Prof's Lab: Diary Of A Bedroom Farmer

Damn, sorry to hear you had to pull the rotten Toof  along with the rest. I'll get to the Barney's thread eventually...how long ago did you chop?
It was spectacular Shed. Like dominoes and not the pizza place. I'm still battling with various types of fungus now on my courgettes and sunflower.

The chop should be on the last couple pages of the thread as I haven't updated it since then. I thought about closing the thread but as it seems so popular and is for a 420 sponsor I have decided to keep it open for the next round of Barneys strains which is an auto grow. I can't remember if you saw the new seed or not

Incredible plants Professor, the photos are gorgeous. Bummer about the seedlings. Damping off is a horrible thing.
Thanks Tony. I'm quite proud of these and hope to re-veg a few to see if I can make mothers out of them. The Double D's is something else and I'd like to do a better job of her.

Damping off is certainly something I dont recommend lol. It's surprising how quick things can go from being ""just another day" to "where's all my plants?"

Hey 420. I had a nice surprise today when I was asked by the mother-in-law about the state of our seed reserves. I explained to her that we should be ok until the end of the summer and that there are 5 fems and 13 autos left. I also explained that I had intended to make some of our own seeds but had messed up that opportunity by losing the Caramelo's which could have contained a male. She really liked the sound of that idea and said that she could contribute something towards some new seeds. I don't have money for seeds but she gave us enough to make a little purchase in the hopes of finding a male.
So what did we get? I only got 3 regular seeds but they look interesting. 2 landrace indicas and an impressive sounding sativa hybrid.
I really like the Exotic Genetix plants from the current grow so I have gone with their Miami Heat this time which is from their Triple OG line. It is a 70% Sativa hybrid with apparently uplifting effects. The next 2 seeds are from a relatively new breeder called Afghan Selection. They apparently specialise in landrace Afghan indica varieties and have some interesting strains. They have some popular classics like Hindu Kush and Mazar-I-Sharif but I went with a couple that I'm not so familiar with. I went with Balkh and Kholm aka Tashkurghan. Both strains seem to have some variety in their finished appearance and flavours but are supposed to be a high quality indica experience.

So if we are lucky then we could still get to make some seeds. The odds are good that at least one will be a male though I dont know which id like to see go down that route. It feels strange hoping for a male lol

Hope everyone has enjoyed the weekend so far and is still staying safe.

That's nice of your mom in law to help you get some more seeds. Sounds like a fun breeding project coming up Prof, it
will be fun to see how it turns out!

indeed it was. When I mentioned the autos she was like "not them again" lol. Her ears pricked up when I mentioned free seeds and unique crosses though. All I need is a male or some colloidal silver and we can hopefully get free seeds. I'd prefer the more natural approach though and to be honest its cheaper and obviously more fun. After thinking about it id like one of the Afghans to be a male as opposed to the haze. As you know I like my meds to be relaxing but I still want something that is more energetic for the day time. I found some reviews of the Miami Heat and it looks like some lovely stuff. Growing some landraces sound cool as well. I like trying out new brands but there is always a feeling of risk involved. I couldn't find anything out about the Afghan Selection in regards to quality but they are pretty new. Hopefully they'll be good.

Hey 420. Recently I have been getting a little concerned about just how long these plants are taking to grow. It seemed incredibly slow compared to many other grows I have completed recently. I have been questioning everything that I have been doing, both conventional and non. I thought that the bottom feeding could be the cause but that doesnt seem right. One of the plants is actually finished but the rest are still in need of some amber trichs.

Today I solved the problem. The plants aren't being slow at all and in fact it is my brain which is being slow. At some point I have managed to add a week and it is only day 65 lol. Perhaps I need a break lol. Well I feel much better now as I was sure I was doing something wrong with these. .

The crumbled Lime #1 is done! she's sporting some ambers and has almost no white hairs left. Her flowers are super tight and she's just waiting now. I dont want to do a stepped harvest and will harvest them all next week instead of plucking them one at a time from the tent. I need the tent for drying as it is the only secure place away from the kids now that the grow room is in our bedroom. I can't dry individual plants in there with the lights running as it would bleach my buds and suck the life from them not to mention the risk of mould. Hopefully the weekend will still be good for the chop though I may hold off for a little while longer if I'm not satisfied.

Plenty of pics coming up....

Flowering day 11 and all's well! Today I need to retrain these ladies but I'm not quite sure how I will do it yet. There is nothing to tie to on the pots and I dont want to tie them to the tent poles yet as I will need to remove them from the tent a couple more times yet to do some trimming. Also I think that one or two may need to be raised to keep an even canopy later in flower. This grow feels good at the moment and it looks like I got the beginning right for a change. We aren't even at the end of the second week of flower yet though so I may be wrong. I think that it is better to have to trim plants to fit a space than stretch plants to fit lol. What I mean is that I'd rather have more growth than I need.
Here we are on day 11....

Dont sweat it mate. Done similar many times. Lol same as trying to trust the flowering time info against what we look down on live. This is why i used to discount the stretch weeks . Seemed a closer to harvest count.

Hey 420. It's another hot one today so I thought we could go back outside and see what is going on. I thought it would be nice to do a little update on the homemade fertilizer barrel. I haven't been adding much to it recently and need to go and do another good weed run. It needs a bit more water in there as well I think as it is getting very thick. It is much harder work giving it a stir now. I'm still adding banana peels ,egg shells and fruit and veg waste in small amounts but I think we need a bit more variety. The smell isn't any way near as bad as it was before and smell a bit like a farmyard covered in vinegar lol. The decaying stench has gone and even when you give it a good stir it doesnt make you recoil anymore.
I think we are doing it right and it is definitely full of life. The growth on the surface returns in only a few days after stirring it up. Here is how it looks today....

Apparently the white and greyish mould on the surface means that it is going swell and that the microbes are thriving.

Next I thought we could take a look at how it is benefiting some plants....

Here are some of my potted plants which are all being watered with the homemade ferts....
DSC01973.JPG

The sunflower is looking good though it is my first sunflower since I was a kid. I think that it is a dwarf variety as it is just beginning to produce a flower at about a meter tall. The plant is a very healthy green but has a fungus infection. It has been treated with a fungicide so it is just a case of waiting to see if it survives. Sunflowers are very susceptible to fungus found in soils which are more often than not fatal. It has survived this long on my Prof-Mix and fertalizer though....

The organic tomatoes are also looking pretty good. I have some chemical fed tomatoes to compare these with which is good. In my opinion mine look better but I'm no expert in tomato growing. The Prof-mix toms are lighter in colour but also more compact, have sturdier stems and seem to be growing better....
DSC01975.JPG
DSC01976.JPG

I burnt them when they were first transplanted into the pre-charged mix. I thought they were dead but grew out of it over the course of a month....
DSC01977.JPG

The normal tomatoes were a gift from my neighbour and look pretty good. They are taller and a darker shade of green and also have flowers but don't seem as healthy overall....
DSC01990.JPG

I have far to many tomatoes but hey. I can just plant them I a corner and forget about them....
DSC01979.JPG

Herbs seem to like the soil and fert combo as well. Sage, rosemary, chives, mint, oregano, marjoram, plus some spring and everlasting onions all doing well in the tray. I'm currently multiplying the herbs and then planting them back out in the garden....
DSC01978.JPG

The mint plants get their own pot as they spread like wildfire and will take over the garden. There are 4 types in this pot including apple mint, strawberry mint and 2 unknowns....
DSC01987.JPG

So there are some other plants enjoying my hard work. Who'd like to see how the cannabis is getting on?....

Here is the little Auto Purple Gorilla which is on day 48! That is pretty slow indeed lol. I think I could do better now if I had to start again. I'm sure that it was the weather which caused her to be slow at first. The temperature differences between the day and the night were unpredictable and there has been a few storms which would have upset her. She sat out in a good frost as well. The sun disappeared for a couple weeks which I'm sure didn't help. She has performed much better over the last couple of weeks and is pushing flowers at what feels like a more normal speed. She is getting darker now as she spent most of her life being a more pale green. The rough look she has acquired has been caused by the environment and animals and as nothing to do with the fertilizer or the soil. If it was then she would have continued to look terrible and wouldn't have improved. This little thing is growing on me and I just hope that it doesnt get taken by anything like the cat or mould lol. I tried not to fall in love with her but it is too late. Here we are today...
