Prof's Lab: Diary Of A Bedroom Farmer

Sounds like a brew and a half cooking away prof. Keep up the brave work.
I topped it up this afternoon with the kids paddling pool after they had finished with it lol. I know have twice as much at half strength...I think. I added 10 more egg shells and 4 more banana peels as well. Tomorrow we have a roast chicken fr dinner so I will add all of the bones from that as well. The upcoming harvest will see all of the cannabis waste go in there after I've made some hash with it. The cat brought a bird home the other day and guess where it went lol.

I pray nobody falls asleep in your garden or it's the pot for them too.lol . No point in asking about shergar or Lord Lucan is there?. Plants look nice and healthy from the feeds of it though. Well done mate.

I certainly know where the cat is going if it eats another one of my plants! All joking aside it is certainly worth looking into (not the barrel) as it is very cheap to do, better for the environment and hopefully will sustain my garden indefinitely. It is like eternal plant food lol. You just add more water as the barrel goes down and keep throwing stuff in it. Variety is apparently the key. Don't just add grass clippings though you certainly could. I do a lot of weeding and there are all kinds of plants which I couldn't even name go in there. Some I can name are things like ivy, blackberry vines, dandelions, wild strawberries and ferns. Those are some of the more pleasant sounding things which go in and even with those the smell gets pretty wild. I like to take it one step further and really spice things up. I'm not completely mad though and have thought about everything which goes in. Matchstick heads contain sulphur, egg shells contain calcium and banana peels contain potassium. It's that kind of logic. I have no idea about ratio's as I'm really not keeping count lol. One thing I know about it is that it sustains plants in vegetative growth. Plants which don't need a lot of nutrients are more than happy living in a soil which is being fed with this stuff. The question is will it allow more hungry plants which bare fruit to grow. The little auto and the tomatoes will give me an idea after they're finished growing. It is quite fun really but I'm still too much of a coward to bring it indoors and use it in a tent on a plant under familiar growing conditions.

Hello @ProfessorFlora ! Newbie grower and new to the forums too. Been learning a lot and keen to keep learning from experienced growers such as yourself. Love the relentless composting lol and your pragmatism for this grow in general. My current (first) grow is an accidental, outdoor bagseed grow, in questionable soil and with questionable homemade ferts.

For my first "real" grow I will also be facing the constraints of our tiny apartment, and will be using a cabinet, so looking to pick up everything I can! Am just waiting on the electronics to get started.

Thanks syenite and welcome to my journal. Just in time for a harvest as well. "Questionable" is what I'm all about lol. Last year I experimented with several brands of cheap potting soils and ended up with mixed results. Some were fine and I couldn't tell the difference between those and the more expensive cannabis friendly soils. Others though were either difficult to work with or caused ph problems and lockouts. These things are worth experimenting with though as they could save us growers a lot of money.

I'll be sure to stop by and check out what's going on in your journal shortly.

Cheers syenite and welcome to 420

Hey 420. Hope everyone is ready for the weekend. I have decided to pull the plug and get the harvest underway. The weather is hot and humid and I just have a gut feeling that something bad is going to happen. We have had humidity as high as 80% and the temps have been around 28C in the tent. I dimmed the lighting to around 50% a few days ago and it has helped massively but I still dont want to risk it. So either tomorrow or Sunday will be the final day for this round of plants and I think I can (so far) call it a success. The plants are looking good and most have ambers appearing on the flowers those some are still shooting out the odd fresh pistil here and there. The Phantom Cookies Domina will be a bit under done but I'm not complaining. Either they all come down or none come down as I don't have the space to be messing around. I will do one final update on those plants tomorrow before they are chopped. For now though here is a little sneak peak at some of the flowers....

I will make sure to get a load of better pics for you all as well.

Today we have a seed drop! Hooray! I'm hoping that these will lead on to a breeding project and we can create some seeds of our own. We just need one decent male and I don't care which. Knowing my luck they will all be male or worse...all female. I never thought I'd ever say that.

So here are the new seeds....

There you go @Heavenly Hybrid. I got some Afghani's of my own now. I have sterilised my coco and pre-charged it with a 2g dose of MC. I am a bit concerned about the damping off returning but this time they are in the safety of tent. I made sure that the coco wasn't saturated before planting the seeds as well. I will check them frequently to make sure that the surface isn't drying out too quickly. Here they are sitting in a much quieter veg tent....

I decided to clear out all of the lost causes and get things back under control. The Tropicanna Banana and the Critical Jack are all that I have in the tent now. The Fat Purple and the Hashplant D are both in the process of being cloned in jars out on the shelf. If they don't root then I have lost them for good. Well, not quite as I could always re-veg the plants which are currently in flower. If you remember the damping off also took most of my clones except the Critical Jacks which seem very easy to clone. Hey, if I can do it lol.
The TB in the jar is also gone as I saw it as a lost cause. It was stuck in a limbo and had root rot appearing but just wouldn't die. So, what did I do with it? Throw it out? Nope. It is still in the above pic. That's right that mother is the clone in the jar. The cutting I selected to be the original mother struggled with the transition to coco for some reason so I started again with a cutting which had root rot lol. I know, I know, it has worked though. I flooded it with H2O2 and it seems to be fine. I will put up some pics of that shortly.
Hope everyone is keeping well and staying safe still.

I trimmed her up and documented it over in the Barneys journal. I trimmed up the Critical Jack as well....

So there you have it. The Prof has sorted out his sh*t and got the house in order. I will be attempting a re-veg or 2 soon and will need the space for that so having the clean up was necessary really.

Thank you my friend!

Yes, sometimes I am driven by the notion that restriction and necessity (and outright but intentional stupidity?) can be fertile ground for innovation.

Like a good escape artist. Bondage sets you free?

Your plants are so beautiful - glad to be here to see them peak!

Thanks syenite. I'm 5 hours into the harvest right now and I'm just having a quick break. It looks like I'm going to be up for half of the night. 3 plants down and 4 still to go. There was a lot more bud in there than I thought.

Joint break over! back to it.

Hey 420. So the tent has been harvested on flowering day 69. What we had was a bottom fed, coco grow using 200w of power and almost no flushing. I did a flush before they went into flower and another around the first or second week but then nothing after that. Oh boy, have I got some pics for you guys. If you are not a fan of salt then I advise that you proceed with caution lol.

Most of the plants were to my liking with only the Phantom Cookies Domina being underdone really. It still has a lot of cloudy trichs and loads of bud sites. it took me around 2 hours to trim that one as it was late and my eyes were blurry. The whole process was a bit of a slog to be honest and it took me from 7pm to 3.30am to complete. I felt like I was drunk tired today and I really felt it. luckily I was aloud to stay in bed until 9 for my efforts.

First up here are some pics of the plants before the chop....

French Macaron.

Time to see what each plant looks like out of the tent. Some of them surprised me. First up we have the French Macaron.
This is one of the plants which surprised me. Short, compact and with flowers right the way to bottom of the stem. I thought that she probably wouldn't even give us an ounce but looking at her from here I think she could do quite well. She went a nice shade of purple by the end but only on the top part of the plant. She had a lot of growth down below which didn't get as much light so it never faded. The smell is pretty strong. It is very nice though tricky to describe. I guess you could say it is floral with spicy fuel notes. Very stick weed and also very dense flowers....

Now it is time for the first of the salty pics. Who would like to see the effect of not flushing coco medium for 8 weeks of bottom feeding? Nobody? Well I'm going to show you anyway! When I say this I couldn't believe it. There is so much build up and I can't understand how the plants didn't suffer almost at all. There was one tiny thing which on the PCD which i'll show you when we get to that one. This plant had some good build up on the surface of the coco but it pales in comparison to some of the plants coming up. Check this out....

Double D's.

This thing is the stink of the group. She ended up eing small but only because she was stunted and had the worst start. Her buds are large all the way down the stem and are so incredibly sticky. The smell is super heavy fuel and barbequed meat. Mrs F was like "WTF" when I made her sniff my finger. I have taken this one to re-veg and she is set up in my veg tent right now....

StarCake.

This plant was very impressive really. She is compact and very branchy with flowers from top to bottom. The flowers are very pretty and have a spear-like appearance. They smell great and have a fruity, nail polish remover scent. The other name for this strain is apparently "Jägermeister" and I can kinda see where they were going with that. The flwers were heavy and this plant actually toppled and was being propped up by the French Macaron....

Phantom Cookies Domina.

I didn't have to room or the time to care for this monster properly. What a beast. With a ccouple more weeks I bet she could have been something spectacular. Super branchy and with flowers absolutely everywhere this plant could have some serious yields. Sadly I couldn't get light into the centre of this tiny-ish monster and had to sit though 2 hours of trimming tiny wispy flowers. There were lot of good flowers as well but it was a real chore. The smell is earthy, berry fruit and is very nice. It was pretty sticky and made a mess with the literally hundreds of leaves she has hiding away. This one is so salty that it needs it's own salty post....

Phantom Cookies Domina Salty Pot.

The salt build up is getting silly now. I am officially declaring myself "king of the salt"!

This plant is the only plant which had any kind of bad leaves. After looking at those pics it would be easy to assume that the salt is the cause but I dont think so. You wait for the next bad pot lol. Plus it isn't really that bad. Just a handful of dead leaves on a very bushy plant....

Hoe Down.

The most beautiful in my opinion. Deep purple flowers with striking orange hairs and green and turquois hues. I can't wait to get some outside pics of the dried flowers. The plant was a dream to trim and took no time at all. She won't yield loads but I have taken her to re-veg as the quality is incredible. The plant was almost crispy and the sugars popped of with no effort at all despite being wet. The smell is very floral with musky and chemical tones. I tried a scissor hash joint after I finished everything and I was so high. Because I was also really tired I was having some pretty vivid auditory and visual hallucinations. Things like thinking the missus was stood next to me but when I looked it was just a coat or hearing the cat walk in but there was nothing there. There was also some wavy visuals to enjoy but I fell asleep not long after I smoked it. Probably within 20 minutes....
