not. The rest are looking good too but there is something about the TB.
As I dont have a lot of space I'm cloning underneath the mothers. There is a bit of height to this tent so I was wondering if I could get a shelf in there with a second light set underneath it. That would double the space and allow me to not have to clone like this. Oh well, it seems to be working. Cuttings dont need a lot of light and I'm hoping that this will be enough....

finally we have the cuttings in water. I think I was a little optimistic when I said that I thought that they would be ready by the weekend. I think they will root though as the cuttings still have plenty of life left....

My little outdoor garden is coming along ok. The Auto Purple Gorilla is 12 days old today and looks alright but I'm wondering if she's being a little slow. Despite being outdoors under the sun she's still getting less light than she would be if she was in the tent. The Auto is realistically probably only receiving 12 hours of light and not all of that is decent. Still, she looks pretty good at the moment though I have just fed her with the tea.
I diluted the tea by eye and aimed for around a 1/10 mix. Now that I'm writing that down it seems a little high to me and maybe I should have gone for a slightly weaker first watering.

Here she is today....

White Widow....

I'm convinced now that this one was just a bad seed. It's growing but it is painfully slow. Its a good thing its not costing me anything. I should probably just throw it or maybe I could take it out to the wilderness and set it free....

Hey 420. Its been a lazy day in the bedroom garden today but I have been a busy body outside getting everything ready for planting into pots. I was looking around the land for useful things to salvage for my needs when I discovered an old compost heap in an overgrown corner at the top of the garden. I thought that it looked a bit suspicious as the soil looked familiar. I could see a lot of little white dots mixed in with the soil and also some old rockwool starter cubes. The white dots turned out to be perlite and the compost heap was where the brother in law had been dumping all of his old soil grows from about 10 years ago. It was like discovering pirate treasure lol. What this means is that I have a lot more potting mix complete with perlite, compost and creepy crawlies. One thing which I thought was quite cool was the rockwool cubes looked new as the day that they were thrown in the ground but when I squeezed them then they turned to a sand like dust. I spent some time collecting the soil for my 10 gallon pots but that is non cannabis related though i am tempted to save some for a cannabis grow in the future.
One thing i did today was to decant the smaller, older and definitely more vile anaerobic tea into the newer one. I didn't see the point in having 2 stinking buckets of feed. I only put the water in though and the weed/other slop went into the composter.
I thought that today we could have a look in the mother tent to see how they're doing. The short answer is super-duper....
WIN_20200423_19_43_28_Pro.jpg

They're back with us again and the only one I wouldn't feel happy taking a cutting from is the Critical Jack. It is a very squat plant which is pushing sides as quickly as it is growing taller. The rest are all doing well but I'm surprised that the Fat Purple seems to be the fastest growing at the moment and is giving the Tropicanna Banana a run for its money. The plants really like the coco and small pot combo....

clones are still looking healthy. I cant remove the dome for obvius reasons so I'm going to have to take them out at some point and let them live in the window. They look like they can handle the real world now....

The mothers are looking great Prof! Good find in the compost heap. I have been dumping all my Pro Mix in my compost pile in my back yard as well I bet there is all kinds of good stuff crawling around in there. We are actually planning to turn an old small pond that the previous owners had that has dried up now into a flower bed and will use a bunch of the compost in the back for the soil to fill it.

Nice to see some roots on the water only clones my only question is what is that lion doing in the background lol.

That'll be a nice flower bed. I've not used Pro Mix before but I imagine that it is probably better than the average soil which people would use for outdoors. What hardiness zone are you in? I remember you saying that the winters weren't too bad where you are. You could have some nice hardy fruit bushes.

The roots are coming just like the lions

Ya we figured it would be a good use of the space the pond is pretty small and is made of plastic it's only a couple of feet across but it's fairly deep. We have it covered over to keep the kids away it can be pretty nasty in the winter when it fills up with all the rain we get. We are hardiness zone 8 it stays fairly mild here in the winter we can get snow but that only happens once a year and is usually washed away a week after it falls. We do have an apple tree we planted a few years ago not sure what type it is they kinda look like Macintosh but are quite a bit more sour.

All caught up Prof. Very nice quality on the hash run mate. Bet that smokes lovely. Gardens are looking lush and healthy. That Hoe Down looks a frosty girl. Going to be some high quality bud being smoked this summer with the lock down. Lol. Hope you’re well bud.

Hey Lew. We're all good buddy. I've probably done more gardening than I've done in my whole life over the last month. It looks like I might be able to return to work in a couple weeks but that isn't definite yet.
The second round of hash turned out pretty nice. The HPD is great for making hash but I'd like to see it squeezed.
I have a question for you about the French Macaron. What did yours smell like? Mines like Vics Vapour Rub. Its really loud lol.
Hope you're well also bud

It's flowering day 33 for the coco plants today. All is good in the hood after the mould incident. I skipped a day with the watering's but I'm not sure it wasn't really necessary. It hasn't spread though so that's a relief. A few of the plants are developing some naughty fragrances. The Crumbled Lime's are both beginning to shine with a fruity and kind of doughy scent after a stem rub. The French Macaron is pretty interesting. It has a kind of menthol and eucalyptus smell which is really strong. The Double D's is still good though the Hoe Down is beginning to get some funk as well. They both have Tina genetics so I expect to see some similarities. Their structure is similar and their leaves even more so. Maybe they'll have similar flavours and scents. The Double D's is still my fav though.
We're still on 5.5g of MC per gallon and feeding everyday by filling the tray. Like I said before, I didn't bother with yesterdays feed but gave them one before lights out this evening.
Not much else to report on today other then I'm happy with their progress and am still looking out for which ones to re-veg at the end. Deciding which Crumbled Lime to keep is going to be a future first world problem I'm going to have to contend with at some point....
